Check Findagrave.com for information about this cemetery. Ira Grant Bullard was the son of Joseph Bullard, a Civil War veteran who died in 1887 and was buried in Milford Cemetery in Decatur County. He had been born in Ohio and moved to Decatur County about 1838. It was a large family. Joseph and his brother William served in an Indiana Militia unit in the Civil War. His parents (Ira's grandparents) were Joseph and Mary Buller from Guilford County, North Carolina. Mary's maiden name was McClain.

Not finding ANYTHING at all to connect these people with Indiana--which is not necessarily to say they weren't here; but not looking likely.

I found a couple of entries on Ancestry that refer to Alexander Joseph Grant. These report dates that more or less match yours, born May 10, 1863, Dufftown, Scotland, died 1955, Montreal. One of the two entries also includes some data about a wife Maud, but reports her name as Maud NASH, born Oct. 14, 1877, Holloway, Middlesex, England, died Dec. 16, 1964, Toronto. It's possible Nash wasn't her maiden name, but a prior married name. It's also possible those details are in error, but I have no way of verifying any of it--I don't have access to Ancestry International, so can't search Canadian censuses or anything else.

Again, I can't find a thing in Indiana to connect to any of these people. Sorry!

Donna, thanks for reply....I hope that you have further info
re:my husband's paternal grandmother, Maud(e) Caldwell Kerr born c.1875/76/77...at the time of her marriage to Alexander Joseph Grant in 1903,he was 40 yrs old & she was about half his age. They met in Ottawa Canada as she nursed the wife of Alex's supervisor on the construction of the Soulanges Canal east of Montreal.
I did understand that Maud(e) was an American, but haven't been able to find out just when she came to Canada...nor if she took her nursing course here or in the states.
Despite being younger, she died in 1949 and is buried in Cote des Neiges Cemetery Montreal, Quebec. Alex lived to
90, died 1953, also buried Cote des Neiges, Montreal.
Any further info re; Margaret Caldwell & Henry Kerr appreciated....
DMG

What is the time reference? 1850? 1950? What is their connection to Bartholomew Co.? Died when & where? Caldwell is a familiar name here. 27 Caldwell marriages, only 10 Kerr marriages (that is, up to about 1960.)

See Bartholomew Co.
I am looking for any information on Elbert Brabson Purcell (Pursell, Persell)who lived in Grundy/ Coffee County, Tennessee in 1870. This is NOT the Alexander Brabson Purcell in Grundy County in the 1850 Census. He was born about 1830 in Tennessee and died in Bryan County Oklahoma in 1914. He married a Sain that was from Tennessee in Texas. I am particularly interested in his parents.
I will be going to the Bartholomew History Center. That is where they have most of this information. The original chart is at the Barth. Co. Library. I have looked at it but it is hard to study without making unnecessary creases in it. The Hist. Bldg. has a copy that is easier to handle. (The paper is more flexible while the original is very stiff and hard to handle.) I have a list of sources, from different people, that I want to check on. I don't live far from the place. It's just a matter of finding time to go.
No, as yet, I don't have the copy from the Champaign Co. book.
KYKID

My only source is a family scroll chart done in the 50s by the Steinberger family.
REF Below:
-----------------------------------------------------
I have a scroll of the Steinberger family that starts at John Steinberger I entering the USA. This scroll is A Steinberger Family tree “Genealogy Of The Friedrick And John Stonebarger – Steinberger Families In America” made by Sue Mohr circa 1959. This document is a large scroll 42" wide by 12 Feet in length. The chart was handwritten and copied as a "blueprint-ozalid process" for family members for genealogy information. (Prior to the computer age). This copy was passed down to us. The copy is fading and hard to read in places. Someone must have the original. I have used it many times.
The chart has a letter enclosed selling the charts from John J Steinberger St Paris OH and Nora Steinberger Urbana OH.

Regards J Fred Madden

Henry and Phoebe (Febe) Owen Aton lived in Washington County, Indiana. They were the parents of (at least) Emily Jane Aton Shull and John Aton. Henry was also the father of Isaac Aton. At the same time as Henry and Phoebe, another Henry lived in Washington Co., I believe him to have been a son of Henry and Phoebe also.

Stuart,

Do you have information about brothers of Samuel (son of Matthew McCammon - b. 1774 in Ireland)? I live in SC close to Chester County. My grandmother and elderly cousin's notes indicate that Matthew McCammon was the father of my ggg grandfather Nathaniel McCammon. However, so far, I have not found information/gravesite/etc. for Matthew. I know that some think he moved to Indiana but it looks as though that may have been his son due to the dob.

edie.dille@gmail.com

Thanks. The grant to Henry Sharp was the basis of the query.

