Tampico is located in Whiteside County, Illinois. It is the birthplace of the only president born in IL, Ronald Reagan, and also the birthplace of R. Admiral Joseph Mason Reeves. Our organization encompasses parts of Whiteside County and Bureau County, with attention to Tampico, Hume Twp., Hahnaman/Deer Grove in Whiteside County and Thomas & Yorktown in Bureau County. We often include family histories for near-by towns, such as Prophetstown (Whiteside Co.) or Walnut (Bureau Co.). Our website offers a very interactive Message Board which is monitored daily. Assistance with local research is available. Below are the most recent updates to our website:

UPDATES TO OUR WEBSITE:

MESSAGE BOARD - SEPTEMBER/October/November
http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Message_Boar...
Mary Berge Howlett
Winter, Conroy/James & Clara Harvey
Lindquist Family Line
New Member - Solomon France & Patrick Kilroy
Question regarding a Bowling Alley in Tampico (posted under "Meaning of Tampico" message thread)
Bernadine Heintzellman/Zora Phillips
Smith Family
Elgin
Union Cemetery - Bureau County, IL
Re: Obit for Charles Welch
Charles/Glenn Welch
Descendants of Henry Peters
TAHS September Regular Meeting
Pierson/Lindquist
Lindquist Family Line
Another Way to Support the TAHS
Veterans & Honor Flight Chicago - Updated slide show of our Vets
Mark Tribue.com. - aka: Greg Glassburn
Olsson/Olson
Cornelius Cunningham
Bourquin - Walnut, IL
Max Brown
Shere/Pierceson
Australian Lincolnshire Cramptons (and Pope families)
Obit for Charles Welch
Charles/Glen Welch
John Hartley Devonshire b. abt. 1840
HS Reunions

NOTE: Our message boards are very interactive and monitored on a daily basis.
1880 Whiteside census help

I cannot for the life of me find Aldus Harting on the 1880 census, ANYWHERE. His entire family (Uriah and Evannah Harting) moved from Strasburg, PA to Sterling, IL in 1865, and I find them there in 1870. Aldus married Mary Annie Mayberry in 1874 in Sterling, but I cannot find them anywhere on the 1880 census. I find the rest of the Harting family members, and some of the Mayberrys, but no trace of Aldus and Mary Harting and their children. I've tried other spelling combinations, to no avail. I've scrolled through the entire Whiteside census image and cannot find them. They don't turn up on a search in any other location in 1880, and it seems they've vanished into thin air. When I next find them in 1900, Mary is dead, the children are scattered, and Aldus is still in Sterling. I don't believe he ever left, but where is he on that 1880 census? Is it possible there's a fragment that is missing, or am I just skipping over him? If anyone has insight, I'd appreciate it. He was my 2nd g-gfather, and we know he had children in his first marriage w/Mary, but no one knows how many or who they are. Thank you!

Thank you. I have a request in for newspaper research, including those articles, and I am most interested in the intriguing story of Arthur and Ella Magee! It seems that Ella might be the step-daughter of Aldus Harting, as she was 5 years old when Aldus and Mary wed, but a widower Aldus is living with her in 1900, and I imagine this was quite a shocking scandal for the entire family at the time!

Harting-Maybury/Mayberry in Sterling

Aldus N. Harting, b. 1852 Lancaster PA, moved to Sterling with family (Uriah and Evannah Benner Harting) ca. 1865, married Mary K. Maybury/Mayberry (b. 1850 in PA, d. 1899 in Sterling).

Aldus married Anna Schaller in 1902 and had 3 children, and Anna moved the family to MN after Aldus' death in 1916. Aldus and Anna were my g-g-grandparents, and Anna sometimes spoke of her stepchildren from Aldus' first marriage, but she never gave details. I have found vague information on one daughter, Ella Harting MaGee of Sterling, but I believe there were other Harting children and I cannot find census records of the family in the 1870s or 1880s to clarify. I would love additional information on my great-grandmother Harting's half-siblings, all of whom were born in the 1870s and 1880s in Whiteside County.

To: David T Richardson,
You may want to contact Barb Mask, President of the Fulton Historical.
They archive the Fulton newspapers and Barb is quite knowledgable on
the area. Here are the coordinates:
barbmask<@>mchsi.com (obviously you need to remove the <>)
MARTIN HOUSE MUSEUM
707 10th Ave
Fulton, IL 61252-1372
(815) 589-2997
http://www.cityoffulton.us/index.php?option=com_mtree&ta...

