Can you give me any information about the ancestors of Arthur Roseberry? I have found some of his grandchildren on Facebook and I am trying to determine if they are related to me. My grandmother was a Roseberry who descended from Thomas Roseberry Sr. of Jefferson Co., IN. These folks that I have found don't seem to have much information regarding their family history. I assume they descend from Forrest since they carry the Roseberry name.

Thanks so much, this is just what I needed to know; if Lucinda was living in this household. I believe she was the daughter of Benfield Griffith and this gives credit to that. Her husband Eli Johnson must have died and as a widow with daughter Elizabeth, she returned to her father's house. Lucinda later married Jesse B. Cole, and they are my great grandparents.

Do you know if there is a death notice for Eli? or could point me in the direction to look? Jesse B. & Lucinda married March 27, 1852 according to a Jennings County marriage index.

I really appreciate the extras you found. ER

In 1850 he was in Campbell township. The family was headed by Benfield Griffith, 55, farmer, born in Ky and Aquilla, 57, Ky, and the following all born in Ind, Lucinda, 25, - Elizabeth, 22, - Malinda A, 20, - Susan, 8, and Elizabeth Johnson, 2. Unfortunately no family relationships are shown, but I think Elizabeth Johnson is his granddaughter as Lucinda Griffith married Eli M Johnson in Jennings county on 17 Oct 1844. The next family is headed by Tatman Griffith, 27, farmer born in Ind, and included Susan, 25, and Aquilla, 4, both born in Va. I think Tatman might be Benfield's son and that Aquilla was actually born in Ind as Tatman married Susannah Haynes in Jennings on 21 Oct 1845.

Hi.....Unfortunately I know very little. I have newspaper articles regarding both of their deaths. If you don't have them e-mail me directly and I'll scan them for you. They both died within days of each other, she 25 Mar 1877 and he 31 Mar 1877 which makes you think of cholera or some such illness. His son, John H., sold at public auction all of his fathers personal belongings.

As far as I know John and Susan didn't have any children, she was 56 and he 62 when they married.

I have had no end of difficulty locating information about her first husband Jacob Phillips so was in hopes there would be some connection between the Bradford and Phillips families....

Loanne in CA

Harvey Bradford is my great-great grandfather and he is the son of John and Sarah Blades Bradford. Harvey was born in Bartholomew County but later moved to Jennings Co. Old John Bradford married Susan Brown Phillips after Sarah died. John and Sarah Blades Bradford are supposed to be buried at the New Harmony/ Harmony or Section Cemetery in Sandcreek twp of Bartholomew County IN. Do you know where Susan Brown Phillips Bradford was buried? Who were the children of Jacob and Susan Brown Phillips? Since these two families intertwined we may learn something by working together on them.

ER. Difficult to say as all marriage licenses would have been issued in the County Seat of Versailles. The record would probably not show where the actual marriage took place. In my experience with records from other counties of that time, the only info on the record would be the names of the bride and groom, the clerk who issued the license, the person who performed the ceremony, date issued and date returned for recording. Good luck. Don

If you've not done so, you need to look at the 1850 federal census of Indiana, Monroe County, District 74, page 2. You will find: Mary Aston, 56, b. NC; Westwood Aston, 27, b. NC; Mundann Aston, 25, b. Indiana; Vanburen Aston 17, b. Indiana. Two dwellings away are: Yancy Aston, 24, b. Indiana; Hannah Aston, 32, b. Indiana; William Aston, 2, b. Indiana; Jacob Aston, 6/12, b. Indiana.

This could be your family and would at least give you a first name for his mother and that she was born in North Carolina. A search in the North Carolina marriage records would be helpful in finding the name of Mary's husband.

I do realize you may have already done the things I've suggested.

