Wm. Christ b. 1884, Ohio > Columbus > Normal, Illinois > Chicago Railroader

I am seeking information on William Christ, b. 8 July 1884 to Charles Christ and Frances Philamena “Minnie” Schmelzer in Ohio. By 1879 (maybe earlier) the family was in Columbus, Ohio. Older siblings include Charles Christ Jr., Paul, Catherine or “Kate.” Younger siblings include Joseph, Frank and John Anthony. This is a railroad family.

In the 1920 census, William is living at Normal, McLean, Illinois employed as a pipe fitter. He is married to Anna, 38 born in Illinois and they have five children, William H., 18; George, 17, Harold 15; Ralph 11 and Jeanette 8. The two oldest boys are also employed at the railroad shop.

I have a 1926 letter that suggests that William is in Danville, Illinois, and a 1948 obituary for his brother Paul R. Christ at Bloomington, Illinois that places him at Chicago. I believe he died in Chicago May 1971 though I do not yet have a copy of the death certificate. Does this sound like your family?
POW/MIA Korean War Mclean Co. DUKE

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Mclean County, Illinois as his home of record.

Soldier: JAMES DANIEL DUKE
Born: 1923 Black
Date of loss: November 28, 1923 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 112 families in Illinois that have not been located. There is one family from Mclean County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
-Dr, Matthew Faloon of Bloomington, IL. He died in Chicago, Illinois.
He was a doctor and an inventor. Matthew was born 20 MAY 1822 in Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA. He married Mary EARLY on 11 JUNE 1840 in Bucyrus, OH. She died after they moved to McLean Co., IL and I need death information for Mary.

then Dr. Matthew Faloon married SARAH FELL (daughter of Joshua Fell) on 3, 1, 1862 and they had one daughter Emma Faloon
born June 1865. I think he perhaps he was divorced from Sarah. Sarah died 10/24/1884 and I need
Sarah (FELL) FALOON OBITUARY also.

Matthew was living in Chicago, Cook Co., IL when he died
03/07/1898 and I don't have his obit or his daughters. His occupation was a physician. In the 1900
census, Emma Faloon was a music teacher who lived in Chicago, IL as a lodger on Park Ave. I do
have the census for all of them.

The History of McLean County, Illinois' published
1879,by Wm. FALOON, M.D., Bloomington Another of the old
settlers and physicians of Bloomington is Dr. M.
Faloon, who is a native of Carlisle, Cumberland Co.,
Penn.; he attended and became a graduate of the
Eclectic Medical College, of Cinncinnati; he also
became a graduate in allopathy in Philadelphia; also
has certificate of attendance of a full course of the
Eurescopian system; he is a thorough botanist,
frequently having herbs sent to him from the
laboratories of different colleges, for the purpose of
learning their medical qualities; he is also the
propounder of different medicines now before the
public, prominent among which is Dr Faloon's Tonic,
Dr. Faloon's Instant Relief and many other well-known
remedies. The Doctor has been in constant practice for
twenty-six years, and has been practicing in
Bloomington for the past nineteen years; he has many
friends who can vouch for his abiity and skill as a physician.'

thanks

Stephen Merrill, photographer of Lexington, IL

I am searching for information regarding Stephen Merrill, particularly any collection of his photographs or papers that remain in the family or in an official repository. I have researched him at the Lexington, Illinois Historical Society (The Fort), and there I did find obituaries for him and his wife, Rachel Rebecca Rohrbough Merrill.

Stephen Merrill was born 7 Dec 1829 in Hagerstown, MD and died 24 July 1919 in Lexington, Illinois, where he is buried in the Lexington Cemetery. He was a Civil War chaplain (according to obituaries and a website, http://family.phelpsinc.com/branches/claggett, which states his regiment as 2nd Maryland, but does not indicate US or CS; he allegedly took photographs while in Virginia during the war, and knew the Claggetts of Fauquier County). Merrill was a Methodist Episcopal minister and photographer, and he ran a gallery in Lexington, IL for around 50 years.

Rachel Rebecca Rohrbough was born in 1838 in Buchanan, WV and died in 1922 in Lexington. She married Stephen Merrill on 2 Aug 1860 in Grafton, WV.

They had two sons:
Swayze Brister Lee Merrill (born 1860/61 in MD)
William Bertram Merrill (b. 1870/71 in IL)
Both sons preceded parents in death, according to parents' obituaries.

One grandson, William Bertram "Billie" Merrill, is listed as living in Fort Wayne, Indiana in Stephen Merrill's 1919 obituary. I have also sent a query to the Allen County board, but I would appreciate any information regarding the family, its descendants, and papers in Illinois. He may have taken war photographs and other photographs in Virginia and Maryland that would be of great use to my research.

