Hi Roger,
I am taking a chance you will answer this email. I am looking for information on Harold Sloan Criswell son of Reid Criswell. Reid is my grandfather. In 2006 I came across a picture that looked like my brother only it is old. I finally got it identified to be Reid and I am assuming a brother. Mom always said my brother looked like the Criswell's. Mom (Delia Ethel Marie Criswell) died in 1954 and I didn't even hear Reid's name that I remember until 1959. I have a picture that I am guessing is Elizabeth Bolejack but I can't find anyone that would know. I am asking for your help in locating the family you know about.
Thank you,
Sandy

I am not related but recently found a picture of a beautiful young woman named Ethel Spencer in an antique shop in Redmond, OR. I would love to return the picture to her family. I believe the picture was taken in the 20's and she looks to be a brunette with brown eyes.
There will be no charge to the family.

I can only go as far back as Ford. That is why I went to Charleston, I was not sure that his father's name was John, but I did not find any references in S. Carolina to a Ford Wilkinson. I do have some letters from S. Carolina to the Indiana Wilkinsons by uncles and cousins then living in S. Carolina (around Agusta, Ga.) Something like taking Uncle Fords girls to a hop. My e-mail is Robrtz1@juno.com it might be easier to get me there. They had some family move to Kansas I believe. I also got some information from a trip to Spencer County you might find interesting, you will have to give me some time to put it together and see what I have. I have not subscribed to Ancestry.com I will check with a friend to see if it is worth it.

I have Ford's father as John born 1829 and his mother as Susanah Jones. I have that he was one of at least 4 children. That is as far back as I go with the Wilkinsons on this line. My line is with Missouri and I do have more on her family. Missouri's mother was Ibby Ann Bloyd.

I have seen both spellings on Missouri and probably have some more information on that. I have her father, Ford Wilkinson, coming to Indiana from South Carolina, just north of Augusta, Georgia about 1805. He left some relatives in South Carolina. But I could not find any information before that.

Minerva Cosler/Cossler was born @ 1833 in Spencer Co, IN. She died @ 1867 in Spencer Co. There is no cemetery listing; however, I suspect she is buried in Richardson Cem. as are some of her siblings and her parents. She was the daughter of William Samuel Cossler and Catherine Riddle. William Samuel Cossler's heritage was Moravian. Catherine Riddle & W. S. Cossler had 4 children: Minerva; Franklin G.; Johnson Riddle; & Joanna T. Cossler, who married Nelson Young.
After his wife Catherine's death, William S. Cossler married Martha J. Childress, a first cousin to Catherine. They had 3 children: Louisa Jane Cossler Rouse/Yates; William Lewis Cossler & James Thomas Cossler.
Dee, your reply of 2 Sept 2009 was sent to me regarding Michael Tremper, son of Minerva Cosler/Cossler. I am not sure what the question is. I know you and I have corresponded in the past. I am a little rusty on the family as I have not looked at them for awhile. Mary E. Axton was one of Michael's wives. The only information I have on the Tremper family is what Priscilla sent me years ago. I will check to see that my email address is posted correctly. If not, I will update it.
Marilyn

Re: Niles family in Spencer County assoc.w/Porter & Anderson Families

Pat, I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that Moses B. Niles, Stephen Niles, F. V. Niles, and Felix Walker Porter (1815-d.bet 1853 but before 1857 Spencer Co.IN), Wm. A. V. Porter and Thomas Portler, and the Combs and Anderson families of Spencer County, Macksville area, were closely associated.

Wm. A. V. Portler md. Elizabeth Niles in Spencer Co. Dec 2, 1841 (Mg. Bk. 2, page 152). Felix Walker Porter of Spencer Co. md 1st Nancy McKim Jan 28, 1836, and 2nd Margett Dugan, March 28, 1844 (she later md. Howell Anderson). I have studied/researched all these people over the last 30 years, as I tried to discover the parents of my Felix Walker Porter.

Now, Moses Barber Niles was the administrator for the Estate of Thomas Porter, who died in June/July 1845 in Spencer County. At a Probate Court held July 19, 1845, the following Niles men bought various articles sold:

Stephen Niles bought one lot of cupboard ware, a 1-inch Auger, 2 chisels 1 Stew Kettle;

F V Niles bought 1 coffee Mill, 1 spade, 1 auger, 1 hatchet, 1 single tree and clevis, 1 bucket, 2 skillets and lids, 1 chest & lot of old Iron, 1 table;

Moses B. Niles purchased 1 door lock, 1 stripper, and 1 brass fassett? (tassell?).

When Alexander M. Porter's Estate was settled in Spencer Co.
at the Appraisement Bill, dated July 24, 1840 taken by my Felix Walker Porter, the administrator, included/listed the name of Moses B. Niles, who appeard to owe one account for 36 bushels of rent corn at $0.31 per bushel for $10.18.

I ordered the Appraisement Bills and Probate papers for Alexander M. Porter and also for Thomas Porter from the county court house. You might be able to do the same for your Moses B. Niles. I do know that he was the Sr. and he and had a son also named Moses.