HELP! I've hit a brick wall--my husband's gr grandmother, Francis MOSLEY b. 6 Feb 1867 in IN married ? MILLER also b. in IN @ 1880, so the family story goes. They relocated to Havre, Chouteau Co, MT by 1886 when their first child was born. Elmer MILLER was b. Jun 1886, then Nellie MILLER b Mar 1889 and Lillian (my husband's grandmother) b. 20 Nov 1892 d. 21 Mar 1984 in OR. All the children were born in Havre, Chouteau Co, MT. Mr MILLER supposedly died while Lillian just a baby; and Francis remarried to Isaac Newton ABBOTT in Havre, MT & had 3 children with him. Any help with the MILLER/MOSLEY line would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Gayle

Sheila,
Thank you so much! I had noticed on FamilySearch.com the number of Millers & Mosleys in Jennings Co. When I found them I wasn't sure which direction I was going, but will be going back & taking another look. Still not too sure where I'm going, but have a better "sense of direction" now. Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated. My husband vaguely remembered being near the Kentucky River on one vacation to see family, while my mother-in-law only ever said there were a lot of dikes. Does this describe Jennings or Scott County? Again, THANK YOU!
Gayle

Thank you for all your information. I've never been to IN myself, so it's been hard to picture what my in-law was talking about. It had been @ 45 yrs since she'd been there herself, so my hubby thinks her memory was a little off. And he was @ 5 or 6 when he was there, and turning 54 now! I will check out the INGenweb site & continue my search. My "gut feeling" (you know that tingling we all seem to get when on the right track?) is telling me Scott or Jennings, but I could be wrong. You have helped tremendously, though, so thank you!
Gayle

Looking for information on store owned by Daniel Oscar Botkin in old Paris, Indiana. He was born 1899.
Someone showed me a dinner plate with "D.O. Botkin, General Merchandise, Paris, IND." on back. Also I was given a copy of a photo of the store front, which had a Coca-Cola sign above the door.

Thanks!

How truly wonderful for you to share this with me; I can't tell how much I appreciate it!
Daniel Botkin was my great-grandfather and Ralph was my granpa, and I only know that they had a store there.
I now live in Commiskey due to marriage, and when the wedd announcement was posted in the paper, someone shared the plate/ picture with me (through my mother-in-law).
The big cement house that you speak of is currently for sale, which sparked my interest in learning more about Paris.
Thank you so much for the genweb Jennings Co sites; I have spent the last couple days reading all through them! If I can help in anyway, please let me know.
Erin elbotkin@hotmail.com

Here is a little something my mother wrote for the Jennings Couunty INGenWeb site about her time in Paris-the Botkins were a prominent family there. I will ask her some more about the store.

During the Depression my parents lost everything and my father could not find a job, so we went to live with Grandma Stewart in Paris. I remember sitting on the steps crying because we were eating beans again, but I also remember the good times. Every Saturday night a little local band would play on the steps of Dan Botkins store, the band consisted of Herman Windburn-fiddler, Louie Davis-guitar, Cecil Boardman-jug, Marion Terrell-mandolin and Ralph Botkin-guitar. Grandma Stewart owned the house that had once been the Methodist Church Parsonage, it was a little house but very comfortable and it is still standing in Paris. Grandpa Stewart had died in 1925 so it was just Grandma, my father-Francis Marion Stewart and mother Della (Theobald) Stewart my little brother Charles Herbert Stewart and myself. We had a good time as kids playing in the woods and going to the swimming hole on Davie's Creek, we also liked to go to Shilliday Cave and explore. Some of the people who lived in Paris then were, George Wykoff, Virginia Windburn, Mrs. Riggs (Riggie), "Elzie" Davis, Earl & Emma Higgins and Emma Higgins father Mr. Vincent, Ollie & Tom Rowland lived in the big Cement House, Stan & Marie McGannon, "Little Meg" Wykoff, Mary Catherine Spicer, Uncle Lee Ayers, Junior Morgan, Lula Terrell, John Darin and the Botkins lived in the big brick house that Rev. Dennis Willey had built years before. My best friend was Francie Davis her mom was a Ray, Francie still lives in Commiskey but I moved to California the 1950's. Francie and I ran off together and got married in Kentucky she married her first husband Ernie Gray and I married Charles Smith from Madison. Later Francie married Harold "Hap" Maupin from Commiskey, we are still good friends."
I received this e mail and would love to know if anyone can identify this cemetery. I have deleted the personal information of the sender but can contact him if anyone can help us with this. I am hoping to go down and check it out this summer.

