I am trying to obtain information on Gardner Richley "Dick" Smith and his descendants. He was born 4 Nov 1921 in Ohio. In 1940 he was living in Peru, IN with his aunt Bertha Tereba. He married twice and had a daughter with each wife. One daughter, Vicki (mother and surname unknown) was living in Peru, IN probably in the 1970s or early 1980s. The other daughter, Susan Reed was living in Niles, MI in the 1970s or early 1980s and had 2 daughters and a son. Gardner was living in Los Angeles in 1950 before moving elsewhere.

John McNamara & wife Mary 'Frannie' Fitzmaurice - 1910 Miami Co IN census

Seeking information on John McNamara (b. Jan 1870 KY) and wife, Bridget A. McNamara (b. Jun 1872 OH), shown on 1900 US Federal Census, Covington, Kenton Co KY, with children:
1. Stella E. McNamara age 9
2. John P. McNamara, age 6
3. Margaret McNamara, age 4
4. Lelian A. McNamara, age 1

This 1900 census shows that John and Bridget married in 1891, but I have been unable to find their marriage record online. I do not know her maiden name.

Bridget apparently died between 1910 and 1909.

I believe I located this John McNamara in 1910 living in Peru, Miami Co IN. He had remarried to Mary 'Fannie' Fitzmaurice on 25 Nov 1909 in Miami Co IN. The 1910 census shows this was his second marriage and Mary's first. John's occupation is listed as Asst Sup/Insurance.

I believe I located this John McNamara and wife Mary in 1920 living in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co PA. John's occupation is salesman/wholesale tea.

I have been unable to locate him on a 1930 census.

My research question is:
What happened to the four children he had with first wife Bridget? They are not in household with him and second wife Mary in 1910. I am especially interested in his son, John P. McNamara b. Nov 1894 -- who MAY be my grandfather!!

My grandfather, John McNamara, said he was orphaned when a young boy -- and when I was born in 1938, asked my mother to name me 'Bridget'. He was raised by 'Aunt Laura and Uncle Will' in Preble Co OH. I noticed that Bridget was born in OH and maybe the couple who raised my grandfather was related to her. I do not have their surname!!

I do not have an exact date of birth for my grandfather - he said he was born in KY. Various documents collected over his life show birth years ranging from 1876 to 1889. This may not be his family at all, but I am asking for any information on John & Bridget's children, particularly the son John.

Thank you.
Barbara Jean McNamara
Obituary of Major Milo D. Ellis (1834-1887) former county auditor

This obituary appeared in the Peru Republican on April 15, 1887 on page 4 column 3. The paper was published in Peru, Indiana. It was transcribed from a copy of the microfilm of the paper in the Indiana State Library’s newspaper collection.

Death of Major Milo D. Ellis.
Dr. F. H. Watkins received a dispatch Tuesday morning, announcing the death of Dr. Milo D. Ellis at his home in Dayton, Ohio. M. D. Ellis was at one time one of the best known men in Miami county [sic]. He went into the army in 1862 as First Lieutenant in Co. C. 87th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He commanded the company two years and served as staff officer the remainder of his term of service until the close of the war when he was mustered out with the rank of Major. He participated in the battles at Springfield, Perryville, Chapel Hill, Hoover’s Gap, Chicamauga, where the regiment lost more than half its officers and men engaged in the battle. Afterwards at Rocky Face, Ressacca, Cassville, Dallas, Kenesaw, Peach Tree Creek, and before Atlanta and finally with Sherman in his great march to the sea. In October 1865 he was elected Auditor of Miami County and filled the office acceptably for five years. While in office he married Miss Kate O’Conner, of Dayton, Ohio, who was at that time a teacher in the Peru public schools. He subsequently engaged in the practice of medicine in this city for several years, then moved to Parsons, Kansas and for the last six years has been a resident of Dayton, Ohio, where he died. Major Ellis was buried by the Masons this (Thursday) afternoon at Mt. Hope cemetery [sic].
Thank you so much for your nice reply! I was so surprised to be notified of it as it has been a very long time since I posted that obituary. I am descended from Daniel's older brother, Charles Hartley Powell, who was my grandfather. We have much in common as both our fathers served with the Indiana State Police. I remember when your father was killed in the line of duty. I was a junior in high school in 1959, but you would have been quite young as I recall. What a horrible senseless tragedy it was.

