John Sargent Broughton, s/o Ebenezer and Lois (Sargent), married Sophia Evans. He is a brother to Anson C. Broughton.

Anson was born in VT about 1804 and moved through NY and Ohio before arriving in McHenry Co., Illinois about 1850. I am connected to the family through Anson and Phoebe Broughton’s daughter Sarah who married James Thompson, son of James Crombie and Mahitable (Gould) Thompson.

According to the notes I have on John and Sophia, they had a son Horace Parley (b. abt 1845). He served in Company D, 137th Inf. Reg., IL; resided in Quincy, IL in 1864; married Rosella Edith Russell about 1879. The information on this family is not my own research and I cannot vouch for its accuracy.

According to his 1870 census from Ypsilanti, Washtanaw County, Michigan, it looks like he became a citizen.

Assuming this information is correct, he was most likely naturalized either in Washtanaw County or Wayne County, Michigan. I'm not familiar with the naturalization records from this time period for that location, but it is possible you may find immigration information with his naturalization records. It's worth investigating, anyway.

Kristen Smith
McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society

the 1900 census shows Tillie Schuring, Age: 14 Birth Date: Mar 1886, living in Grafton Townshp, McHenry County, illinois. She was a servant to the "Ewart" Family. Tillie married August Koppen in July, 1902. He had a brother Alfred, "Fred". It appears that these familioes all knew each other. Look at the 1900 census and you will see the lines follow--Ewart, John; Schuring, Tillie; Koppen, August.

I hope this helps.
You can contact me at my email address off-site if you wish.

When I began my research I knew the names of my Grandparents and a bit of their history that I learned from my parents. My maternal and paternal Grandparents died when I was just a little one so I never really knew them.

When I began my research I only knew that my Father was of Norwegian descent and my Mother was Irish and German. No one knew where in Norway or Ireland and the family Bible said my Grandmother's parents were from Spartan, Germany (there is no Spartan, Germany!)

I began my research by collecting all the records I could get my hands on about my Grandparents--census records, birth records, death records, land records, and church records and these records lead me eventually to my Great Grandparents. If you have living aunts and uncles, interview them to see what new information can be gleened. I trace entire families because I always am able to develop further information that may be found on documents of a sibling that helps the entire effort.

I still have not been able to get my Irish line traced any further than my Great Grandparents. I know where they came from in Ireland but that's about it. But, this took years to develop!

Are you a member of Ancestry.com?

Kathy
My Grandfather Owen Madden did not have a brother named Oscar (at least that I know of). He had a brother named Thomas Jr., James, John and a sister named Catherine (Kate). Owen was born in Harvard, Illinois in 1866, son of Thomas Madden Sr. and Mary Ann Farnan. Thomas and Mary Ann and their children moved to Iowa in 1876 and settled near Elma, Iowa. Owen married Margaret Ann Beaumaster in Iowa in 1893 and them moved to Stutsman County, ND in 1900.

Does this help?

Kathy

Owen's daughter Margaret is my mother. The email thread below says Margaret Ann Madden but her name is actually Margaret Alice Madden. She was born in North Dakota in 1912.
Help locating grave - Lumen Bartholomew, d. 18 Oct 1843 near Coral (Twp) McHenry Co, IL

Looking for the grave/headstone for Lumen Bartholomew.
b. 27 Oct 1785 in Connecticut
d. 18 Oct 1843 McHenry Co, IL
No idea what cemetery but the family was in Coral (Twp?) about that time. His widow Lydia married Henry White of Mc Henry County.

Because it is such an early death there is no death record or certificate to get the cemetery info from. The family came to McHenry Co in 1842 and was there until about 1850 when a son Michael D. Bartholomew sold land moved to Indiana and then came back to Douglas County, IL.

