James Keeley married Margaret Nugent in Couty Louth and all their children were born in Ireland prior to coming here. Margaret Keeley is my GG Grandmother. I received help from a Brian Felix Keeley who states that they were originally from Termafeckin which is close to Drogheda in Co. Louth. I live in Illinois and have been to see the graves in Old Catholic Cemetary in Willington Will Co where James and Margaret are buried. Their daughter Margaret married a Jeremiah McCarthy in Will Co.

Hi Michelle,
In IL-Clerk of the Circuit Court controls and administers Probate/Estate and Guardianship records. In Grundy County, located in Court house,Morris,IL. They have huge leather bound indexes. Not sure how they charge for copies. I always went there myself and did searches and made copies.

Probate/Estate records in Will County begin about 1837. They are on microfilm now, housed at the Will County Court Archives Center, 806 North Nicholson St.,Joliet,IL 60435 Tel 815-774-7495. Need to talk to whomever is in charge of Circuit Court Clerk's records. They have typed indexes sorted by approx time frames. Might also check for wife circa 1860-1875 and son Shepard. Also check Kankakee County but it was formed about 1855+ from parts of Will and other counties. Might try Henry County about 1873 for Margaret.

The earliest newspaper in Will County would be on microfilm at Joliet Public Library main, reference department but there are no indexes to early ones(earliest being about 1840).Joliet library has a website.
Good Hunting
Kathy

Probably need to get copies of the entire probate/estate records of
1.-John V VANDERVORT(VANDERVOORT)died before 1860 census showing wife
2.-Lucinda(nee TUBBS)Plainfield,Will,IL with sons William and George
Easiest one would be to locate them in Kendall County Circuit Clerk's Office
http://www.co.kendall.il.us/circuitclerk/index.htm
I have been Yorkville courthouse many years ago...very helpful then.
Will County Circuit Cler...MUCH harder...early probate/estate records are on microfilm located at
Will County Court Archives Center
806 North Nicholson St
Joliet,IL 60435
815-774-7495
depending on time of year, avtive court case loads, may have to have an appointment. They do have general printed indexes to help locate probate/estate records. Takes a lot of time(2-4 hours once there)and then may have to wait to have copies mailed. They sometimes do not take checks. Sometimes depending on clerk charge 50 censts 1st page 25 cents to 10 or 20 pages etc.
Probate/estate records in IL pre date required death certs in IL by at least40 yrs beginning in 1830'sdepending on the county.
According to IL State archives marriage index
http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html
5 of John and Lucretia's children married in will county;
George W 1861
William H. 1862
Marion M 1859
Martha 1855
Mary Ann 1851
Caroline married in Kendall County Edwin Ervin 7 Jun 1855
name spelled Van Dervort in the state index
In Kendall Elmer Dickinso can do a lookup on John V in the biographies
In Will on genweb site there is a biography which mentions John through his daughter Marion who married Thomas BROWN.
Evidently per Kendall genweb site there was an obit or death notice placed for Marian VANDERVORT BROWN giving the following info
BROWN, Marian H (Vandervort)(Mrs. Thomas W Brown)daughter of John V & Lucinda, b. 15 Nov 1838 New Hampshire,died 8 Mar 1877 NaAuSay, buried Plainfield.
I checked what references I have and only found
VANDEROORT, Permelia age 84yr10mo 18 days died 24 Mar 1909 residence Plainfield township burial Plainfield. (Note she the wife of Richard M. b. abt. 1818 NY)

Just general info on what you might find in a probate/estate record(both kinds testate(there is a will)and intestate(no will)...exact date of death and location, names of living survivors, what the person owned-land and personal property, signatures, locations, dates of events, receipts, etc. In early probates/estates probably NOT names of parents of deceased but possibly could be mention of brothers and or sisters in sales of property personal and real estate. Just have to copy every scrap of paper you find. I found when working with Kendall County, I didn't need an appointment but phone calls didn't help much..had to go there(Yorkville)in person.
Suggested 1st local area sites to visit
Yorkville Court House,Library and Historical Soc.
Coal City Public Library for WGGS collections
Joliet court archives if you don't locate probates in Kendall
Hope this all helps
Kathy

I am specifically looking in the Na-Au-Say area of Kendall County and the Plainfield area of Will county. My Vandervoort/Tubbs family immigrated about 1847 to that area. I just recently moved to western Illinois and I'm not familiar with the geographics of that area quite yet. Thanks for all your suggestions!

