Trying to locate any info about my great-great grandmother Anna Zimmerman b. Ger. 1819. Married Conrad Baer in Monroe County in 1856. They had Sophia (mar. Andrew and Sophia (my connection) moved to neighboring Randolph County.

If anyone has info on the Zimmerman family, I would be most interested in hearing from you.
I wouldn't know about earlier, as it seems must people FIRST went to MONROE or ST.CLAIR CO. before they went anywhere else, but depending on the areas situation it's completely possible. I know BARKER came with some other folks from LINCOLN CO. MAINE around 1820 and settled and married in both of above named named counties. One of my CARR family women married a NELSON BARKER in around 1830 or 1840 and moved to JACKSON CO, in a town with a womens name. Some of them moved further south and east, and where in counties surrounding and containing CAVE-IN- ROCK where they owned ferries and where like in-land pirates. They would take people down the OHIO RIVER and down the FALLS. They would kill them and take there personal items they brought with them THIS WAS A HUGE PROBLEM AT THE TIME.
They would even drown they kids.
My best friends maiden name was BARKER and her father was
born in ALEXANDER CO. IL, 1920, at the southwest of the state. Later his father moved up to RICHLAND CO. IL, where he died around 1960's.
GOOD HUNTING!

I'm working on genealogy research my father started some years ago and am looking for documents that show:
James C. Perkins is son of Issac Perkins and Jane Barker;
Marriage record or some other document that shows Isaac and Jane were married;
Document that shows Jane Barker is daughter of Lewis Barker.

James C. Perkins, my gg grandfather, would have been 2-3 months old when Isaac Perkins was killed in 1832.

In the 1850 Tazewell County census, James C. Perkins (age 18) is listed in the Thomas & Sybil (Perkins) McKasson household, along with Jane Perkins (age 53.)

James married Mary J. McKaine (or McCain) in Tazewell. Their daughter, Harriet Jane "Hattie" was my gg grandmother.

I've found the Isaac Perkins probate records in 1832 & 1834, but they do not list family members (other than his bbrother Elisha filed them and was administrator).

Thanks for any help.

About 25 years ago I showed my great uncle born in 1895 who lived his entire life in Monroe County a pictorial history of the St. Louis area. There was a photo of a lynching. He paused and said something to the effect that "there used to be a lot of that." He also mentioned meeting a black man in Red Bud who claimed to have not eaten in three days. My great uncle said he would have given the man food if he'd arrived at the farm, but in town he didn't dare provide him food. The most he felt he could do was tell the man there were Black people who lived in Sparta, IL. I don't know when the incident occurred My best guess is during the Great Depression. The town of Red Bud is just over the Monroe County line in Randolph County, but has much Monroe County business. Perhaps these anecdotes might help shed some light on the situation.

Thank you for the information. I have read through that page, and it was interesting.

The reason I am interested in the history after 1890 is because that is the year, in the census, when the Black population throughout the county began declining dramatically, to only 3 in 1930. I don't quite know why that is. I have heard some theories, but was wondering if anyone else knew anything.

Please see http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilmcghs/black_history/blac...
for some possible starters. Wish you could extend your timeline back a bit. This was a French area with diverse population before other settlers, many of them Germans (Swiss, really) arrived. Slavery at one point was controversial, and there were slave holders in the area, though also liberationists and those who fought hard against slavery. I don't know much about it, though I believe that this was among areas where there was strong support for 'underground railroads' before the 1890 marker of your time consideration.

I am a student at the University of Illinois doing some research on African Americans in Monroe County. My project is particularly looking at how many towns and counties in Illinois have remained all white. I was wondering if anyone out there doing research in Monroe County has come across any interesting stories about African Americans in the county (or particular towns in the county) post-1890.