I am searching for information on the wife of John Morris Conant, born in 1849 in McLean County, Illinois. Her name, according to the census was Molly/Mollie. She died shortly after their daughter, Lucy, was born and this is all that I know about her. Can anyone out there give me her maiden name? She died around 1870/1871, because in the census taken before her death, she is listed with her husband and the census taken after her death lists their daughter as 9 years old. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Anna Davis
adavis@okhistory.org

I'm looking for info on the Kimlers and particularly the Love family of LeRoy. The Loves seemed to have not left much of a trace before moving on to Iowa in the late 1800's. My ancestor James Love is burried in Oak Grove Cemetery. He had a son John, who married Elizabeth Kimler and moved to Iowa. I'm trying to find out where in Ohio the Love's lived before settling in McLean County around 1840-ish.

I am the great granddaughter of Leander J. Cohee. I recently became aware of a family bible and a farm Day Book containing the surname Cohee that was found in the hay loft of an old barn in the Havana, Mason Co., IL area by a man in Peoria, IL. Upon contacting him, I learned the bible had been sent to a woman in Stanford, IL a few years back. He couldn't recall her name or an address for the woman. The Day Book was sent to his cousin in Arkansas and she was kind enough to send it to me. I know this is a long shot but I am trying to locate where the bible went. If anyone has any information on what became of this bible or who the woman that received it was I would greatly appreciated.

I found info about George Perry's second wife's death in a Clinton paper in 1874. Any help out there? Do not have exact death date of George Perry Brittin either. Just know when he disappeared off census records. He lived on his farm many years after his wife died and then on census with his daughter in 1900. Is there any newspaper clippings?

There are many Walden families in McLean/DeWitt area, including William and Jane Starr Walden (1806-1872 and 1805-1889) who named one child Elijah and one son Morris. They are on 1850 census in DeWitt county. Wonder if this is any relation? There is also an Elijah on census born 1700's.

Any help appreciated.

Is this cemetery well maintained, ie. not missing many tombstones, etc? Can't find my GGrandparents, Taylor Hall and Hannah O'Neal Hall in the cemetery transcription books, but am 99% certain they are buried there. Hannah passed away between 1900-1910 and Taylor between 1910-1920. Their daughters, Bunny, Josephine (Hall) Cole, Kate (Hall) Nelson are there, as well as Taylor's brother Calvin Hall and his wife Rachel. Any idea why they wouldn't be in the transcription book? Thanks.
Kelly Hall

I am searching for the death certificate for my great grandfather. His name was Henry Young, I don't know what county he died in or the year. I found him listed in the 1930 Census living in Bureau County, Illinois so obviously he died after 1930. The problem I am having is that there are about 40 Henry Youngs who died in Illinois in the time period that I am serching. I have already sent for 4 death certificates from various counties and all have been the wrong Henry Young, this has cost me almost $65. My next step has been to call the remaining counties to verify his parents names on the death record before I order it. Most county clerks are very nice and willing to look at the certificate, but when I called Mclean County I was told they would NOT even look at the certificate until I paid. I just don't want to spend another $14 until I know for sure that this is the death record I am searching for. I was wondering if there was someone in Mclean county who could possibly check the newspaper archives to see if there is an obituary listed for this Henry Young who died in Mclean County? Here is the information I have:

Henry Young
d. July 7, 1950 in Mclean County

The parents names for my Henry Young should be Mason Young and Isabel McFeely. My Henry was born December 1876 in Bureau County, Illinois. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He married Peggy Outlaw on Sept. 9, 19961, in Wapella. She survives.

Ards for his achievements, it was the high regard and respect given to him by his employees and co-workers that meant the most to him.

It is this type of behavior that his family has always known and loved him for. Although he may have been short in stature, to his family he was 10 feet tall.

It was his family that always came first and it is the strength of the bonds of family that will continue to be his legacy.

Hello,

I am looking for information on the following two families from the 1850 McLean Co. Census for MacKanaw:

Nathan Reed: b. 1793, NY
Marrida? Reed: b. 1807 Vermont
Olive?: b. 1834 Ohio
Ruth A
Hearrell?: female, can't read this
Nathan
Polly
Marrida?

They are living in the house next to :
Sally Orr: b. 1824 New York
Elizabeth A. Orr: b. 1846 IL
Sally Orr: b. 1849 IL
Charles Reed: b. 1832 Ohio

I believe the Elizabeth A. Albert Anderson married Mary "Mollie" Tanner between 1880-1895, possibly around Williamson Co., IL.

If anyone has any information on these families, I would greatly appreciate it.