Also, the Fulton Catholic Cemetery shows a McAvoy descendant - Rosena McAvoy McMahon, buried there with her husband and Children. See GENEALOGY TRAILS/WHITESIDE CO./IL
http://genealogytrails.com/ill/whiteside/obitH7.html

You can also read her obit on that site. She had been born in Belfast, county Monahan, Ireland, February 2, 1829. When but 14 years of age she came with her parents to Prince Edward’s Island. I think I read somewhere in another gen chart that Mary Ellen, g/d of Cormack McAvoy, married in Prince Edward's Island. Don't know if there is a connection or not. There were no other McAvoys listed on the index, but I am not sure if it is a complete index or not.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Denise Wranik McLoughlin
Family HIstory Coordinator
Tampico Area Historical Society
www.tampicohistoricalsociety.com

There is a John O. McAvory b. 19 June 1867, d. 12 Jan 1890, buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Fulton, IL. There are many unmarked graves and the church has no record of the burials.
At that early date finding an obituary like today's with much information is very, very unlikely. The Fulton Journal might have a one-liner just stating someone died.

I am looking to obtain an obituary for Cormac McAvoy, who died on Mar 20 1873 in Fulton, Whiteside County, IL. I am hoping the obit will list his burial location as there is quite possibly a plot of McAvoy's as some of his children died rather young and I believe are buried with him.

I would appreciate anyone's time

I have only recently started working on this line of my genealogy again and I don't have that much on the family either but hopefully we can help each other out! Ira L. Long was my gr gr grandfather. The line goes as such: Ira L. Long - Robert Long - Henry L. Long - Robert E. Long- Me! I know that Ira married Minnie T. Weigant. Robert married Dora Asale Sullivan and had 13 children (2 died as small children). Henry married Luvina R. Williams and they had 7 children. Robert married Dorothy D. Corder and they had me! There are rumors that Fabian was a twin but I'm not certain! I also know some other information about the other family members so please let me know if this helps you any. Thanks and good hunting!

Jessica Long

Tampico Historical Society Newsletter & Web Site Updates for August 2009

The Tampico Area Historical Society is located in Tampico, Whiteside County, Illinois. It is the birthplace of President Ronald Reagan and Admiral Joseph Mason Reeves. The organization encompasses parts of Whiteside and Bureau Counties, with special emphasis on Tampico, Hahnaman/Deer Grove, Hume Twp. in Whiteside County and Yorktown and Thomas in Bureau County. Area towns are often incorporated by proximity & default, since many of the pioneer families originated from those areas.

We are a separate organization from the Ronald Reagan Birthplace, but we do provide web pages dedicated to them. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/R_Reagan_Bir...

We have an active Message Board that is monitored daily and we offer assistance in your local research.

We are very grateful to the Village of Tampico for paying the annual fee for the website and to TheWisp for providing free internet service at the building.

Members are encouraged to visit our Family History Library & Research Center, located upstairs at 119 Main Street, Tamipico, IL. Treasures abound - we archive the Tampico Tornado newspapers that were published from 1876-1966. Other items include our Funeral Logs, Cemetery Indexes, Family History files, photo albums, Whiteside County history books & biographical sketches. We have a computer with internet access, which members can use to access ANCESTRY.com and FOOTNOTE.com In this economy, it's a great bargain for your $10 annual fee. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Membership_D...

New Entries for August, 2009

Go to our "WHAT'S NEW" page of web site for a direct link to each new entry.
http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Whats_New.ht...

MESSAGE BOARD - AUGUST
http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Message_Boar...

* George Mingle
* JOHNSON's in Union Cemetery (Bureau County)
* Cooley
* Union Cemetery - Bureau County
* Harms Family
* Daniels Family of Whiteside County
* Conroy-Winter
* NEW MEMBERS

CEMETERIES

* Union Cemetery (aka: Whittington or Greenville/Fairfield), Bureau County - I have finished posting names, but still need to fill in the data.
Thank you for your response. I don't live in Illinois anymore and if I did I would spend a lot of time at the Dixon and Sterling Libraries and Gen. Societies.
I didn't find a Marilyn Anderson on the Sterling Library site so I sent an e-mail to the librarian.

Thank you again.
Elsie

You can contact Marilyn Anderson at the Sterling Library and for a small fee she will send you a copy of the obituary. If you live in Illinois you can order the microfilm of the Sterling Gazette from the Springfield Library through your local library and find the obituary yourself to copy. The microfilm is ordered free through your local library.

There is a town with name Scherweiler, today Scherwiller: http://atlas.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?zoom=5&latlongtyp... Elasass-Lothringen belonged to France before 1870, and to the German Empire from 1871-1918: After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the area was annexed by the newly-created German Empire in 1871 by the Treaty of Frankfurt and became a Reichsland (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace-Lorraine ) Only in 1919 Elsass-Lothringen was independent - now it is France.
This could be why on one census she lists Alsace-Lorraine and on another she lists Germany.

