1898 envelope sent to Mrs William RICHMOND of Wyoming, Illinois from Gatestone, England

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent to Mrs William RICHMOND of Wyoming, Illinois from Gatestone, England in 1898. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on RICHMOND, select the one with Wyoming, Illinois, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I find a William RICHMOND, from England, residing in Wyoming, Illinois, USA, in the Protestant Episcopal Church Clerical Directory for 1898 (seen at Ancestry.com) but am unable to find Reverend and Mrs RICHMOND in a census or similar source and wondered if someone more familiar with the area can locate them. I believe that Gatestone may be his or her or his or her parents' birthplace and this envelope may be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The envelope is a mourning cover (outlined in black) that was generally sent at the time of a death. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

There was a Sadie/Sady? Hickey, and was quite a character, loved by all and was Catholic. Whether her maiden name was Jackson, I do not know, but she is buried in the St. Patrick's Cementery in Camp Grove. But often people married each other from Wyoming and Camp Grove and the land settlements between the two on the south side of the road is still called today, "the valley". Whether of lush green like Ireland or fertile ground I presume. But from Camp Grove you can view towards the valley and towards Wyoming.

This information is incorrect. There is only one Catholic Cementary for Camp Grove, 3 miles south off Rt.40. The other two that are mentioned that are on each side of the Rt.40, across from each other are neither Catholic. One is a non denomination cementery and the other is a Prodesent cementary. Both use to be care for in the 70's and 80's by the family's that had loved ones buried there. But most have passed on. The other non-catholic cementary is towards Wyoming, going west on Rt. 40 and since it is a maintained cementary of Stark County it is the one used for non-denomination. The Wyoming Catholic cememtery is close by. rou

The Truit's were actually founders of Chillicothe,Illinois. The family still resides there and own a bank, which was called Truit's Bank, Now National Bank. Barb Truit was president and is deceased. She never married but had nieces and nephews.
Camp Grove was originally West of present Camp Grove by the Stark/Marshal county line, across the road of Highway 40 on the south side. It was destroyed by a tornado in the late 1800's. As the railroad was coming through, and the depot was to be built up on the hill, Camp Grove moved about a mile east across the road into the southwest corner of Marshal County. The church is St. Patrick's and still has masses every Sunday. The priest from Wyoming, Illinois in Stark county shares both parishes. St. Patrick's Cemetary is cared for by the parish and is located 3 miles south on Highway 40, on the east side of the road in a remote area. You may contact the catholic parish of Wyoming, Illinois for more information. It is still an active cementery.

I see that I need to update this post -

Jay Willis Pettigrew, b: abt 1860, IL, d: 2 Feb 1926, Bradford, Stark Co., IL. Married to TOWLLIGER

Jay and Laura were children of Jonathan Nathan Pettigrew & Diana Elizabeth Blaisdell.
Jay married a TOWILLIGER and a Hattie A. SEELY.
Laura married a Asa Lake.
(I have a photo of both Jay & Laura in my posted tree, as well as more data)

The following is a bio I found on-line, the link is not working so I have not included it. Yet it does give much information on the family:

George B. Harrington A.M., Past & Present of Bureau County, Illinois - Bureau County, Illinois Historical and Biographical Sketches, (Chicago, The Pioneer Publishing Company, 1906), Pages 689-690,
" Jonathan N. Pettigrew is a retied farmer living on section 16, Milo township. He has followed the natural course of events in a busy life, for nature seems to have intended that man should enjoy a period of rest in his later years. In youth he is full of energy and hope and these later are tempered by sound judgement and business experience and when industry is well applied and when perseverance is unceasing he eventually earns a competence which in the evening of life permits him to enjoy a well earned rest. Such has been the record of Mr. Pettigrew, a most respected citizen of Milo township. He was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, December 19, 1834, a son of Nathan Pettigrew, who spent his later years in this county and here passed away. In the family were nine children, of whom there were seven sons, Jonathan N. being the youngest. He now has one sister living, Mary Frances, of Martinsville, Indianna.
Mr. Pettigrew of this review was educated in the common schools of his native state and also attended school for two winters after arriving in Illinois. He came to Bureau county in 1849 when a youth of sixteen years, arriving here with only fifteen cents in his pocket. His financial condition rendered immediate employment a necessity. He had driven across the country with one horse, an old buggy and a saddle horse, and after reaching his destination he worked at anything that he could get to do that would yield him an honest living. Thus he made his start, carefully saving his earnings until in 1851 he had a sum sufficient to enable him to purchase three eighty-acre tracts of land, for which he paid three hundred dollars.

