Henry R. Thompson, b 1852, Wabash Co, died possibly in AZ in 1930's

Henry R. Thompson was the son of Andrew Thompson and Harriet Degan. Henry had a sister Laura Ann Thompson who married William Bradley Fisher and lived in Wabash County, in Keensburg, all her long life. Laura and William are buried in Coffee Cemetery in Keensburg. I cannot find Henry R. Thompson after 1870, when he is living with Jane and Henry Degan, descendants of French people from Vincennes. I think Henry eventually moved west to Arizona. Does anyone know about Henry?

Henry's father, Andrew, had a sister Elizabeth Thompson who married Isaac Rogers in Daviess Co, IN. I think that Henry may have gone first to CO then to AZ with their son Henry Austin Rogers, who died in AZ in 1941.

Doctor Ben ws my Mothers uncle, and somewhere here I have picture of him . She tells wonderful stories about him. He was apparently a very kind man and often treated farmers animals when he was on the road trips to care for people, mom used to ride with him in his buggy, but we would not let her go into the houses where he was treating someone to protect their privacy. Often times when he was done, say treating the wife for something the farmer would then take him out to the barn and have him look at an ill animal. He loved to tell stories and kept Mom entertained with them while he was driving and always when he went to a farm house the kids came running out because he always had a pocket full of penny candy for them. He always gave Mom one piece while she waited in the buggy for him to return.

Let me know what you are looking for and I will pull some of the information together.

Eldon,

Those name differences are very minor and seem to fit with the general confusion that took place back in the 1800s when there was much less ability to read and write and some words and names may have never been seen in writing by the very people who went by them. In my mother's family, there is the LeGans family from France who now spell their name Leggins. My "Lochhead" family from Scotland who have diverged into lloyd, lawhead, laughead, and lockheed over about 3 or 4 generations. I also believe that those who came to this country had such a beginning ability to speak English that anyone writing down census information or immigration/ship records and so on, misunderstood them on a regular basis. I work in a college with my wife sometimes where there are a high percentage of foreign exchange students and I have a very difficult time understanding their English more often than not. And one more thing, some names just lend themselves to mistaken spellings. The less common a surname and the more open to interpretation, the more misspellings you might see, my friend whose last name is Chamberlain has seen his name spelled at least 4 or 5 different ways in records. And I have people write my first name Jeffrey as Jeffery all the time. It sure makes it hard trying to find people in records. I usually try my known spelling of a name first and then go back and see if the database allows wildcards. Most of the ones I've seen will allow you, if nothing else, to enter part of a name like "LIT" and will still find such a name as "Litherland" and "Little" without even using a "wildcard". I'll keep my eye out for any Wabash or nearby matches to the surname I find, I haven't seen it much before, but, then again, I wasn't looking at the time. Good luck.

James M. Armstrong and Sarah E. (litherland) Armstrong's deaths

My ancestors James and Sarah Armstrong lived in Lawrence county near the end of their livesbut as of this time I have had no luck finding any death information about either one. Prior to 1870 they had lived in Wabash county. and many of their family were buried in cemeteries such as Armstrong cem., and Allendale cem. Is it possible for someone to look at obits somewhere and check for these two?

James M. Armstrong b. 14 Aug, 1928 in Wabash, IL. last seen in the 1880 census in Lawrence county, IL.

Sarah Elizabeth (litherland) Armstrong, James's wife, b. abt 1831, and died between 1875, (which is the date of birth of her last daughter), and 1880, (where James shows up as a widower.)

As I stated, James and Sarah and children moved from "pleasant Hills" in Wabash county to
"denison" in Lawrence county, some time between the 1860 census and the 1870 census. James does not appear to be in the 1900 census either, I have searched the various death indexes and no luck there either. Any assistance or information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Mar 22, 1901, who was the child of James and Mary E Odam.

and Highland Memorial Cemetery has several family members as well, though spellings vary from odam, odom, odum, I am guessing that these are actually related?

