The Petits lived a few doors down from us on Graham St. In Franklin. My siblings and I would go down and rake the leaves or shovel the snow for Mrs. Petit because our Dad told us to. He would mow her lawn from time to time as well. I didn't think to question why we did it, Dad said to do it,that was good enough. Mrs. Petit was a nice lady. We were never to take money even if she offered. I finally asked "why" when I was a teenager and the only kid left at home. "Because, she lost one of her sons during WWII. I am asking you to take the place of some of the grandchildren she should have had."
To clarify, the family is a very nice one. Mrs. Petit's other adult children/grandchildren loved her and did plenty for her,far more than we attempted. It was just a life changing moment for me as a teen.