I had no idea of the existence of Enoch's pocketbook, but how wonderful that you have inherited it! I believe Daniel also inherited the family Bible which was used to help with the birth and death dates of the family who are buried in unmarked graves in Mount Zion Cemetery in Fulton County, Indiana. Only John Hartley Powell has a marker and that was one provided (I believe) by the government for his Civil War service.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance with your research.

Hello,

My name is Jeffrey Alan Powell and I am the son of John Henry Powell and my grandfather was Daniel Powell. Daniel was a son of John Hartley Powell. I actually have the wallet from Enoch. It was given to me as a graduation present from my Grandfather Daniel Powell. It is ingraved with the notation, "Enoch B Powell's first pocketbook" and it came with a confederate $20 bill that Grandpa told me his father came by during the civil war.

Thank you for the posting of the obituary. It was great information to read.

Hi Bill,
According to court papers, my great-great grandmother was represented by Farrar & Carpenter, which I believe was your great-great grandfather's law firm, in her divorce case in Peru, IN in 1879. I wonder if you have access to or know if any records from this firm have been preserved. This divorce was something no one in my family knew about, and it would answer a lot of questions to find the original complaint, which does not exist in court records. Thanks for any information you can provide.
Julie

No, I'm sorry to say I didn't even know her eldest sister Mary, who was my great grandmother. Mary died in 1903, just 35-36 years old (I still haven't found exact dates for her birth or death).

I do thank you for the information about your Aunt Blanche. Now that I know her middle name was Blanche and that's what she went by, I've changed the page I have for her to reflect that.

Take a look at the page and let me know if you can add anything, or have changes or corrections (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Oden-56). I really have very little on her; no exact date of birth, no death date/place, no burial. Also have no marriage or children.

I could give you access to edit the page yourself, but I'd have to invite you to join WikiTree first and I'd need your email to do that. WikiTree is completely free if you're interested.

By the way, Master Ultan is a minor character from a favorite book, and I am Fred John Remus III.

I have 7 children for Marean and Martha: Mary F. Oden, John W. Oden, Viola C. Oden, Effie L. Oden, Marean M. Oden, Walter E. Oden and Orpha B. Oden. That's in birth order. Viola died as a baby. I don't know if there were others, but I have this note on Marean D's page:

Besides daughter Viola, the FindAGrave site #S9 shows another child at the same cemetery who died at age 2; William Oden (1870-1872). It is not clear that he was their child. Also two other Odens, John W & Charles M, who died in the 1870's. There are no birth dates for the latter two, so it's difficult to guess how, if at all, they are related to Marean and Martha.

I have your Great Aunt Blanche as Orpha B. I'm guessing the B stands for Blanche. Do you know for sure that Blanche was her middle name?

I have the same problem with pictures from my grandmother. Fortunately, she wrote who they were on the backs of a lot of them, but some are mysteries.

If you don't already have all of that, you can find it with links to all my sources here: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Oden-55

That is his profile page, but there's a link to her page from there. I'd like to add pictures for them if you have them in digital format, or can get someone to scan them if not.

One of the records I mentioned shows one sibling, the other shows nine. If you know the names of any great-aunts and uncles on that side of the family you can probably tell if either of those records is the correct one.

Also, in the Notes section on her page, I have a couple of links for possible parents for her. I'm not able to confirm either set of parents yet though. Do you know anything that could confirm or rule out either of those sets of parents?

I have his name as Elias B. Oden. 1850 Census: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MXQY-NBX It shows Marean, 8 years old, as "Marino." Census data is riddled with errors like that. I also have no parents for Elias. First one to find them, yell! :-)

I have pictures of dad and my grandparents. I also have pictures of dad's brothers and sisters. I can remember visiting my grandparents in Kokomo and seeing a large painting of Marean Oden in full uniform but since my grandparents are gone no one knows where the painting is. Some of the pictures I have put most of them on ancestry.com. I followed the Oden line up to Elis Oden there it ends because I can't find his parents.
