Hello,
Azariah Bean is my 4th great grandfather. He has been a bit of a brick wall for me, as I cannot find any records on him other than a couple of land purchase records in Clay County, Indiana. Have you found any information (anecdotal or otherwise) that might shed some light on his ancestry? Did you find any connection between Azariah Bean and Wamsley/Womsley Bean from Crawford County, Indiana?

I recently found through Y-DNA testing that my Bean ancestry is a very close match to the Bayne family of Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, England. I am hoping to be able to definitively trace my ancestry back to that area if at all possible. I am guessing that a Bayne immigrated to the United States and at some point the spelling of the name evolved to Bean. Bain, Baine, and Baynes are some other common variations. It might be worthwhile to search the census records for all of these.

Anyways... any additional information you can provide on Azariah would be greatly appreciated.

I've read a published county history for Monroe County, Indiana that included a sketch about William Thomas Harden, b. 1839, IN, d. 1927, Monroe County, IN. One of his brothers, David R. Harden, was b. abt 1834, in TN, and married my 2nd great-grandmother, Martha Jane Carmichael, in 1879, Greene County, IN (records indicate she was his 3rd wife). These Harden men's mother was identified as Elizabeth Ragan Harden, b. abt 1809, NC. Her husband was William Harden, b. abt 1809, NC. The Harden name has been spelled Harden, Hardin, and Harding in various records.

I've not found any records for Elizabeth that indicates a maiden name other than this history sketch, so don't know whether it is correct or not. David was the oldest known child I've found for this couple so have wondered if the "R" was for his mother's maiden name. It's all speculation on my part, however, at this point until I can find some records to support it.

Dear Erika: Can you help me out? My ancestor Elizabeth Ragan, born in 1812, in Indiana, married Richard Ferguson in Scott County, Indiana in 1833. Do you have any idea if she was of the Ragan family of Harrison county, Indiana? All census records show her being born in Indiana, but I cannot find any parents in Scott, Jefferson, or Clark Counties, who had a child (girl) her age as a child, before marriage. I am just hoping. My g.g. grandfather, Wendelin Roos, was born on 07.09.1797 and died in about 1851. He emigrated from Baden, Germany. On 13 Nov 1824, he immigrated to Harrison Township, Spencer County, Indiana with his wife Margaretha Frosch and children (Johann Baptist, Pauline, Peter and Thekla). Wendelin was naturalized (US) on 6 Aug 1852. I have been searching for years for his place of burial, but have not found it. His Will (dated 1855) indicated that he lived in Harrison Township, Spencer County, IN. Is it possible that he was buried on his farm in Harrison Township, IN? Does anyone have information re the date of his death and burial site? His wife, Margaretha Rose Frosch (Frosche)1787-1852 may be buried at the same site. Thanks, Marie Roos

Thanks. I found that Bible info earlier this week and attached it to his record in my tree (I think). I found Catherine Russell Daniel's parents in my old papers. I have found some info via FamilySearch.org but have been unable to find names of Wm S. Daniel's mother and father. Catherine, age 17, was living with her uncle and aunt (John D. Daniels and Sarah, sister to Catherine's mother) in Floyd County in 1850 census. I think that was John's 2nd marriage, so John could be father to William. William Daniels, age 17, was living with John and Martha Oakes in Floyd County in 1850 census. It's also possible that Martha was mother to William. Martha was living with William Daniels in 1870 census. Many of them came from Virginia to Indiana. Wm Daniels stated on census records that he was born in Indiana.

It just so happens that the Milltown Methodist Church's 1872 altar Bible has William and Julia's family records in it. I assume it was their family Bible at some point.

It lists one daughter, Olivia E. Daniels, born 10 July 1879. There is also a son, John (b. about 1865) listed in the 1880 census (but missing from the Bible).

Julia's kids that I know of are:
*Lily/Lilian J. Stroud (14 July 1867-?) (Bible)
*David M. Stroud (c. 1871-?) (1880 census)
*John T. Stroud (18 Dec. 1875-?) (Bible)
*H. William Stroud (4 Feb. 1869-4 July 1873) (Bible)

Unfortunately William's parents are not listed, or anything about Sarah Catherine.

William S. Daniel (1832-1906) of Floyd, Crawford, Harrison counties

I'm trying to locate parents and any other children of my great-great-grandparents, William Solomon Daniel (1832-1906) and Catherine Russell Daniel (1831-1871, from Virginia). They were married in New Albany on Dec. 27, 1851. He lived in New Albany and Milltown. He had 3 wives: Sarah Catherine Russell (mother of my great-grandfather), Julia Westfall of Harrison county, and Julia Cole Stroud of Crawford County. Did you ever have any luck with getting a copy of Caroline Bell's marriage certificate? I'm confused because I have her father's name as David, not Daniel. You and I corresponded back in 2002 through Ancestry.com and you sent me a photo of the headstone with all the children's names listed. In FORTUNE FAVORS THE BRAVE Horace's father is reported to be David Williamson Bell.

I would suggest going to the harrison co. site on USGENWEB and looking for the phone #for the library in Corydon. The genealogy branch of it has done a lot of research for me. Also, a lot of the early families into Harrison co. came from Southern VA and Tennessee. You might look for ramily names in those areas.

also, at one time I hired a researcher who worked at the courthouse. She looked at records back in the vault for me and got a lot of info on my Simcox line.

If you are looking for a marriage record you need to check with the county clerks office, not the Health Department. The Health Department has births and deaths but not marriage.

Yes, there are still McAdams in this area. Charity's grandchildren. I had started the McAdams line of Sherman a couple of years ago and stopped, as life got a little too busy. Now I have a little more time to work on it and the Brown's of Harrison County.
My Mary Brown (D/of Samuel Brown) married a David Swartz and after he died, she married a John W. McAdams (Wesley) they had no children.
