Joe Baker is Dead

Famous El Paso Athletic Killed in Big Wreck at Porter Ind

The J.W. Baker, who is listed among the dead taken from the train wreck at Porter, Ind., was none other than Joseph W. Baker, of El Paso, better known locally as "Joe" Evans, the famous athlete. The news of his death reached El Paso Monday afternoon. Mr Burtis, a brother-in-law, left immediately for Porter to bring back the body.

Joe had been at Albuquerque, N.M. for a brief visit and was enroute to Ann Arbor, Mich., where he had been attending school, when he met with the fatal accident. He had written a letter to his brother, Attorney Horace Baker, of El Paso, and mailed it at Trinidad, and this was received by the latter a few hours before he learned of Joe's death. Joseph W. Baker was born at El Paso June 21, 1897, and had resided there all his life with the exception of the time he had spent away to school. He graduated from El Paso high school in 1915 and attended the Morgan Park Academy in 1915-16. He then went to Ann Arbor, Mich., and had just completed his work in the engineering course and was ready to graduate in engineering with his class in June. During the war period he was assigned to the military school at Camp Taylor.

Joe won country-wide repute as an athlete. He was prominent in track athletics and football and was one of the star players on the Ann Arbor team. He was exceptionally good at weight throwing and qualified for the shot put event for the Olympian games at Antwerp, but was unable to make the trip at that time.

At Ann Arbor he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and also three honor clubs, "The Triangle," "The Vulcan" and "The Gargoyle." He was also a competing member of the Illinois Athletic Club of Chicago. He was a member of the El Paso Masonic lodge.

He is survived by his brother, Attorney Horace H. Baker, of El Paso, and a sister, Mrs Florence Baker Burtis, of Beaver Dam, Wis.

Minonk News Dispatch 3 March 1921

Charlotte Dorothea Stassburger Sauer Obituary

Minonk News Dispatch 13 January 1923

Prominent Resident of This Vicinity Succumbs to Stroke of Paralysis

Passes Away at Home Near Dana

Mrs George Sauer of Dana, a resident of this vicinity for two score years, died on Saturday morning at her home near Dana. Although her health had been impaired for the past two years and just a few weeks ago she suffered minor injuries as the result of a fall, her condition was by no means considered alarming. In fact, on Friday evening she apparently was in the best of health, when that same night she suffered a stroke of paralysis and sank into unconsciousness, which terminated in her death the next morning at 4 o'clock. She had attained the age of 62 years, 9 months and 17 days.

Funeral services were held at the late home on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock and at St Paul's Evangelical church in Minonk at 12:30 p.m. conducted by Rev Paul Buchmueller, who spoke inspiringly from the text, Psalms 73:20, "I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works." Burial was made at the Minonk cemetery.

Charlotte Dorothea Sauer, nee Strassburger, the daughter of the deceased Carl and Dorothea Strassburger, was born at Berleburg, West Pahlia, Germany, March 21, 1858. In her infancy she was brought to the Lord in the sacrament of baptism and received her schooling, and religious training, in the pious home and the schools of Berleburg. After having received her instruction in the Christian faith, she was admitted into the communion of the Evangelical church May 12, 1872, in the sacred rites of confirmation.

In 1880, she had an opportunity to come to America and then made the long journey in company of a friend. Arriving here she made her home at Ottawa, and part of the time here at Minonk..On Oct. 9, 1885, she united in marriage with George Sauer. The young couple [next few words illegible] on a farm one and one-half miles west of Dana and there she spent her long and useful life until her end. This happy union was blessed with three children, Lillie, Rose and Minnie, the last named, Mrs Minnie Helen Strawn of Dana, being called to precede her in death, Sept. 10, 1914. Just three years previous to this, Sept. 15, 1911, the death of Mr Sauer occurred, casting the deep shadow of sorrow upon the happy family circle. Sorrow and sadness was her frequesnt lot. Three step-sons, Rudolph, Christian and Henry Sauer also preceded her in death and only in the late past her sister, Mrs Minnie Smith, was called to her eternal rest. In all her affliction her faith in her Lord was a comfort, maintaining her in all tribulations, which she bore with true Christian fortitude.

