Will contact you via your email. Surely hoping there is at least one male Levingston descendant from that family for DNA. Otherwise it will be great to check out other family members via obits. We just recently discovered that Tobias & his wife, Edith Levingston were responsible for the development of a town called LEVINGSTON just prior to their deaths in 1841/43.

Irregardless, thanks for all the help, this at least documents some of the data we now have. I'm hoping to eventually give more details to Delaware Co. IN genealogy society, if they have one.
Thank you soo much; now that was quick! Any chance there is an obit on Robert? He died 27 May 1921; or his children? We're trying to find out whether or not there might still be a male descendant for DNA purposes. Looks like George might be the only hope on this line; did he marry?
Robert was born in Hanover Twp. Licking County, Ohio. Both of his parents died when he was quite young, leaving Robert, a brother, Mason & sister, Matilda/Melinda orphaned. Parents: Tobias L*/Edith (McVey), both died 1840's.
There were five Levingston/Livingston(e), etc. families that moved into Hanover Twp. Licking county, Ohio pre-1810, plus a possible sister, Susannah who md. Andrew Mires. We've located three of the five, now trying to find male descendants from Tobias. Any further help much appreciated. Ronna Eagle, Newark, Licking County, Ohio.

This is late to the conversation, but in case anyone is still reading. The Samuel Payton here is an additional child of Jacob and Lois and is the one married to Mary Ann Gregory in the John Gregory probate records mentioned in one of the other responses further below.

Samuel Payton, one of the early settlers of Blackford County, and a much respected citizen, is a native of Indiana, born in Fayette County, February 27, 1817, a son of Jacob Payton, who was born in the State of Kentucky and was a soldier in the war of 1812. The father was married in Butler County, Ohio, to Miss Lois Hutchings, who was born in Ohio, and was a daughter of Gabriel and Lydia (Cook) Hutchings.
Samuel Payton was reared in his native county, his youth being spent on a farm, and his education being obtained in the common schools of his neighborhood. When sixteen years of age he accompanied his parents to Delaware County, Indiana, where he made his home many years.
September 1, 1836, he was married to Miss Mary Gregory, who was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of John and Nancy (Shidler) Gregory. Three children were born to this union -James, who was a member of the Nineteenth Indiana Infantry in the war of the Rebellion, and died in the service of his country; Elizabeth J. and Susannah.
Mr. Payton began working at the carpenter's trade, which occupation he followed many years. In 1851 he came to Blackford County, Indiana, locating on a part of the land where he now resides in Jackson Township, and for twenty-five years he was the only settler, with one exception, on Section 20.
Mrs. Payton died April 13, 1851, and September 15, 1851, Mr. Payton married Miss Polly Beal, who died July 11, 1874. To this union were born three children -Marion, John G. and Samuel E. The maiden name of his present wife was Margaret Ann Hollingshead. She is a native of Virginia and a daughter of James and Mary (Scarf) Hollingshead.
Politically Mr. Payton is a Republican. Though not a church member he is a Christian gentleman and takes an active interest in religious matters.

Source: Biographical and Historical Record of Jay and Blackford Counties, Indiana by The Lewis Publishing Company, 1887.
Here is the 1930 census info:

1930 Perry Twp., Delaware Co., Indiana
Enumeration District: 36
Sheet Number: 44A
Enumeration Date: April 25, 1930
Line: 24
Dwelling/Family: 251/251

Hughes, Milen E. - age 45, married, age 26 when first married, born in OH. Parents born in OH. Occupation farmer.
" Ruby - wife, age 43, married, age 23 when first married, born in IN Father born in OH. Mother born in IN
" G. Harold - son, age 18, born in IN. Occupation farm hand.

Ancestry.com is where I got the info. On the 1930 census they are taking Gilbert's listed age of 18 and estimating his birth year to be 1912, since they don't have an exact birth date.