I found Peter Gerhardt b. 1832, wife Catherine, children Catherine, John, Charles, and Margaret on the 1860 Waterloo Census. I'd like to know if this Peter is related to George N. Gerhardt, first husband of Justina Kaemper. Peter b. 1832 was living next door to my great grandfather, Frederick Meyer (who later married the daughter of George N Gerhardt) on the same 1860 census on page 105, so I'm thinking chances are good. I'd appreciate any help. And thanks again to my 3rd cousin's wife who found my Gerhardt first cousin's photo at a garage sale!
From Combine History of Randolph, Monroe & Perry Cos
Year 1883

Page 79
The first American colony to settle within the territory
now comprised in the county, arrived in the year 1782, and
was composed of James Moore, Shadrach Bond, Robert
Kidd, Larken Rutherford and James Garretson. Their
wives and children accompanied them, and they came to
make a permanent settlement. Crossing the Allegheny
mountains, they floated down the Ohio to its mouth, and
then propelled their craft against the strong current of the
Mississippi till they reached Kaskaskia some time in the
autumn of the year 1781. From this place the country was
explored in different directions, and all of the party fixed
on locations now in Monroe county, as the most eligible
place for settlement. The French inhabitants had clung
close to two or three villages, and had made little progress
toward clearing the wilderness, or extending their settlements over any considerable territory. These Marylanders and
Virginians adopted a different policy. With the true Saxon
instinct of ownership of his own homestead and lordship
over his own acres, each immigrant selected a location where he would be likely to experience little trouble from neighbors and remain master of his own domain. The hill trace between the French villages of Kaskaskia and Cahokia and St. Louis passed near a beautiful spring, a high, healthy ground, to which the French had applied the name of Bellefonlaine. Here Moore, Garretson and Rutherford determined to make their settlement. The rich soil of the Mississippi bottom attracted the attention of other members of the colony, and there Kidd and Bond made their homes.
Kidd clung closest to the French villages, and settled at a
distance of but a few miles from Prairie du Rocher. Bond
chose a location farther north. These settlements were made in the spring of the year 1782.

Page 80
Robert Kidd had been one of the soldiers in George Roger Clark's expedition to Illinois in 1778, and had taken part in the capture of Fort Gage. He made a quiet and unpretentious citizen of the great commonwealth of which he was one of the founders, and died at his home in the American Bottom in the southern part of the county in 1849. Kidd lake, near the head of which he settled, hears his name.
Pg 417
AMERICAS SETTLEMENTS.
In this part of the country was made one of the first
American settlements in Illinois by Robert Kidd. He had
been a soldier under Colonel George Rogers Clark, and had
taken part in the capture of Kaskaskia. He returned to
Illinois in 1781, in company with four others, with the intention
of permanently settling in the country. His companions
chose locations near the present town of Waterloo,
and in the bottom in what is now Moredock precinct, while
Kidd settled in the bottom above Fort Chartres. His home
was under the bluff", at the head of Kidd lake. He died in 1849 at an age upwards of eighty years. The old house in
which he is said to have lived, is still standing on survey
939, His farm is a part of the estate of Jacob Fults. He
was a good citizen, quiet and domestic in his ways, and raised a family of children among whom were two sons, John and Samuel Kidd. Some of his descendants still reside in the country.

I am looking for any information you may have on James father, John and wife Winyford. Census states he was born in Tennessee. She was born in Georgia. Thanks for your time, I have hit my "brick wall" here.Jeanne

Because some of them were Sylvester Haynes children, and some of them were the children of his second wife, Davis, and two of them were probably the children of this second marriage, so there are younger children also names Haynes. If you are asking a general question, many women died young and the husbands remarried. Sometimes the second wife also had children. Families also took in nieces and nephews into their households because those childrens parents died. Life was very difficult in the 1850s and beyond.

Thank you for all the time and energy you put into this!! I will definitely contact the people you gave me.

I was in contact with an Nth degree relative, and she said that the story they always heard was that Christine lost her mind and ended up being institutionalized. So that may be why she is gone from any records.

And she also told me that Christine is the one who married Christoph Dietzel, not Charlotte, but I need to do some more checking on that, as we were always told it was Charlotte who got married again!!

Anyway, Thank you so much!
Val

Christine definitely lived at least until the time of the 1870 census enumeration, remaining at the same location and being recorded on the farm census in 1870.

I have given you the link to Monroe County volunteers and I hope you contact them. Looking at the amount of vital statistics records they have, I believe they will be able to determine when Christine died and perhaps where she is buried.

I also gave you information on who to contact for a copy of the will / estate of a Carl KAHRE who died in 1857. This is most likely Christine's husband, listed as Charles in the 1850 Monroe County census. Request a copy of his estate, and you will most likely receive names of his next-of-kin and be able to determine whether this is indeed "your" Carl KAHRE.

