WAUCONDA, ILL. - Stella M. Tortora, 92, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011.
Stella was born on Aug. 10, 1918, in Youngstown, Ohio to Stanley and Aniela Tochman.
She was a life-long resident of the Mahonining County area, moving to Illinois in 2008 as her health began to decline.
She graduated from South High School in January 1936 and on Jan. 20, 1945, married Daniel Tortora, who passed away in March of 2005.
She was baptized at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and continued to be an active member there until moving in 2008. She regularly visited people through the Homebound and Nursing Home Visitation group at the church.
Stella’s favorite activity at the church was her participation in pierogi making and sales. She continued to be an active volunteer with this group well into her 80s.
Stella worked for several years as the housekeeper and cook at the Convent at St. Stanislaus Church and then as a telephone operator for AAA of Youngstown.
She leaves a son, Robert Tortora of Dumfries, Va.; a daughter, Cindy (Jay) Johnson of Barrington, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kathryn and Matthew Tortora of Virginia and Taylor and Morgan Johnson of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at the church on Friday at 9:30 a.m. with services following at 10 a.m.
Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, OH.
