Obit Look-Up - Mary A. Dombrowski, Holyoke, Mass.

I would appreciate if someone could look up an obit for Mary A. Dombrowski who lived at 161 Oak Street, Holyoke, Mass. She was buried July 6, 1940 in St. Michael's Cemetery in Stratford, Connecticut in a family plot along with her mother, Anastasia Dombrowski who died in 1939. The cemetery record has her name as Maria, but all records I can find have her name as Mary. She was born in 1903. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Charles N. and Helen Autrieth Johnson

Hi my name is Tammy Vargas and I am researching Helen Autrieth I found her marriage announcement write up in the Port Arthur Texas newspaper. She was a teacher in Port Arthur in the late 20's to early 1930's. She married a Charles N. Johnson in Jan. 1932 either the 20 or the 24. Helen was born in Missouri around 1903 and it said that Charles was from Lockport, Illinois. Anyone who knows about this couple I would greatly appreciate some help in finding their information so I can complete my Autrieth children. I might of found them in the 1940 census in Lockport, it states that Charles was born 1899 in New Jersey. And Helen is from Missouri if they fit into your family could you please help me? Thank you Tammy

Maybe a little more help and some suggestions.
Will County Genweb site
Do you know Rick Helmer?
he posted family group charts on this site 21 May 1999
they include exact birth, marriage and death dates on Johannes wife Cather REISS,
including their parents and children
http://will.illinoisgenweb.org/Families/fgs3.htm

Family search website
Ohio deaths
1908-1953
Jacob F. Zeigler
d. 16 May 1926
Findlay,Hancock,OH
married, farmer
b. CHICAGO 24 Sep 1865(5 yrs before Louise)
Father Adam Zeigler b. germany
mother Catherine HOMAN(note spelling)b. Germany
spouse Anna Marie SHAAFF

Catherine (Catarina)Hohman Zeigler Roedger is not listed
in Peotone cemetery transcriptions booklet. Neither is Adam
Mainly because Adam's know child Jacob was b. chciago 1865,
my guess would be they married there. Unfortunately because of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, all vital records were destroyed. Church records would be the only possibility.

There are a LOT of Roedgers buried around Peotone, according to booklet, no zeigler(ziegler)s, no Hohman(n)s aka Homan.

In 1945 Sioux Falls, ND state census
Louise has b. 1880,married 1900.
WHERE is she located in 1900 census? Might started there for marriage if it's not IL.

Have you gotten Louise's obituary? Did she live long enough to celebrate 25 and 50 year anniversaies?

That's all I can think of.
Hope it helps some.
Kathy

I looked over your tree, but did not see anything that makes me think the families were related.

It should not be this hard for me to find information on Adam Ziegler. He must have gone to great lengths to avoid the census.

Thanks for the tip. If I run across any information on your family I will contact you.
My friend has ancestors that lived in Will County, plus some of the family made it to Chicago also, they were also German, but I have found that their name was spelled Sickle, Seckler, Zigler, etc.
In 1860 they were in Missouri, where I believe he, Jacob Philip Sickler(about 1820 to about 1864) was killed during the war (by getting hit on head by a brick). His wife and two of their children were living in Will County, the family story goes that she went to Illinois because they had family there, I have not been able to find her or her children on the 1870 Census.
In 1880 Tresa and her sons, Philip and William are listed as miners.
Shortly after the census Philip married Regina DeBold. He got into some kind of trouble, maybe trying get Union going in mines, and he and his wife moved to South Dakota by 1884. And has always been a Zeigler in SD
Tresa and William came to SD for short time, but William didn't like it here and they went back east. Not sure where Tresa died, Illinois or possibly Kansas, where oldest son had moved to.
I can't help but wonder if Adam was a nephew or a much younger brother
The following address is for Jacob Philip Seckler

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15734583/person/305075875

Any help on this tree would be greatly appreciated.

You did a great job of answering a previous question about Ericsons. Let’s see if your magic extends to another part of my family.

Question 1: Is there any information in your Will County history which shows the marriage or death of
Adam Ziegler/Zeigler ( born 8 Oct 1847) or Catherina/Catherine Hohman Roedger born 6 May 1847?
Question 2: Louise Ziegler born 1 Mar 1870 in Chicago, died 7 June 1946 in North Dakota
Married George Erickson born 5 March 1866 died 15 April 1936 in North Dakota
If you have a marriage record for them please include that information. I am sure they were married in Peotone.

