JAMAS E. NAIEN, printer and publisher at Rushville, learned the printing trade when a boy, and has been connected with the newspaper business, printing and publishing at Rushville for forty-seven years. He was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, September 1, 1865, son of Simeon and Ornetta (Stout) Naden. His father was a native of England, born at Ashton-Underline, Lancashire. His grandfather, Henry Naden, was born in England in 1815 and in 1848 brought his family to America, crossing in a sailing vessel that was six weeks on the way. He was a weaver by trade, worked in Cincinnati, became foreman in a plant and saved the money with which he bought land in Jennings and Jefferson counties, Indiana. He was living there during the Civil war and Morgan’s raiders from Kentucky stole his horses and carried off much of his personal property. Henry Naden died in 1915, at his home farm south of Vernon, having reached the age of one hundred years. Simeon Naden served in the Twelfth Indiana Legion during the Civil war and his older brother, James, died while a prisoner of war at Andersonville, Georgia, after having participated in the battles of Lookout Mountain, Resaca and Dalton, Georgia, where he was captured. He was a member of the Second Indiana Cavalry at the time of his capture. He also served one year prior to that in the Twelfth Indiana Infantry. Simeon Naden was a farmer and a landowner in Jennings and Jefferson counties. His wife, Ornetta Stout, was born near Madison, Indiana, daughter of A. 0. and Maria (Brown) Stout, the former a native of New Jersey and the latter of Jefferson County, Indiana. A. 0. Stout was a son of James Stout, who came from New Jersey to Bloomington, Indiana, in 1818 and later settled in Jefferson County. Maria Brown was a sister of John Brown, who was a soldier in the war with Mexico and died of fever in that country. James E. Naden, the oldest of a family of eleven children, attended the common schools until he was fifteen years of age, then worked on a farm in Rush County three years and at the age of eighteen began learning the trade of printer in the Office of the Rushville Republican. He was with that paper three years, four years with the Graphic and in 1894 started a printing business of his own at Rushville. On November 22, 1894, he began the publication of the Rushville American, a weekly paper. For a year and two months during 1896 this was published as a daily, but since then has been continued as a weekly newspaper. Mr. Naden also has a completely equipped job office, and handles much of the commercial printing in Rush County. His business is located at 119 West First Street. Mr. Naden married in 1887 Miss Fannie Havens, who was born in Rush County, daughter of David and Anna (Amos) Havens. Mrs. Naden died July 22, 1900, leaving two children: Jessie, wife of Joseph Mercer, of Petosky, Michigan; and Miss Esther, in Chicago. In January, 1915, Mr. Naden married Eva Wells, who was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, daughter of Dempster and Etta (Shepherd) Wells. Her father was born in Missouri, son of John Wells, a native of Jefferson County, Indiana, and a grandson of Samuel Wells, who came from Pennsylvania and was a pioneer of Jefferson County, where he entered Government land. Mr. and Mrs. Naden are the parents of four children: Marian Elizabeth, born February 21, 1916, a member of the graduating class of Rushville High School of 1932; Laura Jean, born June 3, 1918, Wilma Ruth, born September 17, 1920, and Bettie Jane, born February 15, 1927. Mr. Naden is a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He is a Republican voter, is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias and is a member of the Rushville Chamber of Commerce.
