HELP Stella Wilson married William Martin Nov, 1900 in Marion County, Indiana (marriage book 257). Can some body help me obtain a copy of this certificate? We think her mother was Ann Plumer born 1858. According to the 1880 census Ann was the daughter of William b 1825 Indiana and a Rebeca I. b 1824 Indiana. Would there be any birth records for Ann or Stella. We do not now where in Indiana they might have been born. Any help/suggestions finding who Mr wilson was (re: 1880 census) would also be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at mlkaltenecker@hotmail.com. Thank you very much.

Marylyn

If it is George P Hunter and not George T Hunter (are you sure about the middle initial or could it have been an error in transcription?) there is an entry in the Crown Hill Cemetery Burial locator for a "George P. Hunter" buried 25 Oct 1918, Section 57 Lot 249.

Rather brief obituaries, but maybe they help somehow!

Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, November 4, 1964:

Mrs. Rose M.
Jones family

I am trying to find some trace of my grandmother's cousin, whose name was Robert George Jones. His parents were John B. Jones and Ella (or Luella) Likins (or Likens), who were married in Marion co. 19 Nov. 1903. Ella died in Marion co. 26 Sep 1911, but her will was filed in Hancock co., and a Greenfield Democrat note refers to her as "formerly of Vernon twp." She is buried in Gravel Lawn Cem. in Fortville. In the will she mentions both her husband John B. Jones and her son Bobbie. The only census record of Robert George Jones I have been able to find is for 1910, at which time they were living in Richland co. ND, and Robert was listed as 5 years old, so b. ca. 1904-05, in Indiana--presumably in Marion or Hancock co., or possibly one of the adjoining counties. My grandmother said that this Robert George Jones later lived in Florida, where he was a gem cutter or jeweler, but I don't know if he died there, or if he had a wife and children. I've struck out consistently with locating him after his mother's death, or, for that matter, locating his father. (Obviously the name "Jones" doesn't help!) I haven't found him in the WPA birth indexes for these counties, though I may have missed him. Can anybody offer any information, help or guidance?

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Sophia Mitchell; a son, Jack Mitchell of Cincinnati, O.; a daughter, Mrs. Leonard Marschke of Indianapolis; two brothers, Oscar Mitchell of Galesburg, Ill., and George Mitchell of Indianapolis; two sisters, Martha Mitchell and Mrs. Rose McCord, both of Indianapolis, and founr grandchildren.

Monday August 30, 1965:
Miss Martha E. Mitchell, 1815 E. Commerce, sister of George R. Mitchell and Oscar T. Mitchell passed away Sunday. Funeral Wednesday morning 11 o'clock at Flanner & Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary. Friends may call after noon Tuesday.

Sunday, December 28, 1980:
Graveside services for George Mitchell, 97, Indianapolis, a lifelong resident of the city, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in IOOF Cemetery at Oaklandon. He died Dec. 21 in a local nursing home.

Wednesday, June 8, 1910:
Mitchell, William T. - Died at his home, 712 East Pratt street, Tuesday at 12 o'clock noon. Funeral at residence at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Friends invited. Burial private at Crown Hill.

I also located a Rose McCord in the Crown Hill burial locator (buried 11-05-1964). This would seem to mesh with the obits... she's mentioned in Henry's in early 1964 but not in Martha's in 1965. She is located in the same cemetery lot as Pearson F. McCord (her husband? son? buried 07-03-1961).

Additionally, I found Betty and Leonard Marschke in the SSDI, but they appear to have left the Indianapolis area:

BETTY L MARSCHKE
birth: 03 Jun 1917
death: 27 Sep 1996 (V)
last residence: 32920 (Cape Canaveral, Brevard, FL)	last benefit: 32920 (Cape Canaveral, Brevard, FL)
SS #: 304-07-2730
issued: Indiana

LEONARD MARSCHKE
birth: 03 Jun 1913
death: Nov 1983
last residence: 32920 (Cape Canaveral, Brevard, FL)	last benefit: 32920 (Cape Canaveral, Brevard, FL)
SS #: 466-34-4477
issued: Texas

We have a large festival in Spades Park every year and I'd like to include a panel about him for our history exhibit.

Thanks, Joan Hostetler

Dear Tim,
Thank you so very much--this is great info. I haven't been able to trace any descendants yet--but will keep trying--
If not imposing--when you have time could you look up Henry Clay Mitchell's Obit--he is the husband of Sophia--they have two children, Jack M. and Betty L.--
I don't think that Martha had children, but not sure and I think that George died in Dec. 1980--in Indianapolis.

