Classification: Biography
Surnames: McGinnis Gibson Bridges
One Prudence A McGinnis married one James W Gibson on December 16, 1850 in Union County, Illinois

One Prudence A Gipson (1835 IL) is enumerated on the 1860 Hamilton County, Illinois Census with one James Gipson

One Prudence A Gibson died November 27, 1862 in PROBABLY Hamilton County, Illinois

One Prudence A Gibson is buried at Big Hill Cemetery, Broughton, Hamilton County, Illinois

The Death Certificate of James Henry Gibson, a son of James W Gibson, states his mother is one Irene McGinnis

Another son of James W Gibson was named William Finis Gibson

It appears to have become accepted practice that Samuel McGinnis and “Mahala Bridges” are the parents of Prudence A McGinnis

I do not subscribe to this point of view

I believe that there is sufficient evidence to disprove the claim that Samuel McGinnis and “Mahala Bridges” are the parents of Prudence A McGinnis Gibson.

Nota Bene: There is a Samuel McGinnis on the 1820, 1830 & 1840 Johnson County, Illinois Census

Exhibit A

1850 Union County, Illinois Census (August 1850)
Mahala McGinnis 39=1811 Illinois
Elizabeth Bryant 21=1829 Illinois
Phineas McGinnis 17=1833 Illinois
Prudence McGinnis 15=1835 Illinois
Mary McGinnis 9=1841 Illinois
Lucretia McGinnis 6=1844 Illinois
Sarah McGinnis 5=1845 Illinois
Jacob Bryant 21=1829 Tennessee

So, here is a Prudence McGinnis (1835 IL), Name, Age and Geography all comport with Prudence A McGinnis Gibson.

If one concludes that this Prudence McGinnis is Prudence A McGinnis Gibson.

And it is accepted practice that Samuel McGinnis and “Mahala Bridges” are the parents of Prudence A McGinnis Gibson.

Then based on the above 1850 Census one might conclude that Samuel McGinnis has died and that the Mahala McGinnis on the 1850 Union County, Illinois Census is “Mahala Bridges” his widow.

Contrary Evidence

Exhibit B

1850 LaClede County, Missouri Census (October 21 / 22)
Samuel Maginus 48=1802 South Carolina
Elizabeth Maginus 45=1805 South Carolina (Kentucky on 1870 LaClede)
John E Maginus 25=1825 Illinois
Mahala Maginus 19=1831 Illinois
Arena Maginus 17=1833 Illinois
Lucinda E Maginus 15=1835 Illinois
Mary M Maginus 12=1838 Illinois
James M Maginus 10=1840 Illinois
Samuel B Maginus 8=1842 Illinois

Exhibit C

The James M McGinnis (1840 IL) Enumerated with Samuel McGinnis on the 1850 LaClede County, Missouri Census, presumed son, states in his Compiled Military Service Record that he was born in Johnson County, Illinois.

So, it appears to this researcher that Samuel McGinnis formerly of Johnson County, Illinois is on the 1850 LaClede County, Missouri Census.

This evidence, in this researcher’s opinion, suggests that Samuel McGinnis is not the husband of the Mahala McGinnis on the 1850 Union County, Illinois Census and therefore is not the father of Prudence A McGinnis Gibson.