I recieved this typed obit years ago. I have no idea what newspaper it was in but you might want to contact the Public Library in Morrison IL. They have old newspapers on file and will do a search for obits, wedding write ups etc. They do charge a fee so ask cost before you make your requests. They will send you a photocopy of the requested newspaper article if they can find it. They have newspapers back into the 1800's.

Another option: Go to the Whiteside Co, IL GenWeb site. Find the listings of cemeteries.
Nicholas Reynolds/Mary Wright of Addison, VT->St. Lawrence, NY->Erie, NY->Whiteside, Illinois

I’m looking for additional information regarding Nicholas Reynolds and Mary Wright of Addison County, Vermont, particularly the parents of Nicholas Reynolds.

This Reynolds family seems to share similarities to the family of Griffin Reynolds and Martha Gardner in their path from Vermont, to Genesee County New York, to Erie County New York, and to Whiteside County Illinois. I’m wondering if Nicholas might be related to that branch somehow, maybe an undocumented brother or cousin of Griffin. Nicholas was born in 1777, during all sorts of pillaging in Vermont, so maybe family records relating the two were destroyed.

Any information or guesses would be appreciated.

Here are my Reynolds:

1. Nicholas Reynolds, millwright. Born April 12, 1777 in Vermont. (This is *not* the Nicholas Reynolds born in West Rutland, Vermont, son of Jonathan Reynolds.) He appears on Addison County, Vermont census in 1800. Nicholas Reynolds and Mary Wright were married December 31, 1801 in Vermont. Living in St. Lawrence County, New York 1805-1811. Son Almos born in Madrid, NY in 1808. Nicholas family appears in Potsdam, NY in 1810. Involved in St. Lawrence County militia through 1811, rising to rank of captain. In 1811 moves to Riga, Genesee County, New York; living there on 1820 Census. By 1830 had moved eastwards to Erie County, NY. Living in Aurora in 1830 and Wales in 1840 and 1850. (After 1850 might have briefly moved to Whiteside County, Illinois with children, and then returned after wife’s death in 1855.) Died August 24, 1857 in Wales, Erie County, New York.

2. Mary Wright. Born December 24, 1783 in Weybridge, Addison County, Vermont. (Her children claimed to be first cousins of NY governor Silas Wright, but I’m dubious how that works.) Her parents were Ebenezer Wright and Rebecca Stannard of Berkshire County, Massachusetts who came to Weybridge in 1783. (He was *not* the same Loyalist Ebenezer Wright of Shaftsbury, Vermont whose lands were confiscated in 1778 and who went to Quebec along with a few Reynolds.) Mary died 1855 in Hopkins Township, Whiteside County, Illinois.

CHILDREN:

3. Charlotte Reynolds. Born February 16, 1807 in Cayuga County, New York. Married Justus Frary in 1827 in New York. (Both Justus Frary and Nicholas Reynolds families living in Riga, NY on 1820 Census.) In Perry, Richland County, Ohio on 1850 and 1860 Censuses; then in Pierceton, Kosciusko County, Indiana in 1870. In 1874 moved to Dayton, Washington where son Franklin S. Frary was involved in woolen mill owned by her brother Almos H. Reynolds. Died January 29, 1878 in Dayton, Columbia County, Washington.

4. Almos Holbrook Reynolds, millwright. Born October 21, 1808 in Madrid, St. Lawrence County, New York. Apprenticed to millwright in Churchville, Genesee County, NY in 1820. Departs to Iowa 1837. Marries Mary W. Glidden around 1839. Appears on 1840 Census in Davenport, Iowa -- across Mississippi River from Whiteside County, Illinois. Obtains federal land grants in Davenport in 1845 and 1848. Children die in 1848, wife in 1849. Departs for the west during Gold Rush. Appears on 1850 Census in El Dorado County, California. In mid-Willamette Valley, Oregon 1851-1859. Moves to Walla Walla, Washington 1859. Married second Lettice Jane Millican on May 23, 1861 in Walla Walla, Washington. Died April 21, 1889 in Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, Washington.

5. Harriet M. Reynolds. Born May 14, 1811 in New York. Married William McDearmon of Aurora, NY. In Aurora, NY on 1840 Census. In Chicago on 1850 Census. In Lyndon, Whiteside County, Illinois on 1860 Census. Died August 28, 1858 in Whiteside County, Illinois.

6. Almon Valence Reynolds. Born January 13, 1814 in Erie County, New York. Married Harriet Griswold on July 1, 1841 in Allen County, Indiana. In Springfield, Allen County, Indiana on 1850 Census. Moves to Whiteside County, Illinois 1854. At some point after 1880 moves west to Portland, Oregon. Died May 25, 1890 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.

