Don, thanks for your reply. I was in Bloomington about a year ago and found the
Shields cemetery in the subdivision. It wasn't in very good shape and most of the stones weren't legible. The couple that were didn't seem to fit my family profile. The other
Shields cemetery was one of eight smaller cemeteries that were moved around 1965 to make way for the reservoir, Lake
Monroe. These eight Salt
Creek cemeteries were all removed to a site that is now maintained by
Polk Township. It's the Allen
Creek cemetery. I looked through it last year for Charles D.'s tombstone but to no avail, though there are several
Shields' buried there.
As far as my family knows, Charles D. Shields was the son of Martha H. Denny of
Mercer (later
Boyle Countyy,
KY. She is shown marrying a "John
Shields" in
Mercer,
KY in Dec 1830. Charles always said he was "adopted." What I think he *might* have meant is that he was issue to a prior marriage of Martha's, possibly in 1825 to a John
McHatton in
Harrison County,
KY (though the McHattons are hardly convinced of this--maybe some DNA research would settle it). As Charles was born about 1826, he was probably brought into the
Shields family by adoption once Martha remarried. But this is only a guess. I plan to stop in at some courthouses next time I'm up in
KY and see if there's any info on the marriage records that might yield a clue. The primary study of the
Denny family, by two researchers named
Vann and
Dixon, indicated that Martha married a "John F. Shields" with whom she had other children (Frank and
Belle). On the 1840 Census I found Martha with children near a "
Rowland"
Shields in Perryville,
Mercer,
KY (
Boyle County was later formed in 1842 from portions of
Mercer and
Lincoln, so Perryville--where the family lived--changed county names in 1842). It may be that he was "John
Rowland Shields" and would be the adoptive father (or possibly biological father) of Charles D. Shields.
I was interested to see one of the messages above referencing Caroline
Shields as Charles' sister. I don't think that's correct; Caroline might have been an aunt instead. Would like to ask Debbie how she came to that conclusion, if possible. BTW sounds like we may have Charles D. in common. I have at least one photo I believe is him and some of his children. Let me know if you're interested in it. Many thanks. S.