Mrs Sauer was of a quiet disposition, with those qualifications of sincerity and kind heartedness which nurtured true and real friendships, and as a result she was held in high esteem by all whom knew her. In the home she proved herself ever the dear loving mother, always thoughtful of the welfare of her dear ones and always intent on making someone happy. It is especially in the family circle where she will be most sadly missed. Faithful in her obligations to her church, she applied herself to the task of living a life of piety and truth.

Her sudden death is deeply mourned by the daughters, Lilly, Dorothea Crawford and Rose Charlotte Hakes; the stepsons, William D. Sauer of Des Moines, Ia., George Sauer of Rutland and the stepdaughters, Louise Monk of Flanagan, Elizabeth Holland of Peoria and Maria Mingers of Long Beach, Calif.; one sister, Marie Tharringhausen [?] of Ohio; two brothers, Christian Strassburger of Minonk and August Strassburger of Arnsberg, Germany, and three grandchildren, Helen and Ernest Crawford and Edyth Hakes, as also by a host of friends.
Minonk News Dispatch 17 March 1921

Andrew Tomb Killed

Eureka Man Driving Truck, When Passenger Train Hits Him

Andrew Tomb, produce dealer of Eureka, was instantly killed about 7:45 o'clock yesterday morning when a heavy truck in which he was seated was struck broadside by an eastbound passenger train on the T.P. & W. railroad. Tomb was killed at the road crossing about one block west of the depot in Eureka.

According to eye witnesses Tomb was seated in the front of the truck with the driver. Eureka residents say they drove directly in front of the oncoming train and evidently did not notice it until too late to stop. The truck was turned half way around by the force of the collision and Tomb was thrown between the truck and train. His head was crushed.

The driver of the truck, a man named Floter, was thrown in an opposite direction and is said to be uninjured. Steps of coaches in the train were torn off by scraping against the truck, according to reports received here.

The deceased is approximately 50 years old, and has been in business at Eureka many years. He made regular trips to Peoria in the truck in which he was riding when he met his death. He is survived by his wife and three children: Mrs Emil Eskengren [?], of Donovan, and Fae and June of Eureka.
Minonk News Dispatch 12 May 1921

Old Residenter Gone

Joseph Engel, Prominent West End of County Resident, Passes Away

Joseph Engel was born near Metamora, on November 30, 1846. He was the son of John and Barbara (Detweiller) Engel, who emigrated from Lorraine, France, in 1829 and settled on a farm adjoining the village of Metamora in 1831. He lived with his parents until the death of his mother in 1874, after which he spent several years in Texas and Alabama, returning later to Illinois, where he was employed on the farm for a number of years. For the past thirteen years he had resided at the home of his sister, Mrs Peter Sweitzer, Sr., in Washington, where he died after a short illness on May 3, 1921, aged 74 years, 5 months and 3 days. He was a member of the Mennonite church since early youth. He leaves to mourn his death one brother, Christian Engel, of Washington and four sisters -- Mrs Peter Stuckey of Wayland, Iowa; Mrs J.J. Unsicker of Hopedale; Mrs John Ruvenac of El Paso and Mrs Peter Sweitzer, Sr., of Washington. Two sisters, Barbara and Elizabeth preceded him in death.

Mr Engel had for some time been a sufferer from dropsy and heart trouble and general infirmities pertaining to old age but had been up and around most of the day on Monday and his passing away at an early hour Tuesday was not altogether expected at that time.

The funeral was held at 10 o'clock last Thursday morning at the Sweitzer residence, in charge of Rev Val Strubhar. Interment took place at Union cemetery at Washington.

[transcribed by Amy Robbins-Tjaden atjaden@gmail.com]

QUAST, Anna E., 1, Peoria, 1870

I found some more clues today. Woodford County History says that the first marriage in St. Elizabeth's (Catholic) Parish, Cazenovia Twp., was 11 Jan. 1887, of Joseph HEITZ & Rosa KINKEL. Witnesses were Anna QUAST & John GUYMAN.

