I'm trying to find some history on a small stone (square stones) 1 story house that once stood on east side of Hwy. 7 at north edge of N. Madison over 25 years ago. It was very ancient looking & I think I remember reading somewhere where they thought it was maybe built in late 1700's or early 1800's, but cannot remember where I read that info. now. The public library in Madison doesn't seem to have any info. on it in their files.
I would basically like to know about when it was built & by who & if there are any pictures of it anywhere that I could obtain.
Thanks
Don

Ursula NEAL & children John S, Reuben E, and Chloe CT>PA>IN

I am looking for help on identifying the following family:

Ursula (birth surname unknown) NEAL, born about 1781 in CT, was living in the Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA area from about 1820 to the time of the 1850 census. She, along with son John S NEAL born about 1820, son Reuben E NEAL born about 1823, and daughter Chloe NEAL JOHNSON born about 1809, moved to Madison, Jefferson Co, IN in the early 1850s.

Ursula continued to live in her daughter's household until her death some time in the 1870s. Chloe (Mrs William JOHNSON) was last found on the 1880 census. Among Chloe's children are Ursula TURNER, Sidney, Lucretia SWORMSTEDT, William, Elizabeth, Harriet, and Reuben.

John S NEAL was a steamboat captain. His first wife (a DUVALL ?) died prior to the 1860 census. He is found in the 1880 and 1900 census in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN married to Lucretia JOHNSON PALMER. He is in a cemetery listing for Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, dying in October of 1908.

Reuben E NEAL may have married Ellen S WINGER in Jefferson Co, IN. By the late 1800s, they are found in Randolph Co, WV.

I believe that Ursula NEAL may have had at least one other daughter named Lucretia, who married Lot O REYNOLDS while the family was still in Allegheny Co, PA. A number of the family names are repeated in Lucretia Ann NEAL REYNOLDS' descendants. I do know that Lucretia's mother's name was Ursula - I just do not know for certain if it is the same Ursula NEAL who went to Jefferson Co, IN. Lucretia Ann NEAL REYNOLDS died in the late 1830s.

Would like to hear from anyone working with Ursula, John S, or Reuben E NEAL or Chloe NEAL JOHNSON who may have more information (obituaries, newspaper references, wills) which would help verify a family connection to the NEAL / REYNOLDS line in Pittsburgh.

Did we correspond about the Feuerstines in the past?

In any event, since Christian Hall was the son of Henry Hall and Rebecca Hankins that makes use relatives (most of eastern Jefferson is related somehow) as I'm descended from two of Rebecca's siblings and have done a lot of work on the Hankins.

Have you seen Joseph Lochard's biographical sketch in the Biographical and History Souvenir of (a lot of counties) and Jefferson. Long title

My grandfather knew Solomon. He said he tried to keep a store at Hicks but I take it, he didn't have a lot of success.

A lot of people in Canaan would know me, or more likely my parents. Lee Rogers' father and my grandmother were first cousins and I grew up with Lee's kids. Chuck Rogers was my high school debate partner. Eddie Taylor was my eighth grade science teacher.

I'm not related. I wrote a history of the Indian-Kentuck region early in this decade and owners of area stores, such as Lochard's stores at Manville and Canaan figured in.

My mom worked in the Canaan store when it was old by Fred and Nell Perry in the late 1940s. She lives on the road between Manville and China where she and my father lived when I was born. I have lots of relatives in the area. I was last at the festival in 2007, I think.

The Madison-Jefferson County Public Library has a new section on its Web site (www.mjcpl.org) called "Historical Rescue Project"

Given the fire at the county courthouse, this is the best source of information on Jefferson County marriages from 1851 through 1965. The 1905 through 1965 records has the marriages on line, but also has downloadable files that show information from marriage applications, which usually listed parents of the couple. It is the most complete record of marriages available post-1850 and the first I am aware of that has the post 1900 marriages.

Also online are the Gans and Vail undertaker records, Fairmount Cemetery Internment records (from the cemetery records, not the tombstone transcriptions) and City of Madison death records from 1838 (which look to me like transcriptions of the Springdale Sexton's records)
There is a Will section, but it appears to be only part of the wills in the 1800s, but includes more wills and probates in the second half of that century that are not included in the DAR transcriptions

More are there and more will be going up.

