The Merkel line I am researching is from Rotenfels, Baden, Germany. Balthasar Merkel is my ancestor who came to the USA. One of his children, Casper Merkel, married Catherine Weisenbach in Ripley County, Indiana. There are remaining descendants of Balthasar's brother in Rotenfels, Germany today. If this is any help, let me know, I have more information on Balthasar's line.

I have a very possible connection... my great-grandmother was a Grace Riehl (listed sometimes as Grace Viola Riehl or Viola Grace Riehl). She and my great grandfather (Leslie Broome) lived in Patterson's Creek, WV, but I know that Leslie's father John Edward Broome owned property in or near Cumberland, MD.

I have no information on Grace's parents but she would have been born late 1800's. I may be able to find the dates if you're interested.

Do you have a J. Oliver Riehl that was a musician and at the US Naval Air Station, Pauillac, Gironde, France?

I found a stage program dated October 30, 1918, for a play at the Naval Air Station and he is listed as the Orchestra Leader. I'd be happy to send a copy of the program to you for your book.

You may write directly to ax2usn@aol.com

I am researching the RIEHLE surname and plan to publish the genealogy. The RIEHL surname (without the "e" suffix) originated in Northern Germany. The RIEHLE surname, with the "le" suffix, is from the southwestern part of Germany, such as Baden. In 23 years of research, I have not found that RIEHL and RIEHLE were related.

Sometimes after immigrating to America, persons dropped the final "e", but in Germany the names are of different origin.
Perhaps before 1650, they may have been connected, but this is not available for research.

Will be happy to answer any queries on RIEHLE

Rex, I have some information, but may not be anymore than you have. Sally Broome Hershberger, Patterson Creek, is still living. She is 101. Her son is married to my first cousin. I knew several of the Broome's, that is Sally's brothers and sisters. I also remember Lewis Broome and attended his sale in Fort Ashby. He was a brother of Lerslie. I had no wife for you Leslie Broome. Another brother was Harry, who married Salley Malone. I knew her, her children and grandchildren.

It is so nice to see/meet so many Riehle. I would very appreciate any info you have on our family. thank You Sharon Dillon (Riehle

Joan,

You mention that the RIEHL surname (without the ending 'e') originated in Northern Germany. What documentation do you have for that assertion? I would be very appreciative if you could give any leads that would narrow the search for RIEHLs in Germany in the 1700s and earlier.

I am descended from Ludwig RIEHL (my family added the 'e' in the late 1800s), who allegedly arrived in Philadelphia as an indentured servant in the mid 1700s. Some stories say he came from Hamburg, others from Cologne, and others say Switzerland. I have not had any success so far separating truth from fiction in this story. Any information that might help identify a location from which Ludwig may have originated in Germany would be very helpful.

Thanks.