KINKEL must have been KUNKEL/KUNKLE. Rosa would have been Andrew KUNKLE's dau. Rosina / Rosie, and Anna would have been her step-sister.

The families were later found in Schuyler, Colfax, NE.  Reported in the Schuyler {NE} Sun:  Joseph P. HEITZ (14 Dec. 1899, Minook, IL - 8 Aug. 1998, Schuyler; bu. Holy Cross Catholic Cem., Schuyler) son of Rose KUNKLE & James HEITZ.  {James / Joseph?    Minook was probably Minonk, in Woodford County, closer than Minooka.}

Re: QUASET, Anna E., 11, & Otilie, 7, Metamora, 1880

Thank you for the assistance. I think that Anna E. QUAS[E]T was married as Annie KUNKLE in Colfax Co., NE, to William LAMBRECHT. The marriage is on the USGenWeb Nebraska Project which lists the marriage as Book 3, Page 430, between May 1889 & Oct. 1896.

Since I posted the query, I found in the Woodford Co. [IL] History that St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Cazenovia Twp. was established in 1878. Early members included David KNOBLAUCH. The first marriage was 11 Jan. 1887, of Rosa KINKEL & Joseph HEITZ, son of Selig HEITZ & Frances GUYMAN. Witnesses were Anna QUAST & John GUYMAN.

Now, if KUNKEL was misspelled KINKEL, as QUAST was misspelled QUASET, that might have been the marriage of Andrew KUNKEL's daughter by his first wife, with his stepdaughter as a witness. Rosie KUNKLE was seven months old on the 1870 census, so she would have been seventeen at marriage.

I also found, in the Illinois Marriage Index, Herman T. QUAST m. 16 Nov. 1866, Elizabeth KNOBLAUCH. That was the only QUAST marriage listed for Peoria County, and there are none listed for Woodford. That would be the right time for the first marriage of Elisabetha/Elizabeth who m2. Andrew KUNKEL because Anna QUASET was 11 in 1880. I cannot find them in 1870. There was a Herman QUEST, 28, of St. Clair Co., 1870.

Thanks again! This is a real puzzle!

St. John Foote Dies Last Saturday

Veteran of Civil War Succumbs to Ailments Incident to Advanced Age

Takes Part in Twenty Battles

Has Honor of Being First Soldier to Enter Enemy Trenches at Action at Missionary Ridge

George St. John Foote, a veteran of the civil war, with a record of having participated most bravely in twenty engagements, and who was a resident of Minonk for more than fifty years, died at his home in Minonk on last Saturday afternoon, after being confined to his home for a number of months suffering with a complication of ailments.

The deceased was born at New Canaan, Connecticut in the year 1844, but came west as a youth and located in Illinois. The civil war then broke out and the patriotic spirit of this young citizen was aroused and we find him on August 13, 1862, at the recruiting office at Chicago offering his all to his country. He enlisted in Co K, 88th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into the U.S. service on August 27, of that year, his age at the time being nineteen years.

His war record was a very honorable one. Decidedly reticent in his own behalf it was only through his service record and by the word of his comrades that it was generally learned that he participated in twenty battles and at Missionary Ridge he was the first to cross the ramparts and the first of his regiment to enter the trenches of the enemy. Of these deeds he never spoke and his record bespeaks for him a lasting testimonial to his modesty, as well as to his bravery.

Mr Foote was united in marriage on November 25, 1869, to Miss Anna Hollenback, who died in this city on May 1, 1901. Two children were born to this union, Edward Foote of Green Valley and Miss Laura Foote, who lies seriously sick at the Foote home. One grandchild also survives.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, Rev H.H. McFall, pastor of the church officiating. In attendance at the funeral were his comrades, the members of the local G.A.R. Post and the members of the Minonk Post of the American Legion, military honors being given. Burial took place at the Minonk cemetery.

Donaldson, Burial at Minonk Cemetery

Mrs Charles F. Knoop, a resident of Minonk for many years, passed away at two o'clock after an affliction that came over her at 5 o'clock that morning, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis. Previous to that she had been in her ordinary health.

