Greetings, I grew up in Blue Mound Township. I was familiar with an Arthur and Rosie Beier, grandparents of a good friend of mine. They are buried in Blue Mound Cemetery along with many other Beiers. Check it out at findagrave: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=10...;

Happy hunting.

Jill

I am looking for any personal information regarding the family of John Chris Vockrodt. He was born 1815 in Baden, Germany, came to United States Nov.13, 1833 (night of the great Fall of Meteors). He married Mary Jane Deal 1844 in Virginia. He had the following children John H., Ella, William L, Eleanor, Ellen, Walter, Susie and Charles. I am told he arrived in Maryland, then went to Waynesboro, Virginia then came to McLean County Illinois. I found his tombstone in West Twin Grove Cemetary, McLean County, Illinois. I do understand that he was the Justice of the Peace for Danvers Illinois. Thanks for any information you might have.

I was researching this family as well for a friend. So far I have found the following:

Henry Beier born 1803-1806 in Prussia, married Wilhelmina "Minnie", born in Switzerland. One child died in Germany before the family immigrated to the United States in 1857. They had four other children:

1. John Theodore Beier - born March 25, 1839 in Prussia. Married Mary S. Swain of Bavaria in 1868. They had five children, all of East Bend, Champlain, Illinois - Laura, Ida, Amelia, George and Mary.

2. Frederick Beier - later moved to Chenoa, Illinois

3. Charles Beier - born 1848 in Prussia, married Minnie White (born 1850) on July 3, 1869 in McLean County, Illinois. Had four children: Albert (1870); Sarah (1873); Herman (1875) and Ida (1876).

4. Augustus Beier - born April 1850 in Prussia, married Fredericka Krouse (born 1852 Prussia) on August 13, 1870 in McLean County. They had six children: Louise Elizabeth Beier, born Dec 1873; William C., May 1875; Minnie, August 1880; Josie, March 1883; Arthur J, July 1885 and Gussie, April 1891.

Louise Elizabeth "Lizzie" Beier married Henry Sutter in 1892. They had eight children in McLean County. My friend is a descendant of this family.

1923 envelope to Arrowsmith from Esens, Ost Friesland, Germany

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope to Mrs John George OTTEN living near Mrs John OMMEN in Arrowsmith, McLean County that was sent from Esens, Ost Friesland, Germany in 1923. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on OMMEN, select the one with Arrowsmith, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below.

There is a Theda (Mrs John) OMMEN in the 1910 and 1920 US censuses of Martin, Illinois, but I am uncertain if I have found Mrs John OTTEN. There is a Theda (Mrs John) OTTEN, from Germany, who emigrated in 1923, in the 1930 US census, Illinois, Woodford County, Roanoke ED 102-26, p. 2B (written). I wondered if someone more familiar with the area could check for other possibilities. I believe that Esens, Ost Friesland may be Theda OMMEN's and Theda OTTEN's birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website. This envelope was sent during a period of hyper-inflation in Germany.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

Sorry, I struck out.
---I did find the Civil War enlistment of an Austin Montgomery in 1864 in Kewanee (Henry Co.) IL.

---Also found an Austin Montgomery enumerated in the 1840 St. Clair Co. IL census.

---Found his McLean County marriage to Rachel in the IL State Archive Marriage database but not his marriage to Nancy W. Turner.

---Did not find a will or probate file for Austin in the McLean Co. index at the IL State Archive site

Thanks - Ancestry actually has her indexed as "Rachael" instead of Rachel in the 1870 census. I figured that the surname might be mangled so I was searching by "Rachel" and that managed to get mangled also. Ancestry's index is correct as "Rachael Montgomy" because this is how the census enumerator recorded the names but I have had issues with Ancestry's indexing errors many times. Due to all their errors, when I abstract or transcribe a census entry, I also note what Ancestry's index entry is for that household so it can be easily located again.

Does anyone know what became of the papers of Bloomington lawyer Horatio Bent? (I think he died in Bloomington in 1931.) I understand Bent did a lot of genealogical research in connection with his work that sometimes ran into volumes...

I'll try that...I'm waiting to hear from historical society, too. I've since figured out that his son (also Horatio, but with a C mid initial) was in Bloomington at least until 1949, and the son's widow, Daisy, died in 1969. (That's within recent memory as far as I'm concerned, but then I'm getting up there.) No children that I've found, so I'm hoping family papaers were left to an organization.

Mary Ann Porter

I'm looking for any information that I can find on Mary Ann Porter. She married James Zimmerman in McLean County in 1837. On the 1850 Census, in McLean County, her birthplace is listed as Iowa. On the 1860, it's Georgia, and on 1870 (they had moved to KS), it's Illinois.

I've looked for Porters in and around McLean County, in 1830, and found a few that might be her family, but since those census records just give the ages, I can't make a positive link.

She died in 1876, probably in KS. I'd love to find out who her parents were, and where she was born.

Thanks

Thanks, I had found those census records. I had made a note about James Porter, on the 1850 Census. I hadn't seen the church record. That makes me think that he really might be her brother. I think I might have found him on the 1840 Census, in Morgan County. Another person of interest is Robert Porter. He might be her father. He is in McLean in 1850, and possibly in Morgan County in 1840. I was kind of losing steam, but seeing them on the Church record will keep me moving. Thanks again.

I see that you have no dates for Leroy S. Barstow. I can tell you that he remarried and moved to Rice County, Kansas. He is buried in the Bean Cemetery near Little River.

Barstow's second wife was my ancestor Lydia Ann VanSchoyck Fuller. Her first husband, Isaac Fuller, is supposedly also buried in Old Oak Grove. I'm planning a trip there to see if I can find his grave. Can anyone tell me if there is still a stone and Civil War marker for him?

Thanks.

I don't have info you're looking for. But in 1940s trapese acts practiced at Bloomington YMCA, also in a barn nearby, maybe Gene Cawood was name of that owner. There was a couple, Fred and ? Mott who were circus people from that same time period. Hope this gives you some clues to follow. Good luck.
