George E. and Edith M
Nutt live on a heritage farm that has been in George's family well over a centruy. George was born in the large white farm home that still serves as the center of the farmstead and was built by his father and mother.
George's grandfather, John W. Nutt, was the first trustee of Union Township. Moving from Montgomery County his grandfather purchased 500 acres in
Benton County and moved his family into Union Township in 1861. Their agriculture, initially, was ranging and grazing cattle from horseback over the prairie area east of Lochiel.
George's father, Frank Carroll
Nutt (1857-1924) married LuElla
Maud Fisher of Brookston (1860-1925) in 1885. They had three children; Ivan Edgar (1896-1974); George Earl (born 8-4-97); and an infant sister, Helen Marie who died in 1903 at eight days of age. George's father was a farmer and his mother a schoolteacher.

Nutt were married on December 31, 1939. Edith (
Dreblow) Allen was from
Lafayette and a widow with two teenage children, Irene M. (born 1924) and Charles "
Bud" Allen (1925-84). Irene Allen
McKenzie and Prof. Bruce A
McKenzie, an Agricultural Engineer on the faculty at
Purdue University, have two children: son Terry L (b. 1959)--MET '81
Purdue) Colombus, Ga., married Patricia Meissner (PE '81
Purdue); and daughter Michele D. (b. 1964)--RHI '86
Purdue),
Lafayette. Two children, Gregory Allen (1954-1974) and infant daughter, Cindy Lou are deceased. Terry
McKenzie and Patricia have on daughter, Brycelyn Nicole (b. 1984) the only great-grandchild.

Nutt were active community leaders ini earlier years. George was Secretary-Treasurer of the Lochiel Farmers Elevator; on the Board of Supervisors
Benton County SCSD; Trustee and
Elder First Presbyterian Church, Fowler; Past
President Fowler Rotary Club; Member of
Benton Lodge #521 since 1919; member of
Fowler OES and Scottish Rite and Murat
Temple, Indianapolis.
Edithe was Secretary in the
Benton County Extension office for ten years; member
Fowler Library Board; Past Matron
Fowler OES; Past District
Deputy OES; 25 year Christmas Seal Chairman Union Township; Past
President of
Benton County Extension Homemakers Assn. and various craft groups.
George E
Nutt produced corn, hogs, beans and sheep on the 160 acre family farm he continued after his parents' death. He attended grades 1-8 at District School #7 in Union Township (located .5mi. west of
Bethany Chapel) and graduated in 1917 from Wadena High School. He retired from farming in 1962.
