My children's ancestors moved from Sneedville, TN to Clearspring, IN about 1937 or so. Their grandmother was Tennie (Tennessee Virginia) Collins Seal. The Collins are in the lists of people being Melungeons. Her husband was Richard Samuel Seal(s) whose mother was a Gibson, also a Melungeon line. I have seen the name Jim Callahan in writings too. When was this talk given? I am not aware of other Melungeons that moved at that time. But with other kin in the area it is not unusual. You can search the internet and find names that are associated. I have Hancock Co. TN books if anyone needs information from them. Linda

I come from of a line of Goen's who apparently emigrated from North Carolina, Tennessee, to Jackson CO, Indiana and ended up in Texas. I just learned of the term Melungeon 2 days ago. Fascinating. We were always told we were black Irish :)

Members of this Foster family from Long Island, NY were early settlers in the Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH area. I believe there were three brothers. I have run into them while researching Fosters from Baltimore County, MD who also moved into that area in the early 1800's.

Wow. This is great. My grandfather was born in Seymour in 1879. His father, Albert Foster married Callie James in Seymour; they moved to the west and settled in Northern California. I have a genealogy of all the Fosters previous to Albert--it seems some were in Ohio before settling in Seymour. They were from Long Island, New York. Would love to compare notes; perhaps you know more about the Fosters than I do. Bert Foster, my grandfather was my mother's father. Wayne Foster, my uncle, Bert's son is 90 years old and living in Baker,Oregon. Thanks for the note. Hope to hear soon

Keziah Bridgewater Payne d 1812 was massacred at Pigeon Roost. I live only abt. 15 miles from Pigeon Roost and have visited. I drove by it for years oblivious to any personal connection to my family. Thankfully, with the help of these forums, I was able to link my grt grt grt grandmother Keziah to this part of history.

Keziah Morgan McConnell b 1813 was her niece and namesake.
I am descended from this line through her son Samuel who remained in Indiana. Samuel's (married Sarah Bess, a descendent of the Collings in the PR massacre) daughter Kate was my grt. grandmother.

Most of Kate's (married Frank Klakamp/Kleekamp)descendants are still in the Jackson County Indiana area.

Samuel and Melissa were siblings.

Do you have anything on "our" William Morgan's family history? The Morgan's and Bridgewater's are plentiful
in this area, particularly Scott County, some were quite
successful. I have no information on the Coughman's either.

I know it has been sometime since your post, however, if you ever get to the area again I would be happy to connect.

I am looking for information on the following family that was murdered in Seymour in 1893:

Joshua Lee Foster
Eliizabeth Olive Olmstead Foster
Cora Foster
Anne Electa Foster Jordan

They were all murdered November 26,1893 by Clinton Jordan, husband to Electa Foster, who then committed suicide. I saw a copy of a series of newspaper articles about this. I don't know what paper they were from but would like a copy of my own for my family records. I would also like to know where near Cruthersville they are buried. Joshua Lee recieved a military headstone because he was a Union Civil War veteran. If possible I would like photos of those headstones. Joshua Foster was the brother to my 2nd great grandmother Mary Ann Foster Steele. Thanks for any help you might provide to me.

I recently found out that this book is available. I sent an e-mail to Rosalie Haines inquiring about purchasing the book. I know there are many Jackson County people who are descendants of the Venne immigrants. This is what Rosalie sent me:

Dear Cindy,
We recently found out that the Hamilton County Genealogical Society of Ohio will be selling Udo's Thoerner's book "Venne in America".
The HCGS is a chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS). Hamilton County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 15865 Cincinnati, Ohio 45215-0865
Telephone; 513.956.7078 ...
Website: hcgsohio.org/
The price is $28 + postage. If you go to their website you will be able to contact them via email and perhaps place your order. The books still have to be sent to the HGCS from Germany and it may take 2 to 3 weeks before they are available.
Rosalie Haines

If anyone could come up with documented proof as to who the parents of Samuel S. McConnell are, they would have the undying gratitude of all of us descendants!! I have never had James as one of Samuel's sons. However, Samuel's son William married Marietta Bohall, the younger sister of Malinda. Marietta, William's second wife, was 19 years younger than him and she was twelve years younger than Malinda.I am descended from William and Marietta. Samuel and his wife Mary Ann Morgan were both born in KY but were married in Indiana. I have heard speculation that Samuel was also the son of John McConnell and Abigail Herron , but have never seen any proof. I would love to see this mystery solved.

Hi Cousin! Its been a while since my post that you replied to.
James was born in Jackson Co. IN and he married Malinda there, who was born in Meade Co. KY. Census info confirms that.
As for parents, my current tree is showing parents of James as John McConnell and Abigail Herron. But I don't know if that is just because its been told that way online so much. I can't find a source to support it.
Meanwhile, I just went through all my censuses and the 1850 census in Grassy Fork Township, Jackson Co. IN is interesting. Living next door to James and Malinda is Samuel McConnell who is 17 yrs older - old enough to be his father. Maybe that is why I originally thought it was him as the father. This Samuel and his wife are born in KY.
KY is of course a big McConnell state, so it wouldn't surprise me if our McConnells were there before IN. And Jackson Co. IN is not that far from Lexington KY (see McConnell Springs, near Lexington).

Found a link where I may have mined my more recent info:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=dkm&am...

This certainly is a confusing ancestry. I guess after 6 years I'm not really any better off than I was before.

What a puzzle....
I have since learned through an obit. that Wm. was indeed married to Nancy J. Bahall. They also had a daughter. I found a census where Nancy had remarried and Albert, John and Rachael (born in 1875) were living w/ Nancy's second husband (Leander Mantle). The obit. mentioned the two boys, the youngest 5 daughters and Rachael (Mrs. Owens)....but no mention of Sarah.

The obit. states that Wm. married Alice Winkler in 1882 but Sarah was reported to be born June 21, 1880. I have also obtained a photo of the 6 younger girls...Sarah has dark curly hair and a slightly darker complexion and the younger 5 have straight blonde hair and are fairer. I wonder if there was a wife between Nancy and Alice.

Wm. later married Julia Blackwell in 1913 after Alice's death (1891).

Do you have information on James' wife or where they are buried? I believe she died in Estill Ky. I know he died in Jackson Co., but I don't know where the stone is? I thought it was Brown, but I can't find it. I do have the pension info on James but that is about it.
It has been awhile since I have done any research. Today I noted your entry regarding Sam McConnell. You list your ancestors as Samuel, James & Malinda, William, Della ... Our ancestors are James & Malinda, Ida Mae. Recently I have found that Samuel and Mary Ann can not be James' parents. In the census records James lists his father as born in Ireland and his mother born in PA. Both Samuel and Mary were born in KY. My grandfather had told my mother that Samuel was James' father, so we don't know why this info was passed down. Other McConnell's in the Decatur Co. area list James as the son of John, b. 1778 in Ireland and Abigail Herron, b. 1776 in PA. This family was also in the Indiana area. Any info regarding records to prove who James parents were would be welcome.

I descend down from William and Mary (BRIDGEWATER) MORGAN.

The MCCONNELL'S were tightly knitted within the MORGAN line. There are a few serious researchers on the MCCONNELL line. I too have a great deal of information on the MCCONNELL's.

Email me and let me know what you are looking for and will try to help as much as possible or put you in contact with someone who can.

Sincerely,

Laurie Carpenter