He has since lived upon the farm which at that time came into his possession. He now owns eighty acres where he resides, together with fifteen acres of timber land, and has a well developed farm property, his home being pleasantly and conveinently situated about five miles from Bradford. He has seen the country grow from a rough prairie into one of the rich agricultural counties of the state and has done much toward making it what it is today.
Mr. Pettigrew was married to Miss Diana E. Blaisedell, of Peoria county, Illinois, who was born in Mercer county, this state. They had four children: Jay, who married Mrs. Towilliger, by whom he has a son and a daughter, and lives in Bradford, Illinois; Lou, who died in 1904, leaving a wife and two children; Laura, the wife of Asa Lake of Stark county, Illinois; and Benjamin, who married a Miss Webster and lives upon his father's farm. He has one child.
Politically Mr. Pettigrew is a republican but has never had aspiration for office nor has he ever identified himself with fraternal organizations.
He and his wife are yet very active and he is a selfmade man, deserving much credit for what he has accomplished. He has been both the architect and builder of his own fortunes and the result of his labors has been gratifying.

In Gage County, Nebraska, at the Scott Street Cemetery in Beatrice, a Laura J Champlin is buried with the family of James M Pettegrew. b. 12 Nov 1848 d. 6 May 1868
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/gage/cemeteries/scotts...

James M Pettegrew b. 13 Oct 1827 in Indiana d. 24 Jul 1872 in Gage Co. Nebraska. In 1870 he was in Hanover Twp, Gage County, NE
His wife Rachel Caroline Simmons b. 25 May 1833 in Pennsylvania d. 5 Nov 1910 in Gage County, Nebraska
(her name attested by marriage licenses' of his children) Rachel/Caroline remarried after James' death. Both she and her second husband Abraham Evans are also buried in the family plot.
James and Rachel had 5 children. All are accounted for, and thus, the inclusion of Laura J Champlin was a great oddity. But I just googled for "Pettegrew Champlin Indiana" I'm suspecting she is a niece of James M Pettegrew.

I'm not actually related to any of these Pettegrews, but James & Rachel's youngest child was the 2nd wife of a Great-Great-Great Uncle. They didn't have any children, so I figure it doesn't hurt if I try to help clear up any confusion.

Janet Harder
Nebraska

Since it has been over 10 years since you posted your message, you may have already learned what you were looking for. Your grandmother, Carrie, had a brother, Thomas M., b. 28 Nov. 1886. While Carrie was raised by her grandparents, Hugh and Frances Godfrey, young Thomas went to Platte Co., Nebr. with his mother, Nancy E. Masters Godfrey. Apparently, Nancy and Willis were divorced. You can follow Thomas Godfrey through the censuses, 1900 in Monroe Twp., Monroe Village, Platte Co., Nebr., Sht. 1B, p. 141; 1910 in Walworth, Walworth Twp., Wisconsin, Sht. 2B, p. 228; 1920 in Brooking Twp.,Jackson Co., Missouri, Sht.4A, p. 270. Thomas married Beda Anderson 29 Oct. 1910 in Jackson Co., Mo. and they had one daughter, Dorothy I. Dorothy married Frank G. Perkins in Jackson Co., Mo. 16 June 1936. Thomas died in Dec. of 1962, where I'm not sure. His widow, Beda, d. Dec. of 1976, her last known residence in Independence, Montgomery Co., Ks.

Your great grandfather, Willis Lemming Godfrey, died in Jan. of 1897, a most heartbreaking event. This was posted in the Columbus, Platte Co., Nebr. newspaper:

"Columbus Journal, March 31, 1897

DIED
GODFREY--The body of W.L. Godfrey was found floating in the river, says the North Chillicothe (ill.), Herald. When the body was found there was no coat or hat thereon and the indications were that at the time he was drowned he was in his shirt sleeves. His coat was recovered at a saloon. On the evening of Jan. 9, Godfrey entered the saloon with Thomas Humphreys and called for the drinks. They took whiskey and after it had been disposed of, Godfrey said he couldn't pay for it. In the little altercation which followed he took off his coat, threw it on the bar and walked out of the place. The presumption is that he walked out of the saloon, crossed the railroad tracks, went down to the docks and plunged into the river. In the coat was found a letter from his son Thomas, aged 10 years, and who is living at Monroe, Nebr. In the letter the little fellow mentions the fact that he will be 10 years old on the following Saturday and requests his father to send him a present. The Chillicothe Bulletin of March 26 contains a half-column account of the matter."

Your great grandmother, Nancy E. Masters Godfrey remarried in Platte Co., Nebr. 6 May 1891 to George B. Kerr. You will find Nancy E. and George B. Kerr in the censuses: 1900, Monroe Twp., Platte Co., Nebr. Sheet 3B & 4A, pp. 143 & 144; 1910 in Boone Pct., Boone Co., Nebr., Sheet 1B, p. 27. Geo. B. Kerr d. 29 March 1913. Nancy d. in 1943. They are both buried at the New Hope Cem., Monroe, Platte Co., Nebr.