The largest concentration of information would be in one of 3 places depending on which area of Will County you are looking in.
EASTERN will county Crete Monee area Would be Crete Library & South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society(SSGHS)which has a website.
Thw Will Grundy Genealogy Society(WGGS)has a very good collection housed at the Coal City Public Library-covers esp. Joliet,Lockport,Plainfield, has a transcription of will county marriages to 1900 with matching microfilm of the records, transcription of will county death index, transcriptions of some very early newspapers & church, cemetery transcriptions, etc.
here's a link to Coal City Library
http://coalcity.lib.il.us/
If specific to Joliet,Joliet Public Library reference department, city directories, microfilm of newspapers 1850 to current, some of the WGGS publications, high school years books, etc.Joliet is also the county seat so can get copies of available, marriages, deaths, probate, etc from appropriate agency.
Have you searched the Will County genealogy website? There's quite a bit on it that may help
http://will.ilgenweb.net/
For Kendall county, have you checked their genweb site?
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilkendal/
Emer Dickinson who is the site coordinator, has an email and could suggest where best to locate information. He has a great deal of printed resources available to him also.He will do lookups.
Can also check out Kendall County Historical Society
http://www.kchs.us/
Depending again on WHERE in Kendall, you may also find information in Grundy County(Coal City & Morris Libraries)
and Will County(see above).
Hope this Helps. If I know locations in Will and Kendall might be able to be more specific.
Kathy

thank you. i did not know about the jerry delrose obit & the info you list, they look like promising leads. the letter in the 1940s was in response either to a request from john oleary's youngest brother - not listed in the 1870 census as he had not been born, or initiated on behalf of the ailing ellen oleary. will try the library website as well.

would you happen to have info on the naming of delrose st in joliet? or where to find info on it? hopefully the library website you list may provide some. looking on google i find it odd that the street is surrounded by streets named for famous, or infamous, battles including corregidor and bataan. my grandfather, son of john's o'learys youngest brother, survived corregidor and the bataan death march and then 3 years in japan as pow. could be some coincidence but i just find it odd for the delrose st to be among these other streets. so far searches on the delrose st name return a lot of real estate sale notices.

we are looking for the descendants of a john oleary who lived in joliet in the 1940s. not sure when they moved there but have a letter from a pastor in buffalo, ny to my great grandfather regarding 3 nieces living in joliet, il and one having married a gentleman by the name of del rose who was in the newspaper business. would anyone have any information or be able to point in the proper direction? there is a juel oleary delrose death notice on ancestry and some possible census matches from other cities at an earlier time but we have not found any more definitive information. our john oleary was born in 1869 in galion, oh. death unsure. according to his brother humphreys army enlistment paper john oleary lived in a bradford, pa in1899 - he does not appear in the 1900 census there. siblings that survived childhood were nellie (ellen), johanna, humphrey (youngest brother), and james (died while a young man). nellie and johanna both lived in buffalo ny from roughly 1900 till their deaths in 1943 and 1936. after serving in the spanish american war humphrey lived in manila, pi until his death in 1948.

My guess would be St. Patrick's as the only Michael O'Bryan and family in 1850 census is in Channahon township which is closer to Joliet than Lockport. That is IF this was your Michael.
Hope this helps
Kathy

I am trying to find a marriage record for my ancestors, but am not sure where to look.

Christian WENCK and Mary RABE/RAABE came to the U.S. in 1866 from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany and were married in Will County, Illinois in 1867. Per her obit, they were married in Joliet, although they appear to be in Homer, Will County on the 1870 census.

The obituary for Mary (Rabe) Wenck states she belonged to the Methodist church for almost 43 years, which would be from 1875/76, 1876 being the year they moved to Iowa, so I am not sure which church to check for marriage records.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cynthia

William Grover Smith

I would like any information about William Grover Smith, he died 2/16/1945 in Joliet, Illinois. His residence was 207 N. Ottawa Street and his wife was Louise, she was 43 at the time of his death. William was a switchman for the EJ&E Railroad (Elgin, Joliet & Eastern). I would like to know if he left any living children or if Louise remarried and had any children. I would really like a picture of William. His mother was Anna Pisell and his father was Louis. Thanks Jean Hohimer in Texas

What Roman Catholic churches were in Will County in 1840? I am specifically interested in 25 Nov 1840 for the marriage of Michael O'Brien (O'Brian) and Bridgett Enright supposedly in Lockport.

Thanks for the name of a researcher in Springfield. I too saw that Rose Storey in the death index but the birth date would be very wrong. I have the info from the 1920 and 1930 censuses. And a couple of items from a newspaper that indicate that she was living in 1941.
