Milwaukee's German papers also picked up the 1928 obit. for Sophia Hillebrand Potthast. A Friedrich Potthast (very likely her husband) received letters in Milwaukee from Bremen and Neustad on the Rhine River in the 1860s. The German papers reported them being held at the post office pending their being sent back to the sender.

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers collect evidence of our historic German-American culture.

Hi Stefan

Info regarding Rev John Henry Kunz's 1911 death

http://archive.org/stream/hankinsonnewsmar19101913coll#page/...

I wonder if Judith Kunz/Jones could have remarried? A possibility maybe worth investigating for her and son William in 1940 Census

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K4M1-84K

If this is indeed her, she may have remarried yet again as John Stanton Condon, died on 5 July 1947.

Transcribed from Chicago Tribune (IL) July 06, 1947

John Condon, beloved husband of Judith, fond father of Marianne, brother of Marguerite Condon Jones, son of the late John and Mary Condon. Remains at home for funerals, Erie at Wabash avenue, until 11:30 a.m., Monday. Services private.

I guess I was reluctant to ask again, and also, I am not sure this is my Denis. That is what I am trying to find out. Maybe I should see if they would help. Thank you again. Jan

I reviewed the 1860 census and see that your Dennis was in Erin with a family at the same time that John and Johanna Carroll's nephew, Dennis, was single in Pleasant Valley so they aren't the same. Have you searched for the obituary for your Dennis Carroll. Unfortunately death certificates didn't become mandatory until after 1900 for most states. Call the Freeport Public Library; they have a great genealogy department and will know what newspaper archives are available.

William had answered in an earlier query that he did not think that the Dennis Carroll buried in New Dublin (and who lived in Erin) was not the son of John Carroll and Johanna Buckley because his ancestor was Dennis Carroll, son of John and Johanna, and he lived in Pleasant Valley and died in 1891, buried St. Patricks/Plum River. His wife was Bridget Foley.

I am hoping someone can help. How do I find who the parents were of Denis Carroll who married Mary, and who lived in Erin. I am looking for a Denis Carroll whose parents were Denis Carroll and Margaret Kennedy. Thank you, Jan

I think some confusion arises because there were two nephews of John and Johanna Carroll living in the area as well. And, the nephews are named John and Dennis and are only a few years younger than John and Johanna's sons, John and Dennis. The 1860 census shows the nephews. They are living with Dennis and Bridget Carroll, and are listed as cousins to Dennis. Clear as mud?

I too am piecing together the Carroll family. John and Johanna's eldest son, Timothy, was my 3rd great grandfather. I show Dennis and Bridget (Foley) Carroll had two sons, Timothy and Michael, who died in childhood, but I failed to note where I found that info. Now I'm backtracking to find the source.

My great grandmother was Elizabeth Bartholomew (possibly changed to Elizabeth). According to her death record, her father's name was Edward Bartholomew. The problem? She was born in 1874, possibly in Quincy, Illinois, but that is currently up in the air. By 1880, she was living in Jefferson Township, Stephenson County, Illinois with new parents: Anthony and Elizabeth Briner. I have no other records. I've checked birth records for the Bartholomews. I've checked death records for the Bartholomews. I've checked census records. Nothing. Anywhere. We don't know who Edward was married to, so that doesn't help. We don't know why she was adopted, and she always kept it as a huge secret-literally taking it to her grave. I've hit a brick wall and don't quite know what to do. There is a possibility that Anthony and Elizabeth Briner put the adoption in the paper in either Jo Daviess County or Stephenson County-that is about the only thing I haven't had checked. Any ideas? I'm at a loss.

I'm very interested in your information. I'd like to know what the source for your data is - cemetery records or gravestone transcriptions?

I'm particularly interested because I think that the Dennis Carroll buried in New Dublin (and who lived in Erin) was not the son of John Carroll and Johanna Buckley. I say that with some certainty because my 2xgreat-grandfather was Dennis Carroll, son of John and Johanna. He lived in Pleasant Valley and died in 1891, buried St. Patricks/Plum River.
Dennis and Mary Carroll, Erin, Stephenson; children born in Erin

I am looking for information on Dennis Carroll and his wife Mary, both born in Ireland, he about 1817. They probably emigrated in the early 1850's. According to census information, the following children were born in Illinois in the 1850's and 1860's: Bridget, Ellen, Daniel, Mary Ann, Dennis, and Johanna. They are living in Erin at the time of the 1870 Census. I cannot find Dennis or Mary in the 1880 census so it is possible they died in the 1870's. I find only Daniel, who is married to a Mary Ann, living in Erin in 1880. His sister Johanna is living at the same address. I would like to find Dennis's death record to see what his parents' names are. I cannot find Dennis or Mary in the index that has been archived so possibly they died before 1878. Is there some way I can learn if Dennis died in the 1870's? I could then send for a death certificate. Thank you for any help.

