My name is Brian Bray. My grandfather was Berry, son of Ira. My father was John. Berry Bray was known as Pappy. Nobody on my side of the family has any recollection that Ira had that nickname.

My father told me that the homestead claim paperwork for that area burned with the county courthouse.

Berry Bray was a lighthouse keeper after fighting in Europe and my father John was born at Cape Blanco in 1929 and raised in lighthouses until high school.

The family has never appreciated the unsubstaniated negative references from teh nosey neighbor journal.

There is a story in a vanity journal in the Oregon collection at University of Oregon. If I get to it, I will scan and post.

This is first time I have seen the Branham name - courosity has always been the best of me as to how my Great Uncle got his name - he was son of Joseph Howe and Lucinda (Bartlett) McKee they resided Franklin twp Owen county in and around Freedom Joseph was a millwright and Justice of Peace. Albert could of been given he middle name "Branham" out of respect for neighbors - Just still wondering - here is data on Albert - Joseph & Lucinda came from Ky in 1839 to Owen county.

Albert Branham MC KEE-3461,2 was born 21 Jun 1841 in , Owen, Indiana. He died3,4,5 18 Sep 1918 in Decatur, Macon, Illinois from Interstitial Nephritis & Myocarditis and was buried 21 Sep 1918 in Boiling Springs Cemetery, Decatur, Macon, Illinois. Albert married (MRIN:232) Edith J. MAJORS-388, daughter of Joseph MAJORS-389 and Sarah Jane BEAL-387 (MRIN:257), on 21 Jun 1867 in Illini Twp., Macon, Illinois.

HiRay!

I think your post was intended for Deanna but some how got to me, Donna, instead. lol! I have been researching the Branham family for many years but unfortuantely haven't been able to devote any time to it in a few years. How ironic that I got your post!! lol! On a more serious note, I see that your John F Branham had a son named John. Would this happen to be the John D Branham that I have been searching for? I have John D Branham married to Mary Jane Vestal both buried in cloverdale Indiana. The John I am speaking is my 3rd or 4th gg father. I haven't opened my files in a very long time so I am not sure which generation he belongs in. lol! I also have a Homer B Branham any connections?

I believe we are researching the same line but I haven't worked on this line or any line for many years. lol! family history is a passion of mine but it seem like I never have the time to research anymore. I see that your John F Branham had a son named John as well. Would this happen to be John D Branham?

Hi Deanna: Sorry it has taken me awhile to get back to you. Yes John F. Branham served in the civil war. He enlisted twice. 1) 11th. Regiment, Indiana Infantry 2 19th. Regiment, Indiana Infantry. I have three or four boxes of information about my Branham ancestry, most of it on John Franklin. If you want more information or have some info. to share, please email me at rbranham@gte.net
Ray Branham
Seattle

Em & Benjamin Mast were married 6/13/79. There children were: Marion, Emerson, Otis, Grover, Glade, Nova and one daughter Ethel.

Ethel Mast (the only dau.) married Cletis Jean and they had 7 children. I found one of them last year. Mark Jean, who lives in Noblesville, Indiana. We have a Medaris reunion every year in Worthington, In. this year its 8/16/09 at Worthington Park at noon.
I am looking for any information on the Lexander and Defore families that resided in Owen County from about 1818 to 1880. More specifically information about Stephen Defore (177?-1844)and his sons George Washington Defore (1822-1879), John F. Defore, James Defore, and Samuel Alexander (1756-1831) and his sons Thomas (1795-1838), Abner, William, etc. Samuel's son, Abner Alexander is reported to have helped (Samuel?) Goss layout the plan for Gosport. George W Defore fought with the 30th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He also had numerous sons.

Some of the Defore's and Alexander also lived in adjacent counties (Clay County specifically).

