Classification: Query
Surnames: Huffman/Hoffman/Houghman
So far, my research suggests that George and Elizabeth are my 3G grandfather and grandmother - but not sure as I have been unable to confirm the line prior to 1850. Here is what I do know:
1) My grandfather was Everett Lincoln Huffman (b. 10 Aug 1900, Smithfield, IL; d. 7 Dec 1932, Peoria, IL)
2) My grt grandfather was Charles W. Huffman (b. 19 Feb 1869, Fulton Co., IL; d. 19 Mar 1947, Macomb, IL)
3) My grt great grandfather was James Huffman (b. 1839, Parke Co., IN; d. 10 Oct 1919, Smithfield, IL). James marries Catherine Paul, 8 May 1862, in Fulton Co., IL and is the son of George (born Ohio) and Elizabeth (born NC).
The 1850 census for George Hoffman, District 13, Wapello, Iowa, later census data for 1860 Lykens (now Miami), KS and 1870 and later data for Fulton Co., IL appear to be the correct family line. In 1850 Wapello, IA George is 50 yrs, Elizabeth 38 and their children are Hannah (15); Elias (13), James (10- my GG grandfather), Harriet (7), Miller (5), Rachel M. (2), and Alice will be born in 1851. Confusion sets in when I try to determine who James' father is. Here is the information I have been following:
1) George Huffman and Elizabeth Davis marry 15 Feb 1835 in Parke County, Indiana
2) George was born about 1800 in Ohio (Butler County?) and is believed to be the son of John Huffman (VA) and Mary Bland.
3) The 1830 Census for George Huffman in Parke, Indiana indicates he between 20-29yrs and there is 1 female 20-29 yrs and 2 males 5-10 yrs.
4) The 1830 Census for George Houghman in Hamilton Twp, Butler, Ohio indicates George is 20-29 yrs and there are 1 male 0-5 yrs; 1 male 5-9 yrs; 1 female 0-5 yrs; 1 female 15-19 yrs; and 1 female 20-29 yrs.
5) The 1840 Census for George Houghman in Parke, Indiana indicates 1 male 50-60 yrs; 2 males 0-5 yrs; 1 male 15-20 yrs; 1 female 0-5 yr; 1 female 5-10 yrs; 1 female 20-30 yrs and 1 female 80-90 yrs.
6) I do not have an 1840 census for George Huffman in Parke Indiana.
7) the 1820 census for John Houghman (George's father?) in St Clair, Butler, Ohio indicates 1 male over 45; 1 female 26-44; 1 male 0-10; 1 male 16-18; 2 males 16-25 (one of these George?); 2 female 0-10; 2 female 10-15.
Because the 1850 census for George in Iowa does not indicate that he had a wife and sons before 1835, I have not been able to figure the correct family line. I am thinking that George either married early in Ohio and had two boys but something happened to his wife and sons prior to 1835 thus making George's marriage to Elizabeth his second; he was a bachelor and living in Ohio until he married Elizabeth; or I am completely on the wrong track.
I would be most grateful for any pertinent information that will clarify who George is and whether or not he is my 3G grandfather.