Lena Knoop, nee Heller, the only daughter of the deceased Mr and Mrs Peter Heller, was born in Greene township November 10, 1860, where she spent her early life. After the death of her father about 25 years ago, she moved with her mother to Minonk which had since been her home. On December 5, 1900, she was married to Charles F. Knoop, who survives her. In 1906, she submitted to a very serious operation from which she never fully recovered, suffering from chronic indigestion and high blood pressure. She was preceded in death by all of her immediate family. Of her two brothers, Raymond J. Heller and Adolph S. Heller, the latter died in July 1919. Her father died at the age of 75 years, and the average life of the family was a little more than 66 years.

On January 3, 1902, she joined the First Presbyterian church of Minonk upon profession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour and had since been a faithful attendant and earnest worker. She was a faithful friend and good neighbor and was widely known in the community. Her quiet disposition with qualifications of sincerity and kindheartedness nurtured true and real friendship, which resulted in the high esteem with which she was held by all whom knew her. She was interested in every good movement, although her strength did not permit her to actively enter into all avenues of her interest. Faithful in all her obligations to her church, and to her duties in the home, she applied herself to the task of living a life of piety and truth.

The funeral was held this afternoon at 1 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev Chas. W. Donaldson. Music was rendered by a mixed quartet composed of Armin Kettelhut, Mrs J.W.
Murder article

Minonk News Dispatch 23 December 1920

Death After Murder

William Stypsock Kills Man at Nokomis, Then Loses Own Life

Last Sunday morning William Stypsock of Minonk and Fred Kosek of Nokomis were the best of friends. Both were employed at a coal mine at Nokomis and they thought enough of each other to room together. Today Kosek lies buried in a graveyard at Nokomis, a victim of Stypsock's perverted wrath, while Stypsock is in his eternal sleep in a local cemetery.

The two men were drinking and as the strange concoction called "mule" took its effect, the two became ugly and quarrelsome. Towards evening a deep bitterness arose between them and after a few words, Stypsock grabbed a shotgun and firing point-blank at Kosek, blew off the latter's head.

Stypsock went down town and the officials did not molest him. On Monday deputies in large number were sworn in, but either they could not or would not locate him.

On Monday an inquest was being held over the dead body of Kosek when the coroner was notified that a man had been killed by a Big Four train at the rear of the funeral parlor where the inquest was being held. The undertaker, coroner and jury rushed to the scene and there found the dismembered and lifeless body of Stypsock. The body had been cut in two. The jury thereupon returned a verdict according to facts stated, making mention also of the swift retribution that came to Stypsock.

It seems as if Stypsock had concealed himself all day in construction cars. He had boarded a fast train but dropped off again, just why is not known, but perhaps to secure a better place to ride. When he was attempting to jump on again, he was thrown under the wheels.

A brother of Stypsock, Charles Stypsock of this city, went to Nokomis on Tuesday and returned with the body yesterday afternoon, which was also accompanied by the president and secretary of the local miner's union at Nokomis.

Funeral services were held this morning at 9 o'clock and burial was made at the Catholic cemetery.

Deceased was born in Poland 36 years ago, but most of his life he lived here, although for a number of years he had roamed to places far and near. Most of his life he spent working in coal mines. He was a veteran of the World War. He is survived by his father, Joseph Stypsock and his brother, Charles, both of Minonk.

Thank you for the post. The info for 1880 lends credence to the family story that Andrew's sister (my gr-gr grandmother, b. 1834), who emigrated to the US with her husband and children in the 1880s, had a brother in Roanoke, which is where the new immigrants bunked until they settled in Morton and Peoria. I will start with this information.

I live in Cleveland, Ohio -- I would be happy to reciprocate if you need a lookup or other NE Ohio research.

Seeking information about Andrew Zimmermann, reportedly lived in Roanoke in the 1880s. My gr-gr-grandmother, Barbara Elizabeth Zimmermann, is his sister. She, her husband and children reportedly lived in Roanoke after emigrating from France 1881-1885, then she and her family moved to Peoria. She died in Peoria 1887.

I note some Zimmermanns from that time lived in Tazewell County. Haven't yet established whether they're related.