Background:
Catherina/Catherine Hohman was the daughter of Johannes Hohman and Catharina Reiss. Johannes apparently moved to Peotone about 1856 and his wife died there in 1914. Because I have not been able to find any marriage record in Cook County and because the parents lived in Peotone, it seems likely the Ziegler/Hohman marriage occurred in Peotone.

Adam Ziegler and Catherina/Catherine Hohman married about 1864. The obit of their daughter Louisa indicated that she lived in Chicago until about 1880, when she moved to Peotone WITH her parents. I have been searching under the assumption that Adam Ziegler actually died in Chicago, and Catherina returned to Peotone after his death. Catherina apparently married Charles Roedger in Peotone 5 Oct 1880 and then died on 5 Oct 1881. The 1880 census shows her married to Roedger with the Ziegler children split up between the Roedgers and his daughter Carrie Diemger. Perhaps you have information showing Adam Ziegler really did die in Peotone.

Two of the possible Adam Zieglers are:

1) Adam Ziegler born in Bavaria 8 October 1847, lived in Cleveland at time of 1860 census, died Aug 1876 or later based on the age of his youngest child in the 1880 census, (assuming she was legitimate).
This seems to be the most likely Adam Ziegler

Or

2) Adam Ziegler born in about 1817, was a Tailor in Chicago for many years, died 13 March 1880
(He would have been 30 years older than Catherina/Catherine Hohman) I think this one was married to Margaret. His death date is right on the mark, however.

You can refer to this tree to see if there is anything important that I have omitted.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/34451008/family?cfpid=1864284...

Thanks for any help you can provide

That is great!! I had date on Israel Ericson/Erickson death that was in doubt. The tombstone was illegible and the only book of transcriptions that the findagrave fellow who helped me could locate was also pretty much illegible. Your information fits exactly with the birth date of my best guess for the Israel Ericson based on Sweden information I found.

Those were some very helpful tips you gave me. I hope to make it to Peotone this summer, so I will investigate them at that time.

Thank you very much. You have been a great help to me.

Allen Erickson

Since Israel's values in 1870 census were $200 personal and $1300 real estate and his children were under age, there may be files that could help.

Good Hunting
Kathy

I visited the library there about a month ago for the first time. They do have a Genealogy & Local History department, and the librarian on duty was very helpful. I would bet that they would be glad to help you out.

If you go to the website ( http://jolietlibrary.org/ ) and click on "Find Information", there is an option on the right hand side to e-mail a librarian.

Please do post if you are successful going through this route. If not, I would be glad to look this up for you the next time I am able to make a trip over there...just not sure how soon that will be.

Hi, I am looking for the obit for Catherine Kepplinger Stender 29 Dec 1888-8 Jun 1981 in Lockport, IL. Catherine's daughter was Bernice Jones who was the informant on Catherine's death certificate. I am trying to find out whether Catherine married twice and Mr. Jones was her first husband and who her children are. I also don't have her husband Mr. Stender's first name. I sent to Grundy county for a marriage record as that is where Catherine is from but there was no record there. I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you,

I have Leona as the first name of his wife but no surname. His death cert says he is buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. I went to Find-A-Grave and didn't find him there or in Homewood that the name was changed to. I added him based on the info in the Illinois Deaths 1916-1947 and added that to his page. I am also going to post a photo of Victor and his brothers...hope someone can help? Thank you.

Hi Pat..
First, thank you very much for answering my post. You mentioned Pine Bluff Arkansas, this IS very interesting. One of my Grandfathers sisters, if I remember right, resided in Hot Springs Arkansas, My grandparents would make a trip once a year to Hot Springs to visit her. I'm still trying to find out where in Hot Springs & her married last name.
As of right now, I know of no letters, etc, that would of come from your husbands great Uncle in Arkansas. The name Lok(ck)nar does sound familiar though. Our daughter says there are some locknars that live in Minooka though & there are some still in the Joliet area.
We live about 5 blocks from where my grandparents lived on N. Hickory st, but the area became Crest Hill in 1960.
Two of my cousins might have more info I will check with them.
Would you mind if we via regular email instead of through Ancestry ? I just started on Ancestry last September & I know I have alot to learn in doing my searches. I am doing my Majetich family & Orsini family ancestries right now. My wife was an Orsini & she came to the USA in 1956 from Italy.
Well, I'll do some more checking & get back to you. You never know, your husbands Great Uncle might of been family friends with my Grandparents...
Thanks again Pat, talk with you later..
Len

Len,
I read your post on the MAJETICH family and wanted to share that I recently came accross a note in my paper files on your grandparents.

