we are looking for the descendants of a john oleary who lived in joliet in the 1940s. not sure when they moved there but have a letter from a pastor in buffalo, ny to my great grandfather regarding 3 nieces living in joliet, il and one having married a gentleman by the name of del rose who was in the newspaper business. would anyone have any information or be able to point in the proper direction? there is a juel oleary delrose death notice on ancestry and some possible census matches from other cities at an earlier time but we have not found any more definitive information. our john oleary was born in 1869 in galion, oh. death unsure. according to his brother humphreys army enlistment paper john oleary lived in a bradford, pa in1899 - he does not appear in the 1900 census there. siblings that survived childhood were nellie (ellen), johanna, humphrey (youngest brother), and james (died while a young man). nellie and johanna both lived in buffalo ny from roughly 1900 till their deaths in 1943 and 1936. after serving in the spanish american war humphrey lived in manila, pi until his death in 1948.

I love a genealogy mystery:) Did a little more checking and have some suggestions.
1st back up a little
1870 cdensus OH>Crawford>Galion
taken 20 august(this is important)
LEAVY(aka LEARY)on 2 pages
lower 1st page
Patrick 49 cmm. labr. rr values $500-$0 b. Ire
(note worked for the railroad this is important)
Julia,45,b.Ire
Hanora,14,b.OH
James,9,b.OH
Ellen,7,b.OH
next page top
LEARY(could be LEAVY)
Johanna,4,b.OH
JOHN 11/12(born in census year JULY 1869 to AUG 1870)b. OH then notation JUNE
so he was born June 1870 which matches 1900 census entry
Buffalo 5th ward,tajen 7 Jun sheet 11 B
OLEARY,John, boarder,b. JUN 1870,single,b. OH parents b. Ire,occupation SWITCHMAN RAILROAD.

1920 census Joliet
317 Collins St
O'LEARY
Anna,43,head,?wd?b. NY parents b. NY rooming house
Loretta,wife,16,b.NY FATHER b.OHIO,mother b. NY
JUEL,14,b.NY father b. OH mother b. NY
Marguerite,11,b. Tennesse father b. OH mother b. NY
J???,son,7,b.IL father b. OH mother b. NY

so the Juel mentioned in 20 Oct 1960 obit of husband Jerry DELROSE could be the John OLEARY daughter who married a DELROSE in the newspaper business in Joliet.
SSA death index has Juel M. DELROSE b. 15 Sep 1905 died 10 Nov 1988 last residence Joliet.
from husband's obit 1960-had 4 sons Arrie,Dennis,Timothy and Thomas.
1990 Alumnae directory Joliet Catholic High School
DELROSE
Arrie A class of 1953(then b. abt. 1936)
Dennis class of 1955 (then b. abt. 1938)
both of Joliet in 1990
Try internet 411 to locate them.

Have you looked for probate/estate and guardianship records
Crawford Co.,OH for Patrick and 2nd wife Julia both died 1875 per some of your other queries.

Try for obits Joliet Library-they have a website.

WHY did the Buffalo NY priest send letters to OLEARYs in 1940's? Must have been a good reason, possibly death of maiden aunts Nellie and Johanna? If so may be probate there also. To Prove relationship, any heir would have to go back at least 2 generations.
Hope this helps
Kathy

thank you. i did not know about the jerry delrose obit & the info you list, they look like promising leads. the letter in the 1940s was in response either to a request from john oleary's youngest brother - not listed in the 1870 census as he had not been born, or initiated on behalf of the ailing ellen oleary. will try the library website as well.

would you happen to have info on the naming of delrose st in joliet? or where to find info on it? hopefully the library website you list may provide some. looking on google i find it odd that the street is surrounded by streets named for famous, or infamous, battles including corregidor and bataan. my grandfather, son of john's o'learys youngest brother, survived corregidor and the bataan death march and then 3 years in japan as pow. could be some coincidence but i just find it odd for the delrose st to be among these other streets. so far searches on the delrose st name return a lot of real estate sale notices.