As for the SSDI info: his SS# is 307-05-7437. I have never requested any SS info so not sure what the process is. There is an order link through VitalCheck on Ancestry.com - SSDI, but it doesn't indicate the type of info you will get (maybe just what is posted)

I would check the Social Security Admin. From what I can tell there are no restrictions on requesting info through the Freedom of Information Act, about deceased people and if there is they will deny the request. Here is the link:
http://www.ssa.gov/foia/html/foia_guide.htm

Keep an open mind regarding informants who supply the burial/death info. Sometimes they don't know and may just guess. My gr gr grandfather's death cert listed his wife as his mother and his father as John when it is actually Nathaniel. In Ireta's case (unless of course you know for certain) maybe the informant didn't know what happened to Gilbert and assumed him to be deceased.

Also, you may want to contact Clark County, Nevada for a death cert (assuming they will release it - some states require 50yrs after death) That document may help answer your questions.
Here is the link: http://www.cchd.org/birth_certificates.htm

Hope this helps.............................Karen

Not related, but found this SSDI record on a Gilbert H. Hughes:

Name: Gilbert H. Hughes
Born November 6, 1911
Died: February 14, 2003
Last Residence: Las Vegas, Clark Co., Nevada
State Issued: Indiana (Before 1951)

In the 1930 census Gilbert's age was listed at 18yrs., with a birth year approx 1912. The census took place in April-May of that year. If the Gilbert H. Hughes listed in the SSDI is the one you are searching and the same Gilbert from the 1930 census then he wouldn't turn 19 until November after the census was taken, which would then put his birth year at 1911. Also the fact that the SS# was issued in Indiana would possibly indicate this could very well be your Gilbert H. Hughes, but in order to confirm/reject this info, you may want to consider requesting the SSDI records for the above Gilbert H. Hughes.

I hope this helps..........................Karen

I changed my search criteria and found the 1930 census info.

I went through the Vital Check link on Ancestry.com. They rrequire that you identify your relationship to the person you are requesting info. As you'd expect the choices are for direct family members, not 2nd cousins. It is also very expensive - $50+.

I think I'll try using the Message Board in Las Vegas, Clark Co., NV to see if someone can find an obit for Gilbert or Ireta.

Not long after I started my genealogy work I realized that most info was only as good as the person recording it, so I've tried to be careful in double checking sources to verify info. The burial info for Ireta is a standard form used by the Beech Grove Cemetery.

Thank you for the information. I have most of this, but there are a few new details.

Milen and Ruby are both buried in the Beech Grove Cemetery in Muncie. There is a headstone nearby which has their daughter-in-law's name, Ireta Josephine, and one of their grandson's name who died at age 13. Their son's name, Gilbert Harold Hughes and birthyear are on the marker, but no date of death. Ireta's obit and burial info says she was a widow at the time of her death in 1985, so I'm uncertain where Gilbert H. may be. Their oldest son, Larry, was born in the early 1940's and their daughter was born in the late 1940's, but I have no further info on either of them. They would be my 2nd cousins and it would be interesting to know something about them.
Karen,

Thanks. This could be valid info. According to the Beech Grove Cemetery burial info I have the last know address for Ireta Josephine Hughes, Gilbert Harold Hughes' mother, was Las Vegas. G. Harold Hughes year of birth on the headstone is 1911. However, Ireta's burial info in 1985 indicates she was a widow, so that may refute the info you have found on Gilbert Hughes.

Other than on-line searches I have not requested actual SSDI records. Is that a cumbersome process? Are there privacy law complications? Did you find a SS # for Gilbert?

Did you find the 1930 Census info through a basic search? I couldn't find this info.

Ruby was one of my grandmother's sisters. She and Milen managed the Delaware County Children's home for many years. They had one son, Gilbert Harold Hughes, who married Ireta Josephine (maiden name unknown). They had 2 grandsons, Larry and Louie, and one granddaughter Dorene. I would be interested in any information about their family.

Steve, I have two "Bell" news clips. One (dated: July 20, 1919) references David Bell, a Civil War survivor, and member of the John H. Wilson Post 419 G.A.R., Albany, Indiana. The other, W.V. Bell, principal Albany High School (undated). Both include pictures. If your line, or fringe, forward your snail mail address to ekdeitrick@gmail.com and I'll send to you.
Hope one or both are a match for you,
Liz
