My great-grandmother, Mildred G Trumbull Miller, married Diedrick C. Anstett b.1903 d.1979. It was the second marriage for both of them and they had no children together, but he had a son from his first marriage, Dee Anstett. I'm not sure if Diedrick was born in Steuben county or not, but Mildred Trumbull lived in Steuben County all her life so they had to have met there. I can't say for certain if he is descended from your Anstetts or not though.

I was told there was no waiting period; the people I am looking for would have been out-of-staters; from Michigan.
Thank you again for your help!
Or does anyone know what Library or Genealogical Society I would contact?

Amanda Anway and Sarah Ann Anway both married in Steuben county. On Findagrave, I read that Amanda Anway (Charles) Havens was George Anway's daughter. He appears to be buried in Fremont cemetery. I'd like to know where the information concerning Amanda's parents names on Findagrave came from, whether from the stone, the cemtery books, or elswhere.

Sarah Ann Anway m. Levi Dygert 1844. I suspect she was Abraham's daughter, but would like real information.

Finally, there is also an Eliza Amway (presumably Anway) in Fremont cemetery. I would like to know whether she is dau of George (more likely) or Abraham Anway, both of whom lived in Steuben

The Anway name was made up about 1810, changed from Nanny, so all Anways are my relatives.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Okay, with your kind help, I have Amanda and Eliza as daughters of George and Anna Anway. The census suggests they may have two more daughters b, 1820-1830.

Abraham and Julia Anway appear to have one unidentified daughter b. 1825-1830.

All born in Delaware Co., Ohio, but probably in Steuben at some point. So I still don't know whose daughter Sarah Anway Dygert is. Could be either George or Abraham

Tell the cemetery book editor to correct Amway to Anway:-)
It's a family, not a pyramid scheme. (doulble smiley)

Lee Stanley Cassell was my paternal great-uncle (my Dad's mothers brother). To the best of my knowledge he was not married. He was killed on Nov. 4, 1918, in WWI in France. He was originally buried in France but was brought home and reburied in the Old Cemetery in Fremont, Indiana, next to his father. His sister (my grandmother) moved to Texas in the late 40's/early 50's and died in Texas around 1968 (San Marcos?) The American Legion Post in Fremont is named after him. He was an Army LT (Medical Corps). After medical school he moved to Sweet Grass, Montana, which is where he was living when he was drafted. I have his WWI field medical kit. I am wondering if the woman you spoke with was his sister, my grandmother??

Anne Bowman

Invited to speak in Angola in 1862, Sojourner Truth, the famous African American abolitionist, evangelist and women's rights advocate, was arrested for violating the original Article 13 of the Indiana Constitution of 1851 which barred black people from entering the state. This is her account of the episode, as it appeared in the "Narrative of Sojourner Truth." The complete text is available at: http://docsouth.unc.edu/neh/truth84/truth84.html

Page 139

The late lamented Josephine Griffing, whose loyal services in support of the Union, and untiring labors for the colored race, entitles her to a monument at the nation's cost, was often associated with Sojourner in anti-slavery times, and was invited to hold meetings with her in Angola and vicinity in the autumn of 1862. The slave-holding spirit was now fully

------------------------------------------------------------
Page 140

aroused in Indiana, and very bitter toward the negro. A law had recently been passed forbidding their entering the State or remaining in it. This law was unconstitutional, nevertheless the democrats had enforced it and endeavored to enforce it in Sojourner's case. A warrant was made out and she was arrested for both offenses. Mrs. Griffing undertook her defense alone, outwitted and beat the enemy. Sojourner, nothing daunted, determined to remain and carry out the programme. For a time her meetings were much disturbed. When she arose to speak, the democrats would cry, "Down with you! We think the niggers have done enough! We will not hear you speak! Stop your mouth! &c., &c." She told them that the Union people would soon make them stop their mouths. The Union home guard took her into custody to protect her from being thrown into jail by the rebels.

A meeting was appointed at the town-house in Angola, but the democrats threatened to burn the building if she attempted to speak in it. To this she made answer, "Then I will speak upon the ashes." Describing this meeting, she says:--

"The ladies thought I should be dressed in uniform as well as the captain of the home guard, whose prisoner I was and who was to go with me to the meeting. So they put upon me a red, white, and blue shawl, a sash and apron to match, a cap on my head with a star in front, and a star on each shoulder. When I was dressed I looked in the glass and was fairly frightened." Said I, "It seems I am going to battle." My friends advised me to take a sword or pistol. I replied, "I carry no weapon; the Lord will

------------------------------------------------------------
Page 141

reserve [preserve] me without weapons. I feel safe even in the midst of my enemies; for the truth is powerful and will prevail."

"When we were ready to go, they put me into a large, beautiful carriage with the captain and other gentlemen, all of whom were armed. The soldiers walked by our side and a long procession followed. As we neared the court-house, looking out of the window, I saw that the building was surrounded by a great crowd. I felt as I was going against the Philistines and I prayed the Lord to reliver [deliver] me out of their hands. But when the rebels saw such a mighty army coming, they fled, and by the time we arrived they were scattered over the fields, looking like a flock of frightened crows, and not one was left but a small boy, who sat upon the fence, crying, 'Nigger, nigger!'