These volunteers and / or historical / genealogy societies will be able to help you solve some of the loose ends in your family.

If all else fails, ask them how you can access microfilmed old newspapers from the time and location where Christine lived in the 1870 census. You can probably send for these microfilms through interlibrary loan, ordered by your local librarian, and read through them at your library. Most state libraries or state historical societies have these newspapers available to loan for a very small shipping fee.

I know you live in a small town in SD, so you may need to travel to perhaps Yankton or Pierre to go to a Mormon / LDS family history center. I have used our local one, and they were very helpful in sending for vital record microfilms for me to search through in their History Center. They charge a small amount, I think about $2.50 per reel.

I didn't find any mention of Carl or Christine in the many online newspaper archives.

Beth
not related

This is what I have found so far. I think you will need to find lookup volunteers to rule in or rule out some of the information.

1850 IL Monroe Co. Township 3 Range 10

KAHRE Christina – 58 Prussia
--- Margaret 16 – IL
--- Henry 24 – IL
--- Margaret – 18 IL
--- Maria -- 3/12 months – IL

Next door:

KAHRE Charles 30 – IL
--- Ida 24 – Saxony
--- Mina 6 – IL

1880 : I don’t find Christina / Christine living on her own or with family members. Have you checked all married daughters in 1880 for their mother living with them?

The following appears to be death information for Christine Wilhelmine Erftmeier’s husband. You have two names and birth dates for him.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Wartburg, Monroe Co., IL
1840 – 1970 Database from microfilm
Records from 1855-1866 are missing.
This church is still active, located near Waterloo, Monroe Co., IL

KAHRE, Carl Heinrich Wilhelm, Sr. 7 Sep 1805 Lehrbeck near Minden <1866 Monroe County, IL Unk Germany? Unk Unknown ERFTMEIER, Christine Wilhelmine Unk B(kids) -

If you contact this cemetery, they might be able to check the old sexton records to see who paid for the initial burial and for the upkeep on the tombstone. I discovered a ‘new’ family member in this way for one of my own ancestors.

Here is an interesting obituary for a Mrs. Charlotte KAHRE. It states her maiden name was Noelting and married a William Arftmeier! I found this on the volunteer-run Cass County, Nebraska genweb site:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~necass/index.html#selectio...

Dr. Gilmore's Files.
OBITUARY OF MRS. CHARLOTTE KAHRE

Born October 5, 1847, in Germany. Died at 11:23 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 1906, at her home in Union, Neb. Deceased was the wife of Charles Kahre, and they had resided in this vicinity since last February. Her health began failing eight months ago, and soon afterward it became evident that her ailment was cancer of the stomach. Although she was aware that the disease had gotten beyond control of medical skill, she was a patient sufferer and calmly awaited the summons, and when it came it found her prepared to meet her Maker. The remains were taken to Omaha on the Monday evening train, funeral services being held in that city Tuesday.
Deceased had limited acquaintance in this neighborhood, owing to the fact that since they moved here she has been confined to the house most of the time, but those who knew her speak in praise of her kind and benevolent disposition and model life while among them. Her maiden name was Charlotte Noelting, and after the death of her mother in Germany her father brought her to this country in 1861 and settled in Monroe county, Ill., where she was married to William Arftmeir, whose death occurred in that county. Of this union there are two surviving children, Charles Arftmeir and Mrs. Tena Grant, both residing in Omaha. Her second marriage was to Charles Kahre, on Dec. 17, 1875, in Illinois. In 1886 they located in Omaha, coming to this neighborhood last February. They were parents of three children, Mrs. Lizzie Shill of Springfield, Mo, Edward Kahre of Omaha, and William Kahre who was at home with his parents near here

This family with all their names is SO confusing!!

Monroe County Genealogical Society
P.O.
Did Christine KAHRE's daughter "Mina" marry Chris MANDELKOW? or a VAUDT?

The Monroe County, IL, volunteer-run genweb site includes much information for you to sift through. For example:

http://monroe.ilgenweb.net/churches/holycross_kl.htm

Here is the home page for Monroe Co. genweb:

http://monroe.ilgenweb.net/

No wonder why I'm confused!

I don't find more information on your family tree which would help me keep the two women separate while I am searching.