The name Moses Niles apparently goes back several generations, as seen on Ancestry's One World Tree. A few folks seem to have the Moses Barber Niles families pretty mixed up on that website. Have you tried WorldConnect and FamilySearch.org? In one site, Ebenezer Chandler Niles, born about 1808 in NY. He is listed along with Moses Niles and Stephen Miles among the children of Moses Barber Niles who md 2nd: Betsey Whitmore Chandler.

In that same record, Moses Barber Niles, born about 1787 in Stephenstown, Rennssalaer, NY; d. 14 Mar 1849 Perry Co.IN had a 1st wife: Maria Porter md 12 Feb 1835, born about 1808, IN. (That may be why Mose B. Niles, who may have been the son-in-law, was appointed Administrator of the Estate of Thomas Porter). I think some researchers have Niles Sr. and Jr. mixed up in some places, and so that needs to be proven by legal documents, such as probate records and deeds.

Don't know how much this helped you, but maybe somebody else will be able to prove your question about Ebenezer.

Have you looked at The History of Warrick, Spencer & Perry Counties, Indiana by Goodspeed? It says there, pg. 368 in part: Maxville - the little village of Maxville was laid out on Apr 12, 1841. Dr. Niles opened the first store...J. M. Porter had a ferry...Frederick Miller owns a general store now (in 1885). In another place, p. 372: New Boston and Maxville (Macksville) are both close to one another and only a few miles from the Perry Co. line. Good luck in your search.

If you run across anything on my Felix Walker Porter (who also had a son Felix A. Porter, b. 1839, md. Rosalia Jackson), please let me know. Thanks.
I'm searching for a copy of a will, obit or anything that might prove that Moses Barber Niles was father of Ebenezer Chandler Niles. Info I have from DAR states that Moses died in Spencer County 14 Mar 1849. Both Moses and E.C. Niles were in the 1840 Perry County Census. Moses' wife was Betsey Whitmore Chandler. Ebenezer and family, with his daughter, (my gg-grandmother, Elizabeth E. Niles, who m. Henry V. Anderson) were in Spencer County in 1850. Any help you may be able to give will be greatly appreciated!

Stephen Risse has a very large pension file which you can order from the National Archives. He talks about his service in the Civil War and his actions after the war. I am related to this family through John Adelmanns and Katherine Risse's daughter Lorena. Do you have any pictures from these families? I have one picture of Katherine Risse Adelmann with two of her daughters that I can send you. I haven't had much luck tracking Jacob Adelman (I think he was hiding out during the civil war) or Stephen Risse.

Hi, my name is Charles Mc Daniel. I am descended from Nathan Hildebrant whose Father was John Hildebrant and Rachel Potter Hildebrant according to the following: NATHAN HILDEBRANT, farmer and stock-raiser, is a native of New Jersey, his birth occurring February 15, 1806. His father and mother, John and Rachel (Potter) Hildebrant, were also born in New Jersey, and were the parents of nine children. In 1818/9 the family removed to Highland County, Ohio, where the father died about the year 1823. Nathan came with his mother to this State in 1837, locating in Spencer County, near Richland, and there first purchased 80 acres of Government land to which he afterward added 40 acres of canal land. He also operated a pioneer saw-mill in Grass Township, but traded it for an interest in a flouring-mill at Rockport. In 1858 he began merchandising at the Lank Mills Cross Roads, but later, engaged in similar business at Rockport. He then teamed extensively for a time, but in September, 1865, removed to his present place, which consists of 180 acres of well-improved land, and where he has since resided, excepting from 1878 to 1882, when he kept the Dale House, in Dale. He was married March 8, 1827, to Katherine Karnes, and of the nine children born to them only two sons and three daughters are yet living. In 1846 the mother died, and for his second wife he wedded Eleanor Ervin. Two children have been born to them, one yet living. The parents belong to the Christian Church. Mr. Hildebrant is a Republican, and an honored upright citizen. For twenty years he has worked at shoe-making in conjunction with farming, and is also a cooper by trade.

"History of Warrick, Spencer and Perry Counties, Indiana - Carter Township" by Goodspeed Bros. & Co. - published in 1885
I believe that your John Hildebrant is the younger brother of Nathan because your John named a daughter Rachel and they were living near Nathan and Rachel in Spencer County. If you like you can contact me at my E-mail address and I will E-mail you what I have. Charles

I had a Harris cousin who did some research and when she died I was given her papers and notes. Unfortunately she did not give any sources. I also found it in the Ancestral File at familysearch.org. Would love to have some help getting a source - maybe we could work together on this and share information.

My 4th ggrandfather is Warren Harris, Sr. married to Cassy Ann Craven. My Warren was born in 1795 in Hardin Co., Kentucky and his wife Cassy was born in 1802 in Nelson Co.,Kentucky. Information that I have is that he died in 1885 at Santa Claus, Spencer Co. Indiana. Is this one your Warren Harris?