7. Nicholas W. Reynolds. Born November 23, 1816 in New York. Married Jane [ ].
In Springfield, Allen County, Indiana on 1850 Census. Died 1856-1860, probably in Whiteside County, Illinois.

8. Miranda Reynolds. Born May 10, 1820 in New York. Married Henry Burnett. In Buffalo, Erie County, NY on 1850 Census. In Richland County, Ohio on 1860 and 1870 Censuses. After husband dies moves to Hopkins, Whiteside County, Illinois; on 1880 Census there. Died 1887, probably in Whiteside County, Illinois.

9. James A. Reynolds, millwright. Born May 21, 1822 in New York. Married Elizabeth Wright (of England.) Moves to Alabama sometime in the 1840s; daughter born in Prattville, Autauga County, Alabama in 1846. Lives in Prattville, Alabama remainder of life. Died after 1880.

10. Daniel W. Reynolds. Born May 1, 1824 in New York. Living with parents in Wales, NY through 1850. In Whiteside County, Illinois in 1856 according to Nicholas’s will. In Lyndon and Hopkins of Whiteside County on 1860 and 1880 Censuses. Sometime after 1880 moved to Portland, Multnomah County, where he appears on 1900 Census. Died 1910, probably in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
Re: Nicholas Zuidema
NICHOLAS ZUIDEMA was found dead in bed at his home west of Unionville on the Garden Plain road Sunday morning (17 Oct. 1948) by his brother Henry, and his nephew, Allan DeGroot. It is thought he died Wednesday evening shortly after retiring. It had been his custom to bring eggs and butter in from the farm to his sister, Mrs. Martin DeGroot on Thursdays, and when he did not bring any in this week she was concerned about him. On Saturday she sent her son Allan out to look for his uncle, but did not see him. Sunday morning Allan went to the home of his uncle, Henry Zuidema, and together they went to Nick's home. The house was locked, but they gained entrance through the cellar door. They found Mr. Zuidema dead in bed. An inquest was conducted by Coroner C. M. Frye of Rock Falls Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The two men told of finding Mr. Zuidema and of calling Sheriff Boyd Kimmel to the residence. The coroner's jury found that death was due to natural causes. Serving on the jury were Glenn Craddock, foreman, George Curtis, Clifford Alldritt, Russell Edlund, Rensis Dyke and Bob Heusinkveld.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Reynolds funeral home. Burial will be in Grove Hill cemetery. Mr. Zuidema was born Aug. 31, 1887 in Ottawa county, Mich., the son of Nicholas and Anna Zuidema. In 1900 he came to Illinois with his parents. His brother Henry came to this community shortly before. Nick worked on farms and for a while operated a taxi cab in Chicago. He opened Nick's Cigar store in Morrison which he operated for about eight years. He retired about three years ago to the residence with 10 acres of land where he was found dead. He was married five years ago to Pauline Halliday who died about two years later. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Henry and Marion of Morrison, Cornelius of Fulton, and Peter of Barrington, Fla., Mrs. Martin DeGroot and Mrs. Fred Dykema of Morrison, Mrs. Robert Swandt of Chicago, and Mrs. Anna Pyse of Sterling. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and three brothers, George and Simon and another brother named Simon who died while small. He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Mary Alice, Madonna and Jewel Halliday who are being notified of his death.

At the inquest, Sheriff Kimmel testified to being called to the Zuidema home about 8:30 p.m. by Allan DeGroot. He went upstairs into the bedroom on the south side of the house and there Mr. Zuidema was lying dead. Mr. Zuidema was lying face down on the bed dressed in a sleeping shirt. The bedding was undistrubed, indicating that he had apparently just gone to bed and passed away in his sleep. Mr. Kimmel said he must have been dead for some time. There were no marks of violence. In his opinion he said death was caused by natural causes. Wednesday evening's paper was in the house, but the later ones were outside.
Contributed by Melva L. Taylor - The Sterling Daily Gazette, Sterling-Rock Falls, Illinois October 18, 1948 - Monday, pg. 2,
My GG Grandmother, Elizabeth Bastian, came from Alsace-Lorraine to Chicago in 1855 at the age of 14. She was born 18 Nov 1841. Her obituary in the Russell Record (Russell, Kansas, USA) says she was from Schotweiler, but I do not believe that village exits and have assumed it was misspelled. She married William Benso in Chicago on 10 Mar 1866. I do not know who her parents were or her brothers or sisters, but have heard of a brother George and a sister Kate. Could this be the same family?