Hoping I have been helpful or have pointed you in the right direction.

The Crane family moved from New Jersey to Illinois in the early 1830s or late 1920s. Most of the years were spent in Peoria County but in later years John purchased land in Stark County, I am seeking burial information. From census information it appears he died prior to 1880 though one article states it was in 1881. Louisa is later found again in Peoria County, where she may have died though the same article says she died in Fulton County. I believe they would be buried together though that may not be the case.

Is there anyone that does research at the Stark Co. IL courthouse? I have written a letter, with self-addressed stamped envelope for a repy, to the courthouse. I was asking about obtaining marriage and death certificates---and would like to know the cost of this. No reply has come from the courthouse.

I am seeking the death certificate for Effie E. Williamson Kopp. She died in 1957---and I have no specific day or month. I also want to obtain the marriage of Sarah Blanche Harmon to Alfred Kopp (abt. 1900 to 1902)---and of Effie E. Williamson to Alfred Kopp (abt. 1935-1936)

And, is there any kind of death register for persons dying in 1906?

Thanks for any assistance in this.
Shari in SC

His father was Nathan, from Windsor Co. CT.
Re: Sarah Thornton Harmon

More Info on the Thorntons:

John Thornton was William "John" Thornton.
His wife was Mary Elizabeth Gelder, d/o John Gelder and Elizabeth Shearburn. Cemetery photos can be found in Gelder Cemetery, Macoupin Co. IL. Find by doing search for: MAGA rootsweb. This brings up several links, with Morgan County being the first one. Click that. Then click link in middle of page for Macoupin and Sangamon Co. IL. Go to left column and scroll down to Cemetery index. Also, the Gelders have nice bios at the biography link.

This puzzle has been solved:
Mary Elizabeth Gelder Thornton took 3 daughters back to ENG around 1846. They were Sarah (my gr-grandmother born on 15 April 1837 in ENG), Eleanor, and Mary Elizabeth (b. 1844 in IL). John Thornton and Elizabeth came to America when John Gelder came over in 1831--or shortly after. John appears in 1840 census--as does John GUILDEN. This was John Gelder. The Thorntons made several passages to homeland. John Gelder's son came to America one year before his father in 1830. Several family members came over at this time. Mary Elizabeth Gelder Thornton appears as Mary Thornton on the passenger list of "Prince", for Aug 28, 1848, Port of New Orleans. Mary shows as age 33, but was actually 33. Sarah shows as age 10, and Eleanor as age 8. Little Mary does not show. This info matches what my late mother has written in her Bible page. Mom wrote they came over in 1848. Mom likely thought the whole family came over at that time. Eleanor was actually born in IL and not ENG. Wiliam "John" Thornton and Mary Elizabeth Gelder Thornton also had a first daughter named Mary. This Mary died in 1839 at the age of 9 yrs. 8 months, and 27 days. They named Mary Elizabeth Thornton (b. 1844) after deceased Mary. This was a common custom to name same sex child after a deceased child. Mary and her mother were buried right by each other---and the stone shows Mary as d/o J. and E. Thornton---then Elizabeth as the w/o W. Thornton. John was "overseer" on the Gelder farm. My mother's history of John just says he took care of his father-in-law's farm. She did not know her gr-gr-grandparents name. Mom and her siblings talked often about the Thorntons and homeland of ENG. Sarah Thornton was definitely born in 1837 in Yorkshire (not Liverpool) ENG.

I am looking for information on Felix G. Orr, who lived in Stark county from the mid 1860s to sometime in the 1870s.His wife,Margrett Jenkins, died there on February 22,1864 and in buried in Toulon. He had 4 children, Charles Wallace, Mary Nancy, William A, and Emma. I find a second marriage for him to Sarah Lyle in Henry county on December 1, 1867, but she doesn't show up in the 1870 census for Stark County. Any information on either wife would be appreciated. The family moved on to Iowa in the late 1870s. Charles Wallace enlisted in the Union army from Toulon, serving in the 151 Illinois Infantry as a drummer boy. Felix is shown as practicing medicine in Ross County Ohio in 1860, but is listed as a farmer in 1870 in Stark County. The family lived in Goshen.

I would like to know the cost of acquiring death certificates from Stark Co. Courthouse. I am looking for Effie E. Williamson Kopp, died in 1957 in Bradford (Bradford Cemetery)--and Sarah Thornton Williamson Harmon, d. 1906 (Smith Cemetery). I do not have exact dates. Were there death certificates for 1906?

