102-Year-Old Berne Resident Passes Away
BERNE, Dec. 2 - Christian C. Hirschy, Adams County's oldest citizen, died Friday morning at his home after being bedfast for five weeks following a fall.
Hirschy who lived with his daughter Rosa observed his (crease in paper) walk without ?? but his sight was failing.
When asked to what he attributed his long life, Hirschy once said it wasn't due to any eating habits, since he had always eaten what he liked and had no special diet.
He attributed it to "the goodness and will of God. I have tried to live a normal life and little did I suspect 50 years ago that I would live to be 100", he then said.
He was born Aug. 3, 1848, west of Berne. During his life as a farmer, he lived at several locations in Adams County, eventually moving to Berne. His wife died in 1928. They had had four children. A son and daughter are deceased.
Surviving are two daughters, Rosa, and Mrs. Walter Luginbill, Fort Wayne; two sisters, Mrs. Salome Wanner, and Mrs. Noah Schindler, Berne; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the West Missionary Church with the Rev. Oscar Eicher officiating. Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery. The body will be returned to the home where friends may call after noon Saturday. The family has asked that flowers be omitted.