I think I may know you. How old were you in 1961? I was ll years old and in the sixth grade. My teacher was a large nun with glasses (looked german). I can't remember her name. I was there with six of my brothers and sisters from 1961 thru 1962. We were from Huntley, Ill. I was one of Fr. Ambre's alter boys. I remember most of the nuns that you mentioned. The only classmate that I can really remember was a black girl named Vershaun Wisdom. The reason I remember her is because she beat me in a spelling bee. I'm actually going going by the orphanage on July 10th or 11th to stroll down memory lane. This will be my third visit. The last was 1994. I now live in Louisville, Ky and am on vacation that week and am going to be in the area, so, what the heck. So, drop me a line. Let me know if your who I think you are. By the way, my sisters names were Michael Peterson (7th grade) and Cathy Peterson (8th grade).

Wavie was born January 29, 1889 in Iowa & died in Lena, Stephenson Co, IL,in February 1975. She was the wife of Glenn Arnold, presumably of Lena. I know so little about that part of her life. So, I am trying to fill that part in for our Thorn family. I can remember Wavie as a very small by in the early 1950's. If anyone knows family or friends that I can contact, also let me know.

Hi, I was there with my siblings from 1961 to 1964. My name was McEllen, Kathleen but I was called Kim. They used to have homecoming weekend but since the home for children was closed they don't have those any more. I remember a Billy Young, a George" Bursler, Barb Bolden, Judy Pout, kids with the last name of Carpenter and Coon?, Osinski kids: Bernadette, and the twins James and Jane. Mike Kennedy, Roseann Triplett, there are others, but I can't remember. The nuns I remember were Srs, Aquiline, Frances Claire, Mary Magdelene (nurse) Agrada, Rosemunda, Lucy and Fr Ambre. During my last year there they sent some of us to other schools, I went to St. Mary's. I think they kept the 5th and 6th graders at St. Vincents. There was othr buildings ont he grounds for nursery, kindergarten and the old people home. I have wanted to go back and take a look but have not yet. While I was there we were assigned jobs every 3 months, I mostly worked in the office and sachristy (I think that is the way it is spelled). Anyone else out there that was at St. Vincent's? It would be interesting to get together and talk. Lots of emotional baggage from living there. Contact me if you would like to chit chat.

I've been trying to figure out why a couple got divorced in 1873 after a very long marriage. In a biographical sketch of one daughter and son-in-law, she refers to her father as a Methodist Episcopal and her mother an Adventist. I know that there were many Adventists groups at the time, some with quite different beliefs. Does anyone know of any groups in the area in the time right around the Civil War and just after? This is a mystery I'd really like to solve.

Lippe Detmold, Germany Geographical DNA Project

The scope and purpose of this Geographical DNA Project is to offer help to those reseachers who can either trace their ancestral roots to, or currently live in what was the former Principality of Lippe. Although there is a German DNA Project, the Lippe Detmold Project is designed to offer a more confined geographical area of research. Currently Lippe consist of roughly 481 square miles, this is walking distance. I originally started a DNA SURNAME PROJECT, which I still administer. Due to the German practice of changing surnames with the transfer of real-estate, either by purchase or inheritance through a female spouse, this project made sense to me. Historically Lippe has existed as a country since 1123 and was once an independent state within the Holy Roman Empire, later, it was incorporated into Prussia. Lippe was elevated to the satus of Principality from 1789 to 1949, it is now part of the state North Rhein-Westphalia. In the 19th Century 20,000 people from Lippe emigrated to the the Americas, mostly to the United States and Canada. Those of you, who want to join, please contact; Al Tieman at altieman@gmail.com

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/LippeDetmoldDE/

My father, James Robert McMillan's father's name was James A. McMillan. His father, my great grandfather was John E. McMillan. He married Electa Templeton, who my Dad said was possible adopted (he thought her original name was Stillwagon, but I now realize he had trouble reading the marriage certificate. It was "Stillvagon" I believe. The marriage certificate says that Electa didn't know her mother's name. They were married in Monmouth, Illinois December 2, 1878. You are welcome to view my family tree or email me. I'd like more info from you as well! Maria Young, maysky@q.com

Hi Em,

I am unsure if this will get to you, given that you made this inquiry in 2002 - 10 years ago. Not sure if you still have the account. If you read this and are still researching Merton Edgar Cary and Olive Witter from Freeport, IL, (then on to Iowa) feel free to reach back out to me at your convenience.

Have a healthy 2012,
Craig Cary

My name is Robin Cushman and I am doing family history for my in-laws. My mother in law's family line goes to Peter and Mary Daharsh Egabroad. I have Peter and Mary's tombstone picture from Find a Grave.com. I am looking for any information on Peter and Mary, if you have any my e-mail address is robincushman@yahoo.com Peter and Mary's daughter Catherine married Stephen Pope and that's the line that comes down to my mother in law.

I live in Webster City, Iowa and my-laws live in Humboldt, Iowa. My husband graduated from there also.

Robin Cushman

If birth and death registration didn't begin until 1916 I guess I'm lost on that one.
A distant cousin did find the marriage license for John W. & Eunice, so that's a plus.
Some of the information you sent, I didn't have, so I appreciate that.
Do you have any suggestions as to where I might find further information on the family?
Yes, my ggggrandmother, Julia Keister Rowray Strom, did live to be 103!
Thanks so much
Rebecca