Jeff,
Thank you very much for that info on Hiram.
Any info at all about burials of ODAM, ODOM, or ODUM would be appreciated. I am curious what problem my ancestors had with their surname. My grandfather formally changed his surname from ODAM to ODUM. It didn't do him any good though because I found him anyway.
Eldon

Seiler on Route Two, died this morning at 2 o'clock after an illness of five years. She was a daughter of John and Mandana Walton Gaddis and was born at Millersburg, Ind., July 8, 1859, making her age at death 79 years, 9 months, and 9 days. She was first married to Lewis Wilson in Fairfield. He died in 1883. Then she was married to Maj. Alexander S. Jessop in 1888, at Wayne City, Ill. He died at Long Beach, Calif., and was buried in the national cemetery. Surviving are three brothers and one sister, William A. Gaddis, Bartelsville, Okla., Jacob H. Gaddis, of Weatherford, Okla., Mae Gaddis Seiler, Mount Carmel, Route Two, and Bertn N. Gaddis, Maywood, Ill. One son, Edward Wilson, died in ...the rest is blacked out.

I found "ZD" first in the 1850 Wabash Co., IL census. Seems he was born around 1831 in Illinois and married Louisa LeSuere between 1850 & 1860. The last info I have on him is the 1860 census. Zedekiah and Louisa had three children: William born 1856, died 1860-1870; James Perry Odom 4-3-1857 to 5-12-1929; and Sarah Elizabeth born abt 1860 and wed Alfred Durley, Sr. in 1878. An article in the ILLINOIS WABASH CO. BIOGRAPHICAL indicates that Zedekiah died when James was age three. Louisa married a second time and had a child with the 2nd husband in 1863. I believe the daughter Sarah Elizabeth died prior to 1886, since Alfred marries a second time in 1886 and I do not find any information for Sarah Elizabeth after childbirth in 1881.

Mary Odom was born about 1838 and wed John Painter 7-4-1860. I believe she died prior to 1870 as she is not listed in that census.

Arvilla Odom was born about 1841 and wed Thomas Painter 1-20-1859 (Thomas was a brother to John Painter).

In Marriage Record Book 1 Pg 284 of Wabash Co., IL I found Gertrude Newkirk wed C. Mundy. Mr. Mundy was age 25, white, and born in Wabash County-but living in Patoka, Indiana. His parents were W H & Carrie (Best) Mundy. This was a first marriage for the groom.
Gertrude was age 23, white, and born in Wabash County. Her parents were R M & Martha (Hallock) Newkirk. This was a first marriage for the bride.

The couple was united in marriage on January 14, 1903, by
R H Carr, Minister of the Gospel. The witnesses were Bertha Mundy and Amy Newkirk.
MRCJMLEACH - Thank you so much for the information. This is a very needed "brick" to finish this portion of my family wall.
I knew the story behind the wedding, but did not know whether or not C. Mundy (Clarence Verner - my granddad) obtained their marriage license in El Paso County, Eastonville, Colorado (where he was boarding and working on his Uncle 'Doc' Eli Knowles farm) before returning to his childhood location to marry Gertrude Newkirk; or whether they bought the license and were married there in Mt. Carmel. You've saved me hours of fruitless work, and I deeply appreciate your taking time to reply.
You did know that Gene Mundy (the one who was son to Olive Leach and E. Guy Mundy) passed away quite recently, didn't you? I don't know how much our lines will cross since this info was shared, but if I can help you in any way, let me know.
Niona (Mundy) Case.

Thank you so much for the obit! You are a geneology angel! Did you happen to get the date of the obit, because it really doesn't say when she died, except today. Would you know how I can find out where she is buried? Thank you again, I really appreciate it!

Sherry

Do you know anything about James? My Pfiester worked in and retired from the Wooster School System. His name was William, wife Ella Rose (Peter). My Pfiesters came to America from Germany in 1845. Thanks for your response. Nancy
