Jacob Shuman was born in Franklin county, Penn., June 10, 1829, and died at his home, South Wayne St., Waterloo, Ind., July 19, 1890; aged 61 yrs, 1 mo., 9 days. In 1856 the deceased moved to Steuben Co., and in 1867 to DeKalb Co., and a few years ago he moved to Waterloo. He was a hard working man, and his health failing him in a measure, he sought lighter work in town, not being able to do the hard labor of farm life. For several years he served a sexton at the school house, and also at the U. B. church. He was a member of the Salem Reformed church, and died in full triumph of his faith, being conscious up to the last moments of earthly existence. He leaves surviving him, a wife and five children three daughters and two sons, all of whom were present at the obsequies, which were held in the Presbyterian church, at 2:30 p. m., on Sunday. The church was crowded, and many were unable to gain an entrance. Rev. R. M. Hayes, of the Presbyterian church, Ft. Wayne, preached a powerful sermon to the living, and offered consolation to the afflicted, as those who mourn not without hope. Rev. Clayton of the Reformed church was present and took part in the services. The number of school children present was noticeable, and each one bore evidence of sorrow for a friend. The teachers of the public school prepared a beautiful sickle of the flowers and sheaf of wheat; and the members of the Y. P. S. C. E., presented a lovely floral offering, representing a cross and crown. The remains were placed to rest in the Waterloo cemetery. (Re: Waterloo Press - July 24, 1890