Sheila Kell - Jennings County INGenWeb Coordinator

"When I was much younger, about 25 years ago, I used to clean and maintain a cemetery that is back in the woods near my father’s farm. One time I cleaned and raked it and was able to count about 90 graves but only about 30 or so had visible markers. Many are probably fallen over into the sunken graves, many have been vandalized. I went back to visit it yesterday and found it has been vandalized again and trees have fallen in it and many of the markers that used to stand have fallen or have been knocked over. I can not find this cemetery on any maps or lists of cemeteries in Jennings County. It is located in Bigger Township just over the Campbell Township line. It overlooks Otter Creek from the North looking South, just West of Indiana Gardens. I ran across the name of Rev. Wm. T. Stott who pastored in Vernon starting in 1825. His grave is there as well as his family. Some of the names there are Moncreif, Stott, Phares, one Civil War grave of a soldier named Gideon O. Trickey who was a musician with the 6th Indiana Infantry. I think the most recent grave I found was 1926. I would really like to know the name of this cemetery."
Here are some more of my mother's memories of the store. It had quite a few steps up to a cement porch, there was a large ice chest on the porch where they stored the ice they sold. When you went in the store to the left was a dry goods section (they sold farmers overalls & such). You then went in to the main part of the store. The town pump was to the west of the store in front of the house. Later on Dan added Hay to what he sold from the store. There were benches on the front porch and the local men would sit there in the evenings and swap stories. As children they played around the store mainly the game long tailed fox (a game like hide and seek)and were not supposed to play in the nearby tobacco barn but we did and would get chased out of it. Mother said she remembers Mrs. Botkin was named Pearl, and said she didn't know many womens names because the children always referred to them as Mrs. not by their given names.

Gayle;

No dikes in Jennings or Scott County that I know of, also the Kentucky River I know of comes into the Ohio River out of Kentucky, at Carrollton Kentucky, there are large locks on the Ohio River just upriver from there at Markland Dam. This area is nearer Switzerland County further south than Jennings & Scott Counties. Here is a link to the Jennings County INGenWeb site I maintain. There are a number of mentions of the Mosely name on it http://ingenweb.org/injennings/ You should also check out the entire INGenWeb with links to all counties at
http://www.ingenweb.org/

In the 1880 census there is a Frances Mosley age 16 living with her brother George Mosley in Cana Township, Jennings County. George Mosley had married a Mary Elizabeth Keith in 1872. There are a number of Mosley's in Marion Township, (which is just over the County line from Scott County), in this time frame. Also quite a few Miller's, the census indicates in 1880 both George and Frances were born in Indiana. I am digging in some of my hard copy files at the moment will see if I can turn up anything.

Sheila Kell
County Coordinator Jennings County INGenWeb

Hi there Myra, another Aussie cuz here. I have been in touch with Paul and Malinda, although not for a couple of years. I have everything they had up till that time. Anything new? I am the daughter of John David Whaling, son of John George Whaling, son of Anne Jane Wiegold, daughter of Maria Toms, daughter of Thomas Tombs/Toms/Thoms and Ann Susanna Gill. I have recently paid a subscription to Ancestry.com.au and am still trying to find the father of John George Whaling/Whalan/Whelan etc. who was the partner of Anne Jane Wiegold. I'd like to hear from you. Jill

I have not found any indication that he died or lived in Jennings county, other than a biographical secondary account, but it is worth looking in Hendricks since his brothers were there. I will keep looking for where he died. Thanks!

I am looking for info on an Ebenezer Curtis born about 1824 in Indiana. He is on the 1850 census for Pulaski Co. Il. There is also a Daniel Curtis living there who might be his brother. By 1860 Ebenezer Curtis moved to Mississippi Co. Mo. an then in 1870 to Scott Co. Mo. His wife was Diantha or Dora born in Illinois. Their children are: Mary Elizabeth, George Washington, William Franklin, Francis M. and Alonzo Curtis.
