My William Charles Carr died in Indianapolis on 2 Jul 1936. He had been married twice: to Mary Ellen Maloney in 1886 (Hendricks Co) and to Helena "Ellen" Maloney in 1901 (Benton Co). His two wives were 1st cousins.

"When" he was born is a good question, and the real reason I posted my inquiry. I have several sources that put his dob anywhere from Jun 1858 to Jan 1867. Census records for 1870, 1880 and 1900, plus his marriage records seem to support a dob in the early part of this range, but the 1930 census, his death certificate and obit all have him born in 1867.

I could sure use help sorting this out. Thanks for your interest.

I'm searching for information about the Patrick Carr family in Benton County, IN -- members of Sacred Heart Church in the 1850s onward. I believe he was b. about 1817 in Ireland, and d. in Benton Co. in 1891. Particularly, I am looking for some way to confirm that my g-grandfather, William Charles Carr, belonged to this family. Thanks!

Do you have them scanned in by chance? I would love to see them I have no loving Smith relatives to ask but I have a couple of tintypes of my GGrandfather (late 1890's) and a family Photo which includes GGGrandfather from around 1908. Might be interesting to see if there is any resemblance. I have found out that I am related...somehow to the family through DNA results but I still do not know who the parents were of my James Smith (1809).

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the posting. Yes, I really miss Donna's postings, so informative and willing to share her knowledge of the area there. Never talked to her in person, though I saw her photo that Louise posted a link to, what a beautiful woman. Donna said that my great-grandmother, Mary Catherine McCoy Flanagan of Ambia, IN was mid-wife to her grandmother, when her mom was born and some of the other children. Grateful for that tidbit and some others she related to me. I do have a question: Donna mentioned a couple of her elderly aunts still living (although it has been a few years, and maybe they have passed on now, I was going to try and contact them myself) that might have remembered Mary Flanagan or has Donna referred to her as she said she was known in the area as Grandma Flanagan. I'm still looking for the death date and death place of her husband (my great grandfather) John Flanagan. Their children were oldest: a girl? name unknown, son -John, daughter -Elizabeth Jane Flanagan Smith (married to Patrick Smith and lived north of Ambia, IN) and son -George Thomas Flanagan (my grandfather-married Leta Davis of Ambia also and moved to South Dakota in 1917) Any stories or recollections of these family members by your family members would be very appreciated. Welcome to the World of Genealogy! I've been at it for 11 years now. Really miss my mom, gone since August 2008. We made a good team, she with the names, dates and information remembered from her mother and my sleuthing skills! Good luck and thanks again for posting. I have been to the Smith and Benton and Perigo Cemeteries a lot as my ancestors are all there. I also know they all came from Darke COunty, Ohio and some from Jefferson Co. before that.

I am related to Hanna Smith whose father is William Smith, uncle to her husband, William Smith. Hannah's brother James is in my line, as is their father William Smith and Sarah Sprague his wife.

Melody,
My name is Troy and I am Donna's nephew. My family misses her greatly since her untimely passing. My mother is Donna's younger sister, she is in her mid sixties and has clear memories of some of the families from Benton County.
My ancestry gene is beginning to rev up so I am just starting to try and get a few questions answered myself. I plan to make the trek to visit a few of the illinois cemeteries this summer. Meanwhile, if you have some questions you might need help with let me know. I can talk to my mom and / or some of my cousins that still live there. Troy Tucker

She is also a great-great grandmother of mine, and we recently found that she isn't buried in Pond Grove cemetery in Otterbein according to the cemetery records. We think she might be in Montmorenci cemetery with her husband Simon, but I have been unable to find the churches cemetery records as of yet. We also cannot find the gravestone of Simon or Edith or their daughter buried there. A lot of the old gravestones of fallen over the hill and been destroyed, so they could be one of them.
Good afternoon and Merry Christmas. My name is Jerry Brooks and my mother is Mildred P Beam Brooks, the great granddaughter of Benjamin F Beam. I beleive that may have been Samule's brother.

Both Samuel and Antoinotte are buried in the Milton Cemetery in Milton, IN (Wayne County) near Richomond. Also buried there are Susan and John. I do no know their relationship but could be children of Samuel.

Hope this helps.

Smith (Company H., 64th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry)

Corporal	18	Nov. 9, 1861	3 yrs	Appointed Nov. 12, 1864, wounded June 16, 1864, near Lost Mountain, Ga. mustered out with company Dec. 3, 1865 (Sherman's Brigade) (Wounded twice, first @ Battle - Chickamauga, Tennessee - Sept. 18, 19, & 20, 1863 & second @ Battle - Kennesaw Mt., Georgia - June 27, 1864
source (1 of many):http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohscogs/Veterans/CivilWar....
"George H. Smith, ex-county auditor of Benton County, and one of its enterprising and progressive farmers, resides on section 10, Union Township, Benton County, his home being pleasantly located seven miles north of Fowler, Indiana. He was born in Richland County, Ohio, near Shelby, on the 22nd day of February, 1844, and there remained on a farm until seventeen years of age; and being no longer able to content himself at home while his country was endangered, he offered his services to the government, and enlisted November 9, 1861, as a member of Company H, Sixty-fourth Ohio Infantry. With that command he went to the front and served during the war with the Army of the Cumberland. He was wounded at Chickamauga, and also at Kenesaw Mountain. The latter wound being very serious, he was confined in the hospital for seven months. When he had sufficiently recovered, he rejoined his regiment, then stationed at Athens, Alabama, and served until January, 1866, when he was honorably discharged, with the rank of corporal, at Columbus, Ohio.