In a trunk that belonged to my husband's Grand-Uncle, Frank J. Loknar (1873-1936), from Pine Bluff, Jefferson, Arkansas, was an address for: MR & MRS JOHN MAJETICH, 2309 NORTH HICKORY, JOLIET, ILLINOIS.

Frank J. Loknar was the brother of Stanley Loknar (lived on Elizabeth St, Joliet) and Izidor Loknar (lived on Cora St, Joliet). These Joliet streets are all in close proximity of each other.

I have been doing family research for a long time and I have not come across the name 'MAJETICH'... I am wondering if you might have any correspondence from the 'LOKNAR' family.

Kind Regards

Glad to help anytime.
On James and his wife. Try Bohemian Cemetery transcriptions I suggested, then try for obits in either Coal City Public Library or MORRIS public library. Morris is in Grundy county BUT very close to Braidwood. They have been associated with each other since the beginning.
I will see what else I can find.
Kathy

Hi,

I agree that Hugh and Arthur are probably brothers but I don't have enough information yet to confirm it. I don't know the names of their parents which would very helpful. Do you have any ideas on how to find that out?

Any McCauley children you are seeing in the 1890's are probably the children of Hugh and Arthur. I have good lists of their children.

Many Will County records are not accessible online and I am trying to figure out how to get access to them. I am also trying to do the same thing for Christian County.

Any ideas?

Fred

Hello, thank you for your reply. Sorry for not including the details. Here is what I know:

According to the 1900 Joliet City, Ward 1 District 6, Enumeration District #115 census page 1:

Anna McCauley, mother, born Oct 1840, arrived in the U.S. 1863 is living with her son, Hugh McCauley, born 1872 in Iowa. His wife is Mary. This Anna McCauley is the widow of Hugh McCauley who died in Joliet in 1889.

Listed immediately above Hugh McCauley in this census is another Anna McCauley, born 1837, arrived in U.S. 1863, listed as Head of the household. This Anna McCauley is he widow of Arthur McCauley who died in 1870.

Listed immediately above her is James McCauley and his family. James is the son of Anna McCauley (widow Hugh).

Interestingly, according to the 1901 Joliet City Directory the two Anna McCauley's live at 414 and 416 williamson St, Joliet, which would be next door to each other.

I have the death and burial information for Anna McCauley (widow Arthur) but I can't locate Anna McCauley (widow Hugh) after 1901.

In addition to not being able to locate Anna McCauley (widow Hugh) after 1901, I can't make the connection between Arthur and Anna McCauley, and Hugh and Anna McCauley, other than they both arrived in the U.S. in 1863, and the widows lived next door to each other for several years, through at least 1901.

If you have any ideas how to answer any of these questions or where to look for information about them, I would really appreciate your help.

Best regards,

Fred Holloway

Koka or Kokos

Hello all. I've reached another dead end. My Moms maiden name was KOKOS but I think was originally Koka. I found a Fred and Mary Koka in the 1900 census, living in Reed, Will County, Illinois and everything lines up datewise. However, I can't get any further, because they immigrated from "Bohemia" in 1884. He is listed as a "saloon keeper" and they were married in 1885. I can't find anymore records at all on these people. No immigration records, no marriage license (which I assume would have been granted here since they are listing their marriage as 1885, a year after they arrived.) ANy thoughts on if I could find a historical society or somesuch that may be able to tell me about Saloons or bars that were in the area at the time? I'm going crazy because, even though I am from Mercer County Illinois originally, I now live in England, and so can't get in the car and start driving. Help! :)

Early marriage license application(coal city lib has) in 1869-1871 MAY have location where bride or groom was born but not likely to be specific.
School records back that far don't exist as far as I know.
Best bets
www.familysearch.org
if girls stayed in IL aft marriage and died there check IL deaths 1916-1947...same for the boys...entries in this index could have parents birth locations.
Some other states may also have death indexes which could help on this site.
Check for marriage lic and applications for boys on this site.
If you know where parents died...check for probate/estate records at the county court house in county whre they died.
Kathy

I'm actually trying to figure out what they may have had to fill out that would give info on the parents. Do you know if there were papers for school registration or marriage registration that would have any info on them? I also don't know where they left Germany from and where they landed in the US before actually settling in Green Gardens for the 1870 census. Thanks for any suggestions.
Sue
