Looking for information on the MARTS and LONG families of Sullivan County. Especially Stephen Chamberlain MARTS, son of Thomas and Jane Purcell Stark MARTS, and Stephen's daughters Sarah Jane MARTS Knoepp, and Martha MARTS Bridwell. Stephen's wife was Elizabeth F. LONG, dau. of Harrison and Sarah Hardin LONG.

I have quite a few Marts family members listed in my Family Tree. All the names you mentioned and many more.

Great! We are talking about the same family for sure. I did not have the second marriage for Samira but her first (Bennett Curtis) died young. Samira'a daughter was my Great-Grandmother, Myrtle Florence, who married Simon Peter Woodard

I have also seen Jane Purcell Stark Marts referred to as Nancy Jane and as Mary Jane, but I am not certain either is correct. From all the info I have found, her name was Jane Purcell Stark as you show and she was born October 24, 1810 the daughter of Hannah Purcell and Stephen Venard Stark, and she (Jane) died April 4, 1892. She and Thomas Reed Marts were married March 2, 1830. Thomas, the son of Jacob and Martha Reed Marts, was born April 4, 1807 and died January 22, 1881. Both Thomas and Jane are buried in Little Flock Cemetery, Sullivan County, IN. I have Samira born May 25, 1849 and died October 24, 1931 married first to Bennett Curtis and then William Stewart. Is that correct?

Thomas and Jane Purcell Stark MARTS
Do you have any dates on this family? I have been getting conflicting info on Thomas Reed MARTS and his wife that I had listed as Jane. One source says Nancy Jane Stark. I have no DOB on these two but they had a Daughter named Samira Jane MARTS born in 1849.

Melodye, did your great-grandmother, Myrtle Florence, ever speak about her mother, Samira, having a brother, Alva Stark Marts, who married Eunice Eleanor McKinney?

The parents of Eunice were, I believe, Thomas Robert McKinney and Jane (Elizabeth) McGrew. This is not a direct McKinney line for me but I have been keeping track of it just in case. I would be interested in knowing more about the family of Alva and Eunice. I currently show 10 children from 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census.

I don't have my papers handy but I remember the name. It's the same family. I mostly just keep track of my direct line but family groups come inhandy when there are a lot of same name people. In southern Indiana there really is a lot of them too.

Hi Dale,

I don't know how I missed this old query, but I did. I would love to compare notes with you on the McKinneys and Marts families.
