I believe my great-great grandmother Sophia Ruroede may have travelled with the Fritz Uchtmann family from Germany to New York to Blair, IL in 1874. Fritz Uchtmann witnessed her marriage, and they are all listed together on the ships manifest. There are baptisms that also link the two families. I am curious as to whether there was a family tie between the Ruroede and Uchtmann families as well.

We heard about a connection from an elderly distant relative who lived in Terre Haute, Indiana.
But that is all.

Where are you located?
And where were you able to find baptism records connecting the 2 names?

There are Ruroedes that live here locally.

Unfortunately I am no where near Randolph County, so my in person research is limited to every few years. I found the travel information linking the Uchtmann family and Sophia Ruroede on the ship's manifest records at my local library. The Randolph County Genealogical Society (an excellent group) has translations of the early church records for St Johnnes Lutheran Church in Bremen, IL; which is where I found the records showing Fritz Uchtmann as witness to the marriage of Sophia Ruroede and Herman Bockhorn, and Friedrich Uchtmann was the sponsor for their first son, Heinrich Bockhorn's baptism. After that time many of the Bockhorn records appear in the Lutheran Church records from Blair, IL. I am interested in learning more about the Uchtmann family's history, to assist in pinpointing the location in Germany where the Ruroede and Uchtmann families as well as the Bockhorn family came from. Please feel free to email me directly. Thanks,

hi, my name is dorothy lajuan bockhorn, i think sophia ruroede is also my gg,ma. i know they came from hannover, saxony, germany. trying to find out info about her parents. thought your research may go deeper than mine on the bockhorn side. my dad was kelsey bockhorn, his dad was elvin a. bockhorn and mother hulda knope bockhorn. trying to find info on huld knope also. it seems that is a flatline on her to because of their name being spelled different and such. thanks lajuan

Becareful as not all Ruroede's are Ruroede's but may be variations of other names. My ancestor's are all from Randolph County, but Immigrated to New Orleans and came up the Mississippi. I don't even know how they spell there name in Germany as it's spelled many ways on the ship records to the land records even in the same document.

The name eventually became Rury, but many times spelled Rurode, Ruroede, Rurverde, Rurade, Rurede, Ruhrede, Rurehde. They spoke German, so it was spelled phonetically when written, so try different spellings. I didn't find your Ruroede, but if you run across some that aren't your branch let me know they might be mine.