Sarah was my gr-grandmother and Effie was my Aunt. She m. Alfred Kopp (who was first m. to Sarah Blanche Harmon). Sarah Thornton Williamson was the mother of Effie's father, William Albert Williamson. Sarah remarried John Harmon in 1878--and was the mother of Sarah Blanche Harmon.
Effie kinda married her half-uncle.

Thanks for info, Shari

Hi,
Yes, I did get the marriage license but there was no info about Charles Jesse's parents. I think the Charles and Caroline Jesse in Honey Creek in the 1860 census could very well be the parents of Charles Jesse b. 1838, but I can't prove it. They totally disappear after that census. I can't find a probate because I don't know where they died. They could have died without a probate. Another problem is that Charles Jesse b. 1838 is in the 1860 Essex Township, Stark County, Il. census as Jesson, a laborer for Calvin White, the grandfather of Charlotte Brewer, his future bride. I have been told that it was not unusual back then to be in two census. Charles parents could have had him included even though he wasn't there. I don't know where else to look for Charles Jesse, b. 1803.

Thank you very much for responding.

You probably have this info already but have you sent for a copy of the marriage of Charles Jesse to Charlotte M Brewer in Stark county Ill feb 26th of 1867 it is in volume 2 page 7.
Have you considered Charles and Caroline Jesse in Honey Creek Wisco in the 1860 census. They have a son listed Charles who would be only one year off in age and if the census was off just the right month it could be him.
Charles and Caroline and family are listed born in Prussia.
regards,
Here is the obit as it was published in the Star Courier newspaper on Monday, Jan 8, 1951, page 4:

MRS. CLARA HARMON

Bradford - Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Harmon, who died Saturday at the Hamm nursing home near Elmira, will be held at the Marsh and Dunlap funeral home, Bradford, at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Rev. Dak., and Mrs. Bert Frey, of Toulon.

-----------------

Not too much info. It doesn't mention her parents. Maybe you could check with the cemetery, funeral home or church for more info.
I'm looking for an obit for Clara Haines Rouse Harmon. She was b. 1864 in Lucas Co., IA and d. 7 Jan 1951 in Toulon, Stark Co., IL. Burial was in Snareville Cem. I'm hopeful this is the Clara Haines who is missing from our family tree. Parents are Jacob Haines and Mariah [Miller] Haines. Clara is the 9th of their 12 children.

According to a family tree found on this site, Clara m1 Francis Emory Rouse in 1882 in Stark Co., and m2 Thomas Wesley Harmon in 1902 in Stark Co. Based on an obit from another Haines family member, it is possible that Clara had a 3rd marriage to a man named Wright.

Thanks,
Sheila

Eliza Francis [Haines] Miller d. Jan 1946. Her obituary states, "She is survived by sister, Mrs. Cora Wright of Bradford, IL."

Who is Cora Wright?

Eliza Francis Haines' parents were Jacob B. and Mariah Haines. Eliza Francis was b. in Perry Co., OH in 1855 and d. in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA in 1946. She had 9 sisters, none of whom were named Cora, so it's possible "Cora" is a middle name or nickname. Marriage and/or death dates have not been located for four of the sisters:

Amanda Haines, b. 1857, m1 William J. Chase
Matilda Bertha Haines, b. 1859, m1 George W. Howell
Alice Lucinda Haines, b. 1861
Clara Etta Haines, b. 1864

A search of census records has not turned up a Cora Wright who might be one of the four Haines sister.

Can anyone help me identify Cora Wright of Bradford, IL?

Thanks,
Sheila

Here is the obit for David Haslett as it was published in the Star Courier newspaper on Thursday, Dec 20, 1928. The Illinois Death Index stated he died 12-20-1928 but the paper was published that day and it says he died the day before. Hard telling which one is right. You might try to get in touch with the cemetery and see what the tombstone says.

DAVID HASLETT

David Haslett of Osceola died yesterday at the Kewanee Public hospital, after an illness of about two months.
Mr. Haslett was born Aug. 26, 1855, at Cass county and moved with his parents to Kansas at the age of 12 where he resided until 1893, when he came to Stark county, and spent the remainder of his life in that vicinity.
In 1888, Feb. 16, he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Screeton.
Mr. Haslett is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Floyd Sturms and Mrs. Clarence Ford, both of Kewanee, and Alfred C. Haslett at home; one brother, James of Elkhart, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. T. O. Brannan of Mullen, Neb., also two grandchildren.
Mr. Haslett was a member of the Baptist church of Osceola.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon and 1:30 at the Osceola Baptist church, the Rev. Mr. Bayliss being in charge.