Other good places for Owen County marriages are the website of the Owen County, Indiana Historical and Genealogical Society (for pre-1850 marriages) and www.sweetowen.net (for post-1850 marriages)

The Historical and Genealogical Society's website is at http://www.owen.in.us/owenhist/owen.htm

and their marriage records are at

A-J http://www.owen.in.us/owenhist/bks123a.htm
K-Z http://www.owen.in.us/owenhist/bks123j.htm

SweetOwen's Owen County marriage records (searchable by surname) are located at

http://www.sweetowen.net/1850marriages.html

If you go through Sweet Owen's main website, the first link does nottake you stright to the searchable index. You have to click on the second link down on the page that pops up with the first click (the one labelled 1850-1920 Owen County Marriages).

Hi. My name is Shannon Miller and I am a desendant of Conrad and Eva Sinders. I am the great granddaughter of Fred Sinders. My grandmother was Hazel Dennis who passed in 1997. Her sister, my great aunt, is Charlotte June Chaefy. Fred was married to Virgie and he died young. He was a desendent of Henry Sinders. I would love to have a CD. I have old pictures too, including one of the Sinders family taken in Ashboro, Indiana, (Clay County) I can send pics to you. I have a lot of pics that I cannot identify. My cell number is 812-239-6363. Thanks Shannon "Miller" Walden

I just found this post (4 years later- lets see if you are still out there!). Elizabeth Huldah Blair (daughter of James and Martha) and Roy Jordan were my great-grandparents. They were first cousins and had just one son, my grandfather, Ed born in Colorado in 1917. Roy had previously been married to an Alta Kress in Indiana, had two kids with her, then came west to Colorado where he was eventually the County Surveyor of Eagle County, and eventually left his wife and had my grandfather with Elizabeth Huldah. My father did not know my grandfather well, so it took a little bit of hunting around to discover the truth about my great-grandparents. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear from anyone descended either from Elizabeth, or for that matter from Roy's two siblings, Ray Jordan and Marie Jordan Saunders. Thanks- Ryan Jordan

Looking for Jacob A. & Martha Forsith (Forsythe) and Ellen Burk

A recent discovery in the 1850 census records have led me to Morgan Township, Owen County, Indiana in search of Jacob A. Forsythe (spelled Forsith in the census of 1850), his wife Martha, and daughter Sena A (or Cena A). It is possible that Martha's maiden name was Burk as there was an Ellen Burk (age 13) living in the Forsith household and she was much too old to be the child of Martha. Has anyone encountered a Jacob A. Forsith or Forsythe marrying into the Burk family? Here's some more info:

Jacob A. Forsythe (Forsith) born abt 1806-1808 in Virginia
Martha Forsythe (Forsith) born abt 1828-1830 in Indiana or Kentucky (prob Indiana)
Sena A. (or Cena A.) Forsythe (Forsith) born bat 1849 in Indiana
Richard A. Forsythe born abt 1851-1852 in Indiana

Later known children include:
George L. Forsythe born abt 1858 in Illinois
Mary T. Forsythe born abt 1862 in Illinois
Charlotte G. Forsythe born abt 1865 in Illinois
Emma S. Forsythe born abt 1868 in Illinois

In 1850, Ellen Burk, b. abt 1837 was living with Jacob, Martha and Sena/Cena in the 84th district of Morgan Township, Owen County, Indiana. By 1860, the family had moved west to Township 6 Range 6 E, Effingham county, Illinois. By 1870, the family had again moved, this time southwest to Washington Township, Lafayette County, Missouri.

I'm hoping to find any references to Jacob A. and Martha Forsythe/Forsith, marriage records, perhaps mention in a will. Jacob was significantly older than his wife so this may have been a second marriage for them but perhaps not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Cynthia DeLay

Sthair

Hi, I am trying to gather information about the Sthair family, some of whom lived in Owen County. The biggest problem I'm encountering is that the family name seems to have been spelled in all kinds of different ways in the earlier years. Later, the family seems to have all used Sthair as the spelling, but I couldn't be sure that some family members didn't change to something more common at some point. At any rate, the census has all kinds of variations for people I have identified as belonging to this family. Any help in piecing together their background would be useful.
