The Warren Republican, Thursday, January 2, 1896
Sarah Smith was born in Wayne county, Ohio, February 5th, 1819 and departed this life December 28th, 1895. She was married to James McFadden October 8th, 1840. To this union were born ten children, seven girls and three sons, two of whom preceded the mother to the better land. The children were all present at her death, except three daughters who are in the far west. With her husband and five children she emigrated to Indiana in 1850, and settled in Rock Creek township, where they lived for over forty years. In her youth she united with the Lutheran church, and remained a member of it until 1876, when she became a member of the Christian church at Plum Tree. She lived a faithful christian life until the master called her home. The venerable husband has lost a faithful wife, and the children a tender loving mother. The last months of her life were one continued season of great physical suffering, but she was sustained by the loving presence and sustaining grace of the dear Savior. Her sufferings have ended in the happiness of heaven, and she is with the Redeemer she loved and served here. Funeral services took place on Monday last, the sermon being preached by Rev. James Maple.