The grant to Henry Sharp on 10 Dec 1821 was for the southwest quarter of Sec. 20. The land grant states that he was a resident of Lincoln County, KY.

He does not appear in the 1830, 1840 or 1850 census in Bartholomew County. There is no indication that he ever lived in Bartholomew County.

In 1820 in Lincoln Co., KY, Henry Sharp was 26<45 (b 1775-94) and reported only one female, under age 10. A marriage index has a Henry Sharp marrying a Levina Atkinson on 18 Aug 1819 in Lincoln Co. From these two facts it may be inferred that his wife died giving birth to her first child.

The question is what became of the land granted to Henry Sharp. Did he sell it? (There should be a deed from him to someone.) Did it become part of his estate and come into the ownership of an heir? Who owned the land in 1830? Who owned it in 1840? Who owned it in 1850? Was there a relationship between the later owner and Henry Sharp?

William H. Sharp appeared in Bartholomew County in the 1850 census, showing that he was born about 1808 in Kentucky. He reported owning land on the census forms of 1850, 1860 and 1870. Where was that land and how did he get it?

Did William H. Sharp own, at any time, any of the land granted to Henry Sharp? [The question originally asked in the first query, just without naming Henry.] Was there a family relationship between Henry and William H. Sharp? If so, what?

The ownership questions will emerge from what tax records still exist and from deeds in the Recorder's Office.

The relationship questions will be more difficult.

This family was in Jennings Co., 1850 and 1860. I suspect there were TWO wives named Mary--the first, Mary Ann, born about 1829 KY, mother of Matilda, William, Lucinda, John. Then Thomas Jones married Mary Ann Short, Feb. 1855, Jennings Co. She was born about 1833, Indiana; mother of the younger children, Thomas, Eugenia, Hellen.

Thomas Jones is almost certainly a son of Thomas Jones, Sr., born 1798, died Nov. 29, 1853, buried in Edwards Cemetery in Jennings Co.

Can't find any of your family in 1880--I'm sure you've tried also! I did go through all marked burials in Wayne Twp. Bartholomew Co.; they are not there. Thomas was a railroad clerk in 1870, a job that might well have moved him around a lot. It's POSSIBLE he's the "Mr. Jones" who was killed in Indianapolis in 1888 and buried in the old Edwards cemetery back in Jennings Co.: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2...;

Sandhill Cemetery Restoration Project

Sandhill Cemetery, located on 25th St. just outside the eastern city limits of Columbus, is one of the oldest burial grounds in Bartholomew Co. Its history and heritage date back to at least the 1830s. A few of the earliest Catholic burials were made there, and it is also the resting place of soldiers of the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Additional notoriety and novelty came about in the 1940s when highway 46 was widened and cut through the north edge of the cemetery. At that time the faux door and retaining wall were designed and installed under the direction of Don Norton. (He also placed the Stone Head at the intersection of Marr and Rocky Ford roads.) The 1940s project necessitated the transfer of some graves to Garland Brook, including that of Joseph Hart, a soldier of the Revolution.

Sandhill was vandalized in late spring of 2012, although it is only fair to add that there was other damage and deteriorization already: previous vandal incursions, imperfect maintenance procedures, and the wear of more than 175 summers and winters on marble and sandstone, and heavy monuments, precariously stacked on--literally--shifting sands.

A restoration fund has been established, titled “Friends of Sandhill Cemetery,” set up as a non-profit account with the EIN number 35-0785210. The scope of the project is to repair, reset and clean or replace every marker needing attention, about 65. The projected cost of thorough restoration--using skilled technicians and proper techniques and materials--is approximately $25,000. No public funds are available. Nonetheless, over $18K has already been procured, mostly through local grants. The balance must be sought from the legions of living descendants of persons buried there. If you are one of these--or if you simply care about old cemeteries and the history they represent--perhaps you will consider taking some small part in this grassroots effort. Just as dimes and pennies built Columbus High School's Memorial Gym in the 1950s, every little bit helps.

If you have an interest in this project, please contact Ronald W.
My name is Douglas Kent Snider and I grew and lived in Columbus, IN (Bartholomew CO) until 1978. My brother Lance and mother, Carroll Lorraine Snider still live in Bartholomew CO. Ernest D. Snider was my great grandfather and Edgar was my grandfather. Please let me know if I can help with any additional information. Best of luck with your search....
