Hi...
A little late, but I just came across your post. I don't know Lyle's second wife's name or their daughter's name. We lived next door to them on Brook Street in Mitchell in the 1950's before we moved out of state. We moved in 1959 and their little girl wasn't very old, probably 5 or 6. Not much info but hope that helps.

Linda

The Lawrence Co. IN 1840 Census is listed on Ancestry.com...it is mixed in with the Lagrange Co Census for some reason. I informed them of this error years ago but it has not been fixed. You can see on some of the pages, all the way to the left, it says Lawrence Co.

The birth, death and marriage records that you find on-line for other counties in Indiana were transcribed as a part of the post WW-I WPA work project and not all counties were included.

Here in Lawrence County they built stone walls and bridges instead of doing vital record transcriptions.
Not of much use to genealogists....but left some historical stuctures.

Thank you for your reply.

I have ordered a death cert. from the health department.

My g-g-grandfather John A. Rowe was a stone carver/cutter there in Bedford and is buried in Green Cemetery. He came to the U.S. as an infant in the 1850's, the son of a stone carver from Exeter, England.

Interesting, that Lawerence County deaths (like his in 1907) weren't in the Indiana death records and listed like the other counties in the state.

No. If you are looking at Ancestry.com, it appears that they don't have Lawrence County working for some reason. Try this link, there is a index you can click on to find HH Names

http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/in/lawrence/184...

I have a death certificate for Richard William Thomas Gainey born 12/28/1841 in Springfield, IN (newspaper article corrects to Springville, IN) that lists Wesley Gainey as father and mother as Sarah (no last name listed). I have family genealogy stories (but no hard evidence) that indicate that 1) Sarah Giles was the mother and that she and Wesley Gainey never married, 2)they were first cousins, 3)Sarah Giles was born c 1826 and Wesley was born c 1823, 4)Sarah moved to Rock Island, IL when RWT was about 1 year old and married William Pettifer in 1844. I have notarized affidavits from RWT Gainey that William Pettifer was his stepfather. I have DAR records that indicate Wesley Gainey was born c 1828 in Lawrence Co, IN and later married Sarah Barker. My family is going through our records to see if we have any more hard evidentc. Have you discovered any more info since your original post?

Hi,

The first DNA results are in for a descendant of Christian SCHICK/SHICK/SHEEK of PA and Rowan (now Davie) County through his son Christian, Jr. who remained in PA. This is kit #156447 at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/sheeksdna/default.aspx?s...

He tested at 37 markers, and the results on the final 25 markers are still pending.

Christian Sr.'s son son George moved to Lawrence Co., Indiana where he died in 1843.
http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/sheek.html

We are still looking for descendants of George's that would test to guarantee that this is the DNA of Christian Sr. To DNA test, you need to be a direct line male descendant from him, with no intervening female generations.

This project is just getting started, and the results show one line in PA that we do NOT match. As additional lines are tested, it is hoped that they will lead to new relatives, and to a match with a line whose origin in Germany is known.

Rick Saunders

My Quillens moved to Arkansas from Indiana after a short stop in Kansas in the late 1880s. John Lafayette Quillen (1838. Greene Co IN) was appointed postmaster of Paxson (later Garner) in White Co AR. Son William Tell also was postmaster in Garner. Other son James Henry (1859) is my g-g-grandfather. James changed name to McQuillen before 1920 when he shows up in Oklahoma with 4th wife (that i know of).

Hi All, If anyone is still monitoring this message, Can you tell me the names of Albert and Hulda's children? The above message states that Hulda died in Peru, IN in 1952. I have a photo that may be her and Albert. The back of the photo says, Albert, Hulda, & Gladys. There are two youngsters also in the picture; they are my mother-in-law, Rita Pitman and her brother Jim. Rita's great grandmother was Lucy Carter and I believe she may have been a cousin to Albert. Rita's dad was from Lawrence County and lived near Peru, IN. Can anyone help me identify this couple and if they are the above named Carters? The photo would have been taken about 1946. Thank You!
