William Mercer (1850) - Pulaski/Union Co. Leona/Lenora

I am interested in any connection to this Mercer line, marriage/death/obits of William F. Mercer (1850), m. Leona/Lenora unknown maiden or birth year. Both may have died between 1873-1880

The following are census findings, of William's parents Thomas Mercer & Minerva nee Allen 1850-1860 and 1870 census of William, age 19/20, in both Pulaski & Union Counties.

In the 1870 census I find two William Mercer's 6 miles a part, one living with a Lenora Baggs, b. abt. 1828, IL and the other with his sister Caroline/Charlotta nee Mercer Briley. I am pretty sure both Williams the same person and since notes of my cousin has William m. Leona, I presume Lenora is whom he married abt. 1871-1873.

First born George Allen Mercer, Sep 1873, IL, found in 1880 census, no parents. My presumption is both William and Leona/Lenora died after 1873, bef. 1880 in either Union or Polaski Counties.

1850 census

Name: Thomas M Mercer
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814
Birth Place: IL
Home in 1850: District 2, Johnson, IL

Household Members:
Thomas M Mercer 36
Minerva Mercer 37, b. abt. 1813, KY
Charlotte Mercer, dau., 17, b. abt. 1833, IL, marries Samuel Briley
Francis M Mercer, son, 11, b. abt. 1839, IL
Harriet Mercer, dau., 4, b. abt. 1846,
William Mercer, son, b. abt. Jan 1850

1860 census

Name: Thos M Mercer
Age in 1860: 45
Birth Year: abt 1815
Birthplace: IL
Home in 1860: Pulaski, IL
Post Office: Wetaug

Household Members:
Thos M Mercer 45
Manerva Mercer 50, b. abt. 1810, KY
Francis Mercer 20, b. abt. 1840, IL
Harriet Mercer 12, b.abt. 1858, IL
Wm Mercer 10, b. abt. 1850, IL
Melissa Allen 19, b. abt. 1841, IL – is related to Minerva Allen, most likely a niece.

1870 census

Name: William Mercer (possibly William F) census taken 17 Aug 1870
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Age in 1870: 19
Birthplace: Illinois
Home in 1870: Township 14 Range 1, Pulaski, Illinois
Post Office: Ullin

Household Members:

Lenora Baggs, 42, b. abt. 1828, IL
Malinda Baggs 20, b. abt. 1850
Henry Baggs 15, b. abt. 1855
Marshall Baggs 12, b. abt. 1858
Lizzie Frazier 12
William Mercer 19

Note: Dongola, Union Co., is 6 miles from Ullin, Pulaski Co. So it is possible both William Mercer’s are one in the same. As the census for the two locations were taken a month a part.

The Lenora above maybe Lenora Boren, who m. Jackson Beggs, 10 Apr 1842, Union Co.

Name: Samuel Briley - census taken 18 Jul 1870
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Age in 1870: 39
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1870: Dongola, Union, IL

Household Members:
Samuel Briley 39
Caroline Briley 37, b. abt. 1833, IL in 1880 is Charlotta B. Briley 47, in the 1880 census
Sarah M Briley 17
Manerva Mersir 60, b. abt. 1810, KY
William F Mersir 20, b. abt. 1850, IL
Henry Mersir 10, b. abt. 1860, IL

Notes: George A. Mercer in 1880, age 6 is the son of William & Lenora/Leona Mercer

Living Mercer-1944>Wayne Everette-1921>Ben Schrieber-1899>George Allen-1873>William F-1850>Thomas M.-1814>Richard H.???

http://drdocyoung.com/others/mercer-ringnell/mercer.htm

I appreciate any assistance,

D.R. As a result of an act of Legislature, dated November 3, 1843, the county of Pulaski was formed.

Orbin was killed March 16, 1930. The news article about it ruled no foul play, so those involved were let off. I can send you the news article. Certian ones were to be held over for grand jury. I called the coronor there, but I don't think he's all that interested in going thru old files. I tried your e-mail but it came back. How far do you live from Mounds City,IL? I could send you the news article if I can get it thru on your e-mail

Phyllis

IL as IL didn't become a state till 1818, after becoming a territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The 1850 IL census is the only mention I've found of Miller. My best guess is they came from KY because that's where Augustus was born. If someone were to put a gun to my head & require me to guess, I'd guess Phebe was a dau or gdau.

POW/MIA Korean War Pulaski Co. MAXWELL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Pulaski County Illionis as his home of record.

Soldier: JAMES MAXWELL
Born: 1924 Caucasian
Date of loss: April 25, 1951 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 112 families in Illinois that have not been located. There is one family from Pulaski County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Here's a suggestion. Contact the Illinois Genealogical Society and work with them. They have microfilm records all over the state at the universitites....called IRAD (Illinois Regional Archive Directory I think). Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is where I request information on my family that lived in Union, Pulaski and Alexander Counties. Maybe, just maybe, they have summer programs for college students that would undertake the project, or know of an organization like a county group or state group that might undertake the project.

It's a suggestion....and I, too, would be willing to contribute to the costs. I live in Florida and cannot provide manpower.

Paul: sorry. got carried away and didn't finish (that happens to senior citizens...)
Since I can find no trace of "Miller" prior to 1850, I'm wondering if he's not "Milner" Echols, found earlier in Georgia. That might connect him to Benjamin Echols, also in Pulaski Co in 1850, and born in GA. Just a thot. Also updated the message subject, since you and Brian already helped me find Sarah - a year ago... Thx. Elizabeth

Paul: Never really thanked you for the great info on the Echols-Nickens relationship(s)! Really helpful in sorting out the children and grandchildren of these people. What I didn't follow up on is to ask you if you have any information on the antecedents of Miller Echols and Phoebe Ann Ellsworth. The first information I can find about them is the 1850 Census, where in Miller is 94yrs and Phoebe is 25yrs. Any help you can provide would be great! And, I owe you and Brian some information I didn't provide earlier: I undertook the family research as a favor to my sister-in-law Kathy, gr-dau of Harry Nickens. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Elizabeth,
No problem. It has been difficult connecting the dots here. Miller was born in IL and I have found copies of legal documents with the name Miller so I have to assume that is correct. There were so many children between the three brothers of Jesse, William, and John, I still believe he comes from one of them. I have not had an opportunity to research it as well as I hope to do when I retire some day. My direct e-mail is paulechols@yahoo.com if you need it.
--Paul

I see where my California cousin Brian Nickens has responded to you, and assume he has answered your questions. But just for fun, I thought I would add that Sarah Echols was the sister to my Great-Great-Grandfather August Echols born in 1844, died in 1919. Their parents were Miller and Phoebe Ann (Elsworth) Echols. Sarah was born and raised in Pulaski, County Illinois. I take care of the cemetery where August and my Great-Great Grandmother Louisa (Nicken) Echols are buried--New Hope Cemetery-Ullin, IL. Brian and I are double-cousins separated by four generations and a lot of miles (Both Sarah and August married a Nickens--Brother and sister--Huston and Louisa). One of August's sons was Alonzo 1869-1956 (my Great-Grandfather). One of his sons was H. E. Echols 1893-1925, my Grandfather and then my father Maurice August* John Echols 1924-1972 (*changed his middle name to John after WWII). For what that is worth--Paul Echols