"We now marched into the court-house, escorted by double files of soldiers with presented arms. The band struck up the 'Star Spangled Banner,' in which I joined and sang with all my might, while amid flashing bayonets and waving banners our party made its way to the platform upon which I went and advocated free speech with more zeal than ever before, and without interruption. At the close of the meeting, I was conducted to the house of the esquire for safety, as my friends feared the mob might return and make us trouble; but the day passed without farther annoyance.

"I spent some of the time at Pleasant Lake with Mr. Roby's family; but Mr. Roby was arrested for entertaining me, tried and acquitted. Another friend,

------------------------------------------------------------
Page 142

Mr. Fox, was taken up for encouraging me to remain in the State and summoned to appear at the district court, but was found 'not guilty.'

"One day whilst I was at Mr. Roby's, two ladies drove up in haste and earnestly desired me to leave, saying the rebels were near by--coming to take me--whereupon I went home with them. But they, becoming more alarmed, advised me to seek safety in some woods not far away, by offering to go with me. This I positively refused to do, and told them I would sooner go to jail. I stood my ground and the rebel constable came with a warrant to take me; but a Union officer, following closely behind him, stepped up and read some papers showing that I was his prisoner. At this turn of affairs the rebel officer looked very much disgusted, and turning to go, said, 'I ain't going to bother my head with niggers, I'll resign my office first.' Then the home guard marched up to our house, playing upon the fife and drum, and gave loud cheers for Sojourner, Free Speech, and the Union.

"The last time I was arrested, the constable asked if I would appear at court, or if he should take me along with him. My friends assured him that they would be responsible for my appearance. When the day for my trial came, a great many went with me, some of the best families in the county, among whom were Dr. Gale, Dr. Moss and family, Thomas Moss and family, Mr. Roby, Mrs. Griffing, and many other noble people whose names I cannot now recall, but the memory of whose friendship will be cherished whilst memory remains.

"My enemies, thinking I would probably run

------------------------------------------------------------
Page 143

away, had made no preparation for the trial; but when they saw us come, hunted around and procured a shabby room into which I went with a few friends and waited for some one to appear against me. After a while, two half-drunken lawyers, who looked like the scrapings of the Democratic party, made their appearance, eyed us for a few moments, then left. Presently we saw them enter a tavern across the way, and this ended the trial.

"We now went to the house of a friend and had a grand picnic. I returned home after a month of hard labor in Indiana, which I believe did much for the cause of human freedom."

Hi,
I am not a descendant of Charles Crain, but am very interested in more information on him and his family. I am descended from Ezekiel Crain & Rebecca Demaray of Steuben Co., Indiana.

Ezekiel was also from Vermont. I have often wondered if there is a tie between Charles and Ezekiel.

There were so many Crain/Crane families in Steuben Co, I am trying to sort all of them out.

Thanks for any help - I hope your email address is still current!

Thanks, Karen
Oberst, Cope, Teeters etc families

I tried to send a message to Brinkley206 and the address was no longer good. Any help would be appreciated.

My original message - - -

Noticed your post and am very interested in Oberst, Cope, Smith, Teeters etc families. Thomas Cope m. Lucina Throop and they moved to Clear Lake in 1836 (at least he did) with others in the Throop family. I have hit a brick wall on the Cope line and reaching for straws and at the same time looking for more on the Throop family.

Lucina Melvina (Throop) Cope died 19 Sept 1855 and is buried in the Teeters Cem. which I have visited. While visiting I found a story which I cannot now locate that upon her death, Thomas Cope gave land or church in her memory and the agreement was to pay one rose per year!!! I would like to find that article again and wonder if there is an obit for her in 1855. Thomas Cope remarried and later moved to Kansas and Nebraska where he died. Can give info on his family if you like.

While the Smith family is not in my direct line I! do have info going back to David Smith 1777-1867 when he died in Sandusky Co., Ohio.

By the way, you can find a fantastic Oberst site by searching for Thomas P Oberst genealogy. I provided much of the data for the Oberst family from Germany to Sandusky Co to Indiana to Nebraska where my grandmother was born in 1879 and remembered Thomas Cope as a child.

Looking forward to hearing from you - - Keith W. Chambers
COLLAR, GEORGE H. - death lookup / burial

My g.g.grandfather, George H. Collar, died on May 22, 1892, according to my g.g.grandmother's obituary. I'm assuming it was in Stuben, County, where their last two children were born in Jamestown. He is also listed in the History of Stuben County as being a constable in Jamestown from 1882-1884. I've tried unsuccesfully to find his burial place and his death record. Apparently, after his death the family moved into Michigan, where my g.g.grandmother, Mary Ellen Collar is buried in Colon, MI. Can anyone help me with a death record and/or a burial place? Thank you!

Is there a small library in Fremont?

I remember going up 5 - 6 steps to a small library in that area. I thought I copied the "One Rose" story during a researching trip a few years ago but either I didn't or it is someplace in my "Pile" filing system. I do not remember it after I got home. I spent time in the Angola Library and one other library in the area..

Anyone looking for Oberst ancestry can Google "Thomas P Oberst Genealogy." There is a fantastic amount of Oberst, Obrist, etc. material going back to 1400's in Switzerland. He has employed professional researchers made several researching trips to Europe. There are hundreds of pictures on his site.