Again thank you so very much for all your great help.
Have a great day.
Bart

Bart. Cannot help with the obit, but I think this is your Charlotte. William T Mitchell married Charlotte Wadsworth in Daviess county on 22 Jul 1877, source is book 4, page 338. In the 1880 census the family was in Martin county, Dist 157, page 26, and included T Wm, Charlotte, and 5 children, Chloe, Francis, Oscar, Clay, and Lealdis (I think this should be Leander after one of her brothers), and Charlotte's sister Sarah Wadsworth. Because of the age of the children, only the last 3 could have been Charlotte's. The Wadsworth family was in the 1870 census in Daviess county, Van Buren township, oage 11. Hope this helps.
From the Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, November 7, 1945:

MITCHELL - Mrs. Charlotte Mary of 1237 Windsor, mother of Martha, George and Clay Mitchell of Indianapolis, Mrs. Rose McCord of New York, Lee Mitchell of Pierce City, Mo.; Oscar Mitchell of Chicago, Frank Mitchell of South Bend, sister of Oscar Wadsworth of Indianapolis and Albert of Ogdon, Ill., and Miss Jane Wadsworth and Mrs. Anna Herndon of Raglesville, Ind.; and Mrs. Sarah Goodman of Bicknell, Ind., passed away Monday a.m. Services Flanner & Buchanan Mortuary Wednesday, 2 p.m. Friends invited. Burial Crown Hill. Friends may call at mortuary.

It appears she may have actually died on the 5th, as this obituary from the 7th states. I also tried looking for an obituary for Sophia Mitchell but was unable to find one. However, using the Crown Hill burial locator (http://www.crownhill.org/locate/), I was able to find a whole bunch of Mitchells buried in the same section of the cemetery. Charlotte is buried in the same lot as William T. (buried 6-9-1910) and Martha E. (her daughter? buried 9-1-1965). I did find a Sophia who was buried on 5-23-1972, near Henry C. (buried 3-10-1964). Hope this helps somewhat.

according to the 1900 census for Marion co. IN Amos L compton is still alive and is living one house away from his father Jonathan.

it says he was born in July of 1879 in Indiana and he is married to a Henrietta b. sept 1879 IL.
Still living there in 1910 with two kids Sarah and Jerome and in 1920 he is living there with a third son name Leroy
I dont have an index to search with in 1930 but I hand searched Decatur Twp Marion co. which is where he was in 1920 and he is not there in 1930.
Could not find Jonathan or Phebe in the 1910 census anywhere
as he would have been about 77 so I am going to assume he had died by then. According to the Find a grave he died in 1902 and buried in the Bridgeport Ceme. in Bridgeport, Ind whihc is still marion co. and Phoebe died in 1908 and is buried there also.

Sue

I dont know if this is going to help but I have been trying to check out Jonathan and Phebe if Phebe is Amos mother.
since he gave the last name of Oglesby and not her first name.
according to the census in 1900 Jonathan says he and Phebe have been married for 40 yr.s which would put the date around 1860 and since William was born around 1862 in Ohio they still had to be there at that time, however they might not have married until after the census was taken in 1860
So i was checking around,
in Madison co. OH in 1860 there is a Phebe Oglesbee age 25 b ohio living with a John Simmons family as a domestic.
And since Henriettes mother was a Simmons, it might be worth checking out. there are quite a few John/Jonathan Comptons sitll single in Oh the right age that without something else to go on it might prove a little hard. However, If you can find someone to look at marriage records statewide for Ohio fo them it might help.

sue

I would like a scan of him in the yearbook... Any ideas? What library might have them?
I would also like to see if anyone has the yearbook from about 1946, when Harry Wiles graduated, my uncle.
Thanks for help or ideas,
Cindy in Tennessee

This is curious, my great grandfather was John Abraham and I did notice on a census list(1850) another John C. (my Dad's name is John Charles b. 1911), I think maybe a nephew?
He's listed as a miller where the rest were all blacksmiths of Adam Jr a Tinner. John C is 28 and my John A. age 25 and was out goldfields in CA, was a 49er, listed as mining for Occupation. Let me know if you find out who John C. belongs to.

Hi Joan. Well of course we will get a scan done and provide as many details as we can. Michael Spades died four years before my mother-in-law was born in 1920. She and her younger sister did get to spend time with his wife Hester Cox Spades I think at their winter home in St. Augustine Florida, which is where the picture that we have was taken. It was still a private residence about 10 years ago when we looked at it. We will of course talk to them and gather what we can. If there are other photos, we will scan them too. Is there a more direct way to contact you? Best, Bart Morrison

I have two family photos for the Danforth/Welch families. One is of a young woman, with the ID Lena Mae Danforth Welch; the other is a four-generation photo of Lena, her unnamed mother and daugher, and granddaughter Julia H. Welch.
Lena was married to Charles D. Welch, and the couple moved to Indianapolis, sometime between 1910 and 1920. By 1930, they are nowhere to be found, but several of their children, including a Claude Welch, are living with Viola and W.O. Moore in hamilton county, Ind., and are listed as their nieces and nephews. I would like to get them to someone who is a relative. If anyone is connected with this family, let me know and we'll make arrangements to get them to you.
