Looking for descendants of Isaac Shepherd BROWN, son of Aaron BROWN and Margaret "Peggy" SMITH. Isaac was born 18 Jan 1829 in Wythe Co., Virginia and died 17 Oct 1887 in Johnson Co. He married first Cynthia Ellen SORTER and had 2 sons John B. and David. Isaac married second Mary Margaret CARNINE. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter: Robert A., Charles A., Edward S., Isaac N., Andrew C. and Mary L. BROWN. This family lived in Pleasant Twp. and most are buried at Hopewell Cemetery.

John B. BROWN (1851-1887) married at least one of his second cousins whose surname was GOOD and may have married 2 sisters. John lived in Johnson, Clinton and Marion counties and died 1 Apr 1887. I would like to know if he left a widow or surviving children.

I have little proven information on David BROWN, b. 1855. He may have lived in Illinois and Kansas and then returned to Indiana.

Robert Allen BROWN (1858-1922) was a newpaper editor and chief clerk of the Indiana Supreme Court.

Charles A. BROWN (1860-1949) married Sarah Etta LOWE and had 2 children.

Isaac Newton BROWN (1867-1933) married Edith LAGRANGE and had twin sons who died as infants and a daughter.

Mary Lilly Brown (1872-1929) married George FREEMAN and had 2 sons, 1 who died as an infant.

Edward SMITH BROWN died at age 21 and Andrew Cameron BROWN died as an infant.

Lori, in the 1850 census for Johnson Co. Pleasant Twp. living next door to Isaac S. Brown and wife Cynthia, is the William Smith family. Living with them is Nancy E. Brown age 18 b. VA. Do you know anything about this Nancy? I am looking for the family of a Nancy E. Brown of the same age, born in Va married a James B. Webb probably in IN, as their 1st son, Isaac W. Webb was born in IN (1856) they later moved to Iowa and then settled in Mo. Thanks, Donna

I don't know anything about this Nancy BROWN after 1850. I have not followed the probate/guardianship records through to where Nancy turned 18. William Smith was the uncle of Nancy and her brother Isaac Shepherd BROWN. They had a brother, John Robert BROWN who died about 1845 at about aged 10. They had another brother and sister who died as infants. They lived in the Southwest corner of Pleasant Township.

This Nancy was born 6 Apr 1832 to Aaron BROWN (son of Isaac BROWN and Mary "Polly" Unknown) and Margaret "Peggy" Smith (daughter of Joseph Smith and Elizabeth BLACK). Nancy's parents were married 28 Apr 1826 in Wythe Co., Virginia. She was orphaned with her mother dying abt. 1839 and her father dying abt 1841. The Smith family were Methodist and BROWNs appear to be Presbyterian, at least from Isaac Shepherd BROWN on. Johnson Co. Family Records give this Nancy's husband as Samuel GERABIL and their marriage date as 19 Jul 1852. I have not found the surname GERABIL anywhere else. I have not found a marriage record. I never consider Johnson Co. Family Records as infallible. I have seen the marriage date listed for your Nancy to James Webb and wondered if they were the same Nancy.

My Nancy had a cousin who married James Clark Webb. Who were the parents of James B. Webb? What township did they live in? Which counties in Iowa and Missouri did they live in? What was their church affiliation? Nancy had another cousin (my line) who moved to Mercer Co., Missouri.

I don't know if any of this is helpful to confirm or disprove connections but would be interested in knowing more.

Lori, the indiana marriage record on-line has James Webb marrying Nancy Brow(e)n, but I haven't found any other Browens in the area.I know the marriage index is not infallible, when I sent for a marriage record they had as Mitchell Paul, it was definitly Mitchell Vaul (as I had hoped). I don't know who are the parents of James B. Webb, I don't know if the one in Johnson county is ours. I do know the cesuses all agree he was born in ky, in 1860 it said he was 31, in 1870 36, 1880 51. Nancy is always listed as born in VA, in 1860 she was said to be 29, in 1870 35, in 1880 50. They had a daughter in the 1860 census of Sullivan County MO, Mary E. age 7 b. IN a son, Isaac W. age 4 b. IN, and a son John A. age 1 b. MO.in 1870 Mary E. is no longer listed, and added are William F. 8, b. IA, Martha E. 7, b. IA, Nancy M. (Margaret) 4, b.IA this is our line, said to be born in Appanoose Co., no records yet found, these areas were still pretty "new" and records are scarce, and James A. 5/12 b. MO So while the spent a good portion of the 1860's in IA they were always in Sullivan Co. MO for the censuses.I don't know yet of any religious affilliation there weren't many churches, I haven't checked their records yet, we don't live near there. I have been searching for these families for over 4 years, and this seems to be the best match I've had so far. I found a James Webb in the 1850 Johnson Co. census of abt the right age, but he was already married. I need to check and see if by chance his wife died by 1852. There are a number of Webb families in the county, I have my work cut out for me. Thank you for your reply, Donna

Donna,

You are right about the Webbs in Johnson Co. being confusing. The James Webb who in 1850 had a wife Mary J. and Rebecca and Robert Smith in his home died in 1855. His mother-in-law Rebecca contested his will.

William Smith, Nancy's guardian, moved to Greene Co., Indiana in abt 1853. I don't know if she went to Greene Co. with them. I would not rule out a James Webb with ties to Greene Co.

Let me know if there is anything specific you need looked up in Johnson Co. since I will be visiting there some time this summer.

Lori

I would appreciate knowing what year William Smith was living next door to the Brown family. I am looking for a William Smith born abt. 1850 in Va. He is listed at WWSmith in the 1870 census.

The Nancy BROWN who married James WEBB in Johnson Co. received consent from her guardian William Smith. In the 1850 census there is a candidate for your James WEBB in Marion county. He is in Perry Twp. if I remember correctly. Perry Twp. is one of the southern townships of Marion Co
