I posted the following message on the "
Volstorf" surname message board, but I thought it might be appropriate to re-post to the
LaPorte Co. message board as well. I accidently forgot to post this as a reply so it will appear on the
LaPorte Co. message board twice. My apologies.
Where in Germany did your
Volstorf families originate? My husband's gr-grandmother was Mathilda VOLSTORFF (married name
HOPP) of
Elgin,
Kane Co., IL (their Americanized surname was with two F's...the original name in Germany was actually VOLSDORF) so I've done extensive research on this VOLSTORFF family...including hiring a professional researcher in Germany to get church records for me. Mathilda was the daughter of one of the original immigrating family members. My earliest information begins with the marriage Gustav Theodor
Martens VOLSDORF and Grete
Sophie Friederike
SCHROEDER on 28 March 1840 in Leistenow, Pommern, Germany. They had nine children:
Maria Volsdorf b. 12 July 1840 in Leistenow
Friedrich August Christian Volsdorf b. 4 Oct. 1842 in Wilhelminenthal
Carl
Friedrich Theodor Volsdorf b. 27 Jan. 1845 in Heydenhof
Carl
Friedrich Christoph Volsdorf b. 6 Jun. 1847 in Heydenhof
Johann Albert
Friedrich Volsdorf b. 1 Dec. 1849 in Heydenhof
Christine Marie Caroline Volsdorf b. 23 Mar. 1853 in Heydenhof
August Volsdorf b. 23 Mar. 1855 in Schmarsow
Friederike Marie Johanne Volsdorf b. 26 July 1860 in Borgwall
Wilhelmine Caroline Friederike Volsdorf b. 7 July 1863 in Borgwall
A lot of my information came from the church books in parish Kartlow, and I've collected a ton of paper on the families of each of these nine children. Friedrich (Frederick) above is Mathilda's father, who I mentioned is my husband's gr-grandmother. They all came to Elgin...per Germans to
America, volume 17:
S.S. Eugenie, port of
Hamburg, depart 1865, arrive Jan. 1866
Volksdorf, F., 51 (
Farmer); Friederike, 48 (F); Maria, 20 (F); Christian, 19 (M); Carl, 18 (M);
Friedrich, 9 (M); Caroline, 7 (F); August 6, (M);
Wilhelm [possibly Minnie], infant (F); Johan, 23 (
Farmer).
