Since it has been over 10 years since you posted your message, you may have already learned what you were looking for. Your grandmother, Carrie, had a brother, Thomas M., b. 28 Nov. 1886. While Carrie was raised by her grandparents, Hugh and Frances
Godfrey, young Thomas went to
Platte Co., Nebr. with his mother, Nancy E. Masters
Godfrey. Apparently, Nancy and
Willis were divorced. You can follow Thomas
Godfrey through the censuses, 1900 in
Monroe Twp., Monroe Village,
Platte Co., Nebr., Sht. 1B, p. 141; 1910 in
Walworth,
Walworth Twp., Wisconsin, Sht. 2B, p. 228; 1920 in
Brooking Twp.,
Jackson Co., Missouri, Sht.4A, p. 270. Thomas married
Beda Anderson 29 Oct. 1910 in
Jackson Co., Mo. and they had one daughter, Dorothy I. Dorothy married Frank G. Perkins in
Jackson Co., Mo. 16 June 1936. Thomas died in Dec. of 1962, where I'm not sure. His widow,
Beda, d. Dec. of 1976, her last known residence in Independence,
Montgomery Co., Ks.
Your great grandfather,
Willis Lemming Godfrey, died in Jan. of 1897, a most heartbreaking event. This was posted in the
Columbus,
Platte Co., Nebr. newspaper:
"Columbus Journal, March 31, 1897
DIED
GODFREY--The body of W.L. Godfrey was found floating in the river, says the North Chillicothe (ill.), Herald. When the body was found there was no coat or hat thereon and the indications were that at the time he was drowned he was in his shirt sleeves. His coat was recovered at a saloon. On the evening of Jan. 9,
Godfrey entered the saloon with Thomas
Humphreys and called for the drinks. They took whiskey and after it had been disposed of,
Godfrey said he couldn't pay for it. In the little altercation which followed he took off his coat, threw it on the bar and walked out of the place. The presumption is that he walked out of the saloon, crossed the railroad tracks, went down to the docks and plunged into the river. In the coat was found a letter from his son Thomas, aged 10 years, and who is living at
Monroe, Nebr. In the letter the little fellow mentions the fact that he will be 10 years old on the following Saturday and requests his father to send him a present. The Chillicothe Bulletin of March 26 contains a half-column account of the matter."
Your great grandmother, Nancy E. Masters
Godfrey remarried in
Platte Co., Nebr. 6 May 1891 to George B. Kerr. You will find Nancy E. and George B. Kerr in the censuses: 1900,
Monroe Twp.,
Platte Co., Nebr. Sheet 3B & 4A, pp. 143 & 144; 1910 in
Boone Pct.,
Boone Co., Nebr., Sheet 1B, p. 27. Geo. B. Kerr d. 29 March 1913. Nancy d. in 1943. They are both buried at the New Hope Cem., Monroe,
Platte Co., Nebr.