Can you please list the two women, separately, with birth year, names of husbands, names and birth dates and places of children? For example: 1850 Monroe Co. IL KAHRE Christine, 38, Prussia. Husband Carl, 34, Prussia, (then list each child, birth year or age. If you list them that way, esp. so I can compare two records like the 1850 census, I will then see whether I can trace Christine Wilhelmine Louisa.

We are trying to locate Christine the "elder" It is very confusing, as both sisters were named Christine.
The Christine that is listed on the marriage certificate to Christoph Dietzel was CHRISTINE WILHLEMINE CHARLOTTE she always went by the name Charlotte. She is my great great paternal grandmother and died here in Wolsey, S.D.
Her son Karl Henry Johann is my great grandfather, also buried here in Wolsey.

The other one is CHRISTINE WILHELMINE LOUISA and she went by Christine. She is the one we are looking for. She is my great great maternal grandmother. Her daughter Caroline is my great grandmother (married Karl Henry) and is buried here in Wolsey.

They were Ertmeier sisters, who married Kahre brothers.
That last census that you gave is the very last time Christine shows up anywhere that we can find!!!

Christine Wilhelmine Louisa had many children, and I have located 2 decendents of two other daughters and they are also looking...no luck!!

Thanks

You asked me via Ancestry messenger to do a little more researching on Christine and reply on this post.

Do I understand correctly:

Christine born 1812 in Germany. Married Carl Kahre in 1836, emigrated to IL. Carl died and you don't find Christine in later records. (OR is it the daughter Christine you are trying to trace?)

Christine married Christoph DIETZEL, I discovered he died in 1869, and she then took back her married name, moving to Iowa.

Is it the daughter Christine who married Christoph DIETZEL? And you want to trace her?

You also stated "she is listed in 1850 with her children", and a man named "Charles Kahre". You ask whether she might have married this man; do you have a death date for "Carl" earlier than 1850?

Unless you have a widely different birth date for "Carl" KAHRE, I assumed immediately that the "Charles" is the same man, Christine's husband, just with an Americanized name. MANY people did that.

Later records for the elder Christine are found:

In 1850 Monroe County, IL, her name is given as Christina KAHRA, b 1812. Children Christina 14, Charles 11, Louisa 9, Wilhelminia 7, Henry 6 and Caroline 1.

1860 Monroe County, IL:
KAHRE, Chstine [sic] age 48, born Prussia
--- Chas, 21, Prussia
--- Louise, 19, Prussia
--- Mina, 17, Prussia
--- Carl, (female), 11, IL
--- Mary, 6, IL

-----------------------

Can you clarify which Christine married Christoph DIETZEL?

Is it the daughter Christine you are trying to trace? What do you know about her? What records have you found?

I am looking for information on the following people:
Christine Wilhelmine Erfmeier "Erftmeier" (August 20-1812) was married to Carl Friedrich Gottlieb Kahre (December 28-1805 on June 12, 1836 in Germany.
They had several children -- Christine Louise Margrethe (1837) Christine Luise Henriette (1841) Charlotte Wilhelmine Kahre (1843) Carl Heinrich Fredrich (1849) and Caroline (1849) we know there are some other children too including Minne (who married a Vaudt)
in the 1870 Monroe Illinois census she is listed with just the children. Any information on what happened to her after that would be appreciated. We cannot find any more information on her. Caroline is my great-grandmother and Christine would be my great-great-grandmother. We think she left Illinois and moved to Iowa but we are not sure, and cannot seem to find any more information. Thank you!
I have already contacted the Monroe County Clerk and he sent me a copy of their marriage certificate. On that certificate it says: "I Charles L Kleppisch and minister of the Gospel herby certify that one the 31st day of January, 1869 did join in marriage, Cristoph Dietzel and Mrs. Christine Wilhelmine Charlotte Kahre. It was filed on the 24th of February 1869.

My great great grandmother is this lady. She went by Charlotte as her sister was also name Christine.

The Illinois State Archives Marriage Index has a different date for the marriage, and a different first name for Christine:

http://www.ilsos.gov/isavital/marriageSearch.do

That is the only entry for Christoph found in the online Illinois State Archives using the exact spelling of Christoph DIETZEL.

You will find other family information in their database:

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/datab...

There are two marriages for a Charles DIETZEL.

Nothing found for a Louisa or Louise.

No death entries found.

Beth
not related
