Information re Potterbaum/Pottebaum or Strueve

I'm looking for a family that immigrated from Germany named Potterbaum or Pottebaum. They show up in the Massac County census records as early as 1870, showing Regina Strueve before she married into the Potterbaum family. Regina shows her family as being from Hanover, Germany.

By 1880, Regina and Ernst Potterbaum are in the census for Massac County as a family, with Ernst showing his parents as being from Prussia. They have a son Ernst, plus other siblings.

Ernst or Ernest seems to have married Martha Meyer at some point, and they show up in the 1910 Massac County Census.

Martha Meyer was also born in Massac County and was the daughter of Friedrik Meyer and his wife Mary. Mary was born in Ohio, and I can't seem to track down her maiden name much less her parents, or where in Ohio she was born. I also can't track Friedrik back to Germany or his entry into the United States.

Basically, any information you have on any of these folks would be tremendously helpful.

Wow! Can't believe I stumbled onto this! I've just recently begun researching my family tree(s) again!

I used to correspond (sporatically) with Lucille Harney, but lost touch with her about the time she was putting together the Copeland book. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this?

I had also corresponded with a distant cousin Joyce Ivey (I believe, it's been a looonggg time) about the Copeland family. She send me a lot of material, that unfortunately it was lost in a move.

I'm decended from William though Joshua Short to Martha Lenora (Mattie) who married James W. McNana. They had a son, Joshua Short McNana (my grandfather). My dad was James A. McNana.

Someone mentioned having pictures of Sarah Short's grave? Would it be possible to get copies of those?

I hope to hear from someone soon.

Thanks!
Janette McNana

I just obtained the death record for my relative that is supposed to be buried there and the record says Leukering Cemetery is where she was buried. Now, I'm not sure whether this is the same cemetery and known for both names or what. Can anyone help me by telling me where this cemetery is? PLEASE HELP!

He died in 1918.
The family was originally fron Devon, England, but moved to Canada around 1850, and several of the brothers moved on to Illinois a few years later. My Great-grandmother Elizabeth Chick married and stayed in the area around London, Ontario.
Does any on this relate to your family?

Diane B.

Due to a computer crash and a corrupted disc. I lost a lot of information. On a search I found in the arcives a message concernig the surname Denedde. Unforturatly it is old and the email address is no longer working. So I hope the person is still on the list.

My maternal tree goes like this
Me>Laura Caroline Beckman(n)>Laura Emma Weiland (1st marriage Viel)>Caroline Denedde (AKA Dernedy, Delnettie, Daarnettie) whose parent's are E. and Wilhelmina (Lena or Mina) Denedde.

E. dies early on and Wilhelmina marries a William Neumeyer (Neymeyer) in St Francois Co. MO. He has children when they marry and they have children afterwords. About 1880, She marries Charles (Carl or Karl) Ahnert and shortly after moves to Mt. Olive Macoupin Co IL. Charles dies in 1901 and Wilhelmina in 1922. I still have not sorted out the children's last names. But I do know Sophia, Josie, Mary, Minna, Will lived to adulthood as I have a picture of them and Wilhelmina.

Does this fit into anyones tree?

Denise
Dogs are not our whole life,
But they make our lives whole.

Hi,
I am looking at some of the Davidsons from TN who ended up in and around the area of IL you have discussed in posts. My link is to a Jesse Davidson whose parents were from Dickson County, Tn and links to Montgomery...and possibly Henry Counties.
Jesse Davidson was born about 1800. On the 1860 Pope IL census he has a wife Martha. I know he had the following children: William (older, born in 1820s), George, Sarah Jane, and Isabelle.
There is a John S. Davidson born 1820s in TN in Johnson, IL who I suspect may also be linked to this Jesse Davidson. A son of John S. is also reported to have returned to TN.
Given the close contact of these counties I wonder if there isn't some relationship.
Jesse Davidson appears to have arrived in IL shortly before 1850 given census information and other records. I don't find him on the 1850 census but can confirm his identity because of his mother's estate in TN.
Also, I'd like your feedback on your William's civil war record as I have that he mustered out in Pine Bluff, Ark rather than mustered in. I have that he joined service in New Columbia, IL.
I hope to hear from you.
Robin Garland

I am looking for the family of Luther and Helen (Jenkins) Timmons who were living in Metropolis in 1930. I was told they had 9 children. I know that the 3 oldest were Gloria L. (about1926), Mary J. (about 1927) and Betty Lou ( about 1928). Luther was born in 1904 and Helen was born about 1908. Luther was probably born in Kentucky and Helen in Illinois. I know that Luther was a barber and he died in 1967 in Metropolis and is buried at Masonic Cemetery. If anyone has any other information, please let us know. Thanks for your help.
Hi, Kristina. Did you find any answers? My name is Shawna McDaniel. I live in the United States and your message popped up because I am searching for my ancestors from Kristdala, Kalmar County, Sweden. My people sailed over here to the United States in 1881 and then others in 1886. I was excited when I saw Johansson and also Reinhold, but I'm sure that is a very popular names. I am new to the genealogy but some of my people have done research all the way back to Greta Lisa Nilssdotter born Feb 9, 1799. I am having a really hard time myslef finding records. Sorry, I have not seen any Bonaparts in my records.

I think you and I are searching for the same thing. You are searching for relatives here in the United States and I am searching for relatives there in Sweden.. I definitely think you are on the right path with the ancestry. com

Sincerely, shawna

I am searching for information on the McMullen fmaily that moved to massac county in 1850, they are: John G McMullen, his wife Ann Thomas McMullen and sons John G born 1849 in Ohio and James born 1846/47 ky. John the father died in the civil war, Ann remarried Joseph F Moris in 1866. I can not fine Ann and her second husband after 1866. John the son, I find on the 1880 census in Brooklyn, Massac county. He is married to Alice, the children are Grace born about 1872, Jo Mears McMullen born 1875 and Kate born 1878. I find John and Kate on the 1900 census, in Brookly, Massac county. I would appreciate any help if someone recognizes this family. I have traced John G's family back to 1750 in Delaware. Mears appears to be a family name.
Connie

It appears you have a grand bit of knowledge regarding the Copeland family and I am hoping that you may assist me in my search of defining the Copeland ancestoral line my family belongs to. My Grt Grt Grandfather was Reuben Henry Copeland b abt 1864 or 1865 in Illinois and as family lore has it his family was residing in South Carolina when Sherman's army entered and torched the town. My understanding is the plantation they had burned to the ground and all of our family perished except my grt grandfather who was rescued by a slave of the plantation and taken to Golconda Illinois and taken in by family friends David and Hellender Whiteside. I have located my grandfather in a census and this lists the names recently obtained a photo of him from abt 1907 and the family as well. The 1870 census I have lists Reuben's birth in Illinois and that his parents are from Tennessee. I have researched the Whiteside family and found a family connection listed below:

1 Dial
.. +Martha 'Mattie' Copeland
......... 2 Elizabeth 'Esther' Dial 1808 -
............. +David Shearer, Jr. 1808 - 1846 b in Guilford County, North Carolina
.................... 3 Jane Shearer 1810 -
........................ +Thomas Jackson 1807 - b in Tennessee
............................... 4 John L.
