THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, VOL. V., NO. 39 Page 3, Column 2, BLOOMFIELD, Greene County, Indiana, Friday, September 9, 1881, "Another Veteran Passes Away."
Died on last Sunday at 2 o'clock, at Jonesboro, in his seventy-seventh year, Lawson OLIPHANT. The deceased was born in North Carolina in 1805, and in 1824 he removed with his father to this county, and settled near Jonesboro. Over fifty years ago he was married to Miss PENNINGTON, on the Brannon farm joining Jonesboro. Some eighteen or nineteen years ago his arm was caught in a threshing machine, and amputated by Dr. BEARD, but notwithstanding this great misfortune, he succeeded in raising a large family and preparing them for good and useful citizens. His companion, though quite an invalid for years, has lived to pass through the trying ordeal of the separation of her husband by the will of Him who is all power. May she find comfort in the precious Redeemer's love and be prepared when the angel of death appears to follow the loved one gone before. The NEWS sympathizes with the bereaved companion, children and grandchildren of father OLIPHANT.