The country no longer needing his services, Mr. Smith returned to his home in Shelby, Ohio, where he remained until the spring of 1871, when he came to Benton County and located upon the farm which has since been his place of residence. Here he has a finely improved tract of land, comprising one hundred and sixty acres. The greater part of this is under a high state of cultivation, and the waving fields of grain indicate the thrift, enterprise and careful supervision of the owner. He has made excellent improvements upon his property and is regarded as one of the leading agriculturists of the community.

Mr. Smith was married, in 1874, to Miss Mary E. Drake, and they have an interesting family of five children: Annie B., Dora, Don Carlos, Edwin and Edna, the last two being twins. In his political views Mr. Smith is a Democrat. He served as trustee of Union Township, Benton County, from 1882 until 1886, and in 1892 he was elected county auditor for four years, and discharged the duties of that position in a prompt and able manner. In all his duties of citizenship he displays the same loyalty that he manifested when on southern battlefields he followed the stars and stripes to victory. Socially he is connected with the Masonic Lodge, No. 444, of Goodland, and of the Order of the Eastern Star, of Fowler. He continues his army relations through his membership in the Grand Army post of Goodland." source (2nd of many): http://countyhistory.org/books/doc.benton/308.htm

You could write to the Benton Review in Fowler or the Lafayette Journal and Courier Lafayette IN. His daughter, Linda Sproull (husband's name Lewis) lives in Oxford.I knew
"Swede"for 34 years-He was a good man and always happy-when Lillis went to the nursing home he visited her every day. He is buried in the Justus Cemetry in Oxford. The Benton County Historical Society in Fowler has a lot of information about the whole county.

The Curwick Family has been written in many ways such as Kirrick, Keroac, Curwick, Kerrick among a few. My Great, Great Grandparents Paul & Mina lived in Benton County around Earl Park between 1890 and 1906 I believe. I am trying to find the birth records for up to 6 children born in Benton County before 1900 census. The couple was married in Cloud County Kansas in 1890. They had 6 kids by 1900 census but only 3 lived. I do not know where the 3 children that died were born or died. It could be Kansas or it could be Indiana. Lovina (Ollie) Rose was born in Benton County on July 11, 1894. Stephen Edmund was born in Earl Park on November 15, 1894. My great grandmother Marie (Mary) Deline was born in Earl Park on December 30, 1898. I do not remember where I got my info at but the 3 children who died were supposed to be named Adeline, Delane, & Amos. Amos died in a diphtheria epidemic. I have no dates on any of these 3 children, nor full names, birth place, death place, or burial place. There were 3 older children who might have also been born in Benton County. In 1901 Blanche Curwick was born. I have no exact date and she lived for several years. On January 22, 1903 Homer Clarence was born and he lived until 1985 in Monon. Then Evonne was born in 1905. I do not know if she was born in Benton County Indiana or Clifton,Iroquois County Illinois.
I have been to Benton County to do research but do not remember if I was there at the wrong time of day to research or if all I was able to look through was the cemetery records. Quite possible in those days if a child died he or she was buried right there on their own property.
Thank you in Advance
Cindy

Great job you did posting the images of the St. Mary Catholic Church records!

I might contact you later for two or three better image scans for records I found.
I have viewed the church record book, St. Mary Catholic Church, Dunnington, Indiana. I have posted images of baptisms, confirmations, marriages, internments starting back in 1875. These can be found on facebook dot com. Do a search for the "dunnington" group and then go to the photos. The images of the old records books are in aptly named photo albums. Some of the images are indexes, with the pages following in correct order. If you find an image you want, but the quality is not good enough, contact me and I will email you the particular image(s).

http://www.facebook.com/groups/173689499182/

Louise,
Hi. I signed up on Facebook to view the St. Mary Catholic Church, Dunnington, IN record images but cannot seem to access them.

I have never been on facebook before and I typed in "dunnington" in the search field like you said. It only pulled up a page that had Dunnington, Indiana.

Could you be more explicit in your directions to view the images to a newcomer like me?

Thank you and I appreciate it very much.

Melody Marshall
South Dakota
mymarshall@yahoo.com
Thank you so much for this lead. I checked out Findagrave and also the records of McConnell Cemetery and it all fits nicely - "wife of T. M." (her husband's initials) and age 30 - the correct age. She would have died days after the birth of her last baby who was born the 1st.

I wondered why she should be buried in a different cemetery than her husband and children but they all died at a much later date. Perhaps the McConnell plot was the only one available at the time of Harriet's death and then, there was no room for anyone else.

Will need to confirm but I think we found her. Thank you again.

I am finding Harriet A. Wilkerson buried in the McConnell Cemetery in Oxford, Benton County. Date of death is 1/16/1887. I realize it is Wilkinson you are hunting for, but the stone shows on "Find a Grave" and it looks like the transcriber may have misread the name because of the stone condition. Also deaths were to be recorded starting in 1882. A call to the Benton Health Department should help you.

I found the burial records for Justus Cemetery doing a google search and now I have a big question: are they complete?

Harriet Amanda Jackson was the wife of Thomas M. Wilkinson. Harriet died between the time her last child was born (1887) and the 1900 census when Thomas was widowed. Thomas and the four children - Chet and Hubert Wilkinson, Cecil Farrar (daughter) and Lucy Vanderipe are all listed in Justus burial records. It would stand to reason that mother Harriet would be with them.

Has anyone had any experience with Justus Cemetery? Could Harriet be there but not in the records?

There is a film in the LDS library. Film # 1750827, item 7
"The Benton Review Weekly newspaper index of obituaries, Benton County, Indiana.

I realize that this is only an index.

The LDS has recently expanded their lending libraries. Our little public library can now receive the films for viewing. I am thankful for that because before I had to make 120 mile round trip drive to view the films.

Have you called the Benton Review to ask if they know where, and if, any archives exist?

I was thinking I read where the historical society received recently old papers. But then again, that may have been another county.