Millie Banks was the widow of Carter Banks. She was Amelia Martin, daughter of Benjamin Martin. She lived 6 May 1803-4 June 1881. She was born Stokes County, and died in Matfield Green, Kansas. Her tombstone is shown on find-a-Grave and for some reason her name is shown as Amelia Banks, not Lochard. Carter died in 1844 and Millie married John Lochard on 12 Jan. 1845 in Jefferson County, They were shown in Milton Twp., Jefferson County, in the 1850 census. The Jane, Thomas, Josephus and Simeon in their household that year were actually Banks, Carter's children

I can state with confidence that Aaron Ames is the only person of that name with a marked grave at Manville Cemetery. Of course, there's lots of unmarked ones.

The only records Manville has is a list of members going back to probably the beginning. Many names don't have dates, although they were entered chronologically so the ones that don't can at least be said to fit betweens the ones that do. There are only a few years of minutes in the early 1900s.

Aaron was member No. 3 on the list, meaning if was probably an original member, although it's not clear that the list was actually started in 1830 or 1831 when the church formed.
There is an F.M. Ames, member No. 17, A Francis Ames Jr. joined on 24 Nov. 1850 and was member No. 101. John Ames joined the same day as No. 113; Sarah as No. 133 joined sometime between that date and March 1860, the next clear date on the list.

And that's all the people named Ames who were on the membership roll.
In reply to both questions, there is no map or record of burials for Manville. I'm not sure about a map of Springdale. I do know that the Sexton's records are in the Jefferson County Historical Society, filed by year and not indexed. I seem to remember the cemetery itself may not have complete records.

If you don't get any other help, I'll be at home upstream from Manville (two miles) from July 1-16 with a camera.

Yes if you can help that would be appreciated. I have two family members supposively buried at Manville. Unfortunately, the Manville Cemetary records only list one of those two people. The other person is the wife of the one listed and some of her family is buried there so I'm sure she is there too but just not listed in their records. Springdale is the same way. I don't think their records are complete because there are a couple members that are supposively buried there but the Springdale record list on the county site doesn't have them all listed. I'm not sure if it's just not a complete list or what's going on there.

I am trying to find out which Wells was married to Nancy Stites. Nancy was the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Stites. I believe she was born in Ohio probably between 1795 and 1807. The family was in Jefferson Co. IN at least by 1826. Jonathan and Elizabeth and two of Nancy's brothers, Jonathan and Samuel, are buried at McKay Stites Cemetery. Another brother, David Osborn is buried at Lick Branch Cemetery. She also had a brother, Nehemiah Edmond, who is buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Nemaha Co. NE.

I found an obituary in Madison today for Rev. John Ross. He died Nov. 18, 1953 not 1954. Lytle Mortuary handled the funeral but it doesn't tell where he's buried. I also found an obituary for his second wife Madge Ross who died Jan. 9, 1976. It says she will be buried at Springdale Cemetery so that is probably where John is buried. I made copies of the obituaries for you and will be happy to send them to you if you send me a mailing address or I can scan and send them to you via e-mail. Just let me know.

Hi. Did you ever get your pictures? I was going to take them but I never got the chance but I can now. Some of the older gravestones have fell over but hopefully the ones you want are okay.

Old Stone House on Hwy. 7 in N. Madison. What happened to it?

I remember seeing a small very old looking (large square) stone house that stood fairly close to Hwy. 7 on east side of highway, in North Madison & think it was at north edge of town about 35 years ago. I always wanted to know the history of it. It looked very ancient. Don't think it is there any longer as couldn't find it last year.
Does anyone out there know anything about it at all???
Thanks for your help.
Don

Fairmont Cemetery – Madison

Does anyone know of a plot map for Fairmont Cemetery? Is there a cemetery office? I’m planning on visiting the area (I live 2000 miles away) and want to locate the graves of several of my ancestors who are buried there. Based upon Google Maps, Fairmont appears to be a fairly large cemetery and I was hoping to narrow down the search area and time.

In particular, I’m looking for the graves of James Vawter, Sarah Vawter, James S. Vawter, and Phoebe Vawter.

Email: arleigh@arleighsworld.com

Thanks,
Arleigh