The land is described as the East 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 35 and the East 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Section No. 26 in the Township No. 46, North of Range 8, East of the 3rd principal meridian. Wondering if the land description can help locate a possible cemetery.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Deborah Slager
Polo, IL

There are no death records (or births) before 1877. There are no exceptions to this rule. A check of the Woodstock papers didn't show any obits for Joel Butts. You can pretty well determine he died between 1857 and 1860 as there is a 2 year old in the household. That is assuming the child is his.

Nothing was found in a search of the area cemeteries. And, oddly, there was nothing found in probate for him. While he may not have had probate opened for his, he did have minor children and typically there should have been a legal guardian for them. Did the family move from McHenry County? Perhaps guardianship was granted in another county.

Hi Laurie:

I COMPLETELY understand the frustration you must be feeling after 20 years of research with big blank spots screaming at you from your family history. I too have experienced such angst over a few of my own ancestors missing data.

In this case I was trying to help someone with their search, but as you can see I never got very far. I have an extensive list of Butts ancestors so keep an eye on the boards.

I suppose it's possible the gentleman might have passed away elsewhere while visiting - it happens . . . There are so many little facts that are difficult to find in some instances unless you live in the area and can scan old newspaper files that might lead to another "clue".

What EXACTLY do you know, and have you some idea or suspect some other possibility no yet put to paper?

Leslie (AZ)

Correction: Samuel E. Hollister's connection to Kinner in question. It has been pointed out to me that the transcription of the Thompson Co, NY Probate I used to establish the relationship was probably in error. "Samuel of Walworth Co." is most likely a misreading of "Lemuel of Walworth Co."

Lemuel is well documented as a son of Kinner and his name would be missing from the will if the transcription were accurate.

Lineage of Samuel remains unknown.

Was Bridget born in 1852? I believe a bridget Hallisay from dunham may have appeared in my relatives home during the 1880 census. The Sweeney Merchant was there with his daughter, many of the O'Brien's and yet Bridget Hallisay. She was much the mystery woman in the home. If she was born in 1852, can you tell me about her? Thanks!

Schuyler Pierson is my 2nd great grandfather and his father Albert Pierson my 3rd GG.

Albert Pierson was born in Ithaca, NY on 7/1/1813 and died 9/19/1860 in Chicago, according to Anonymous on this Board.

My own research shows that Albert's parents were Jubal Pierson and Martha Duryea Pierson, who lived in the Ithaca, New York area. This line goes back to Henry Pierson who came to the Colonies in 1639 and settled in Southampton, NY. The book, Pierson Millenium, available from Heritage Books, is an excellent source for our line from Henry to Albert.

What is the full title of your source, "Harvard pg 294-295"?
Thanks,
Chuck Pierson

I feel sooo lost. I was never told much, but I know my G'ma moved to Washington from North Dakota and married my Grandpa, Harold Jones, and built the house I grew up in in 1953, had 5 kids, (my aunt and uncles) whom I know all of. My G'ma Margaret had the brother "Bud" who's name was Oscar along with a couple of sisters she had mentioned, but I was a kid when we talked about these things. My G'ma DID say something just b4 she died about her name not being Margaret when she was born. She said it was Margot. I'm starting to think my whole family tree is a lie... Maybe I'm just confused. Do u know how I might find the truth? I don't know the first thing about digging this stuff up.

Yeah. She was born in Dec 1915 and it turns out her fathers name WAS Hans Martinez but he changed it to Martin Hanson. So the name Hanson is a made up name to begin with, so going that route sent me to strangers with many similarities that threw my 4 a loop ha ha. Thanx for your time

I feel kinda dumb. I got names wrong and there is many similarities in our families, but it's not mine. I was going by names I remember from childhood and I was a bit wrong. It's kinda funny, but I'm going to use the names my aunt gave me and hopefully find the RIGHT grandparents. I'm glad we had this chat it's been fun-ny lol.

This is interesting... I'm not sure. My G'ma always talked about the orphanage she grew up in and that her dad's name was Owen and her brother that I knew named Uncle Bud who was actually Oscar. I never really looked into things b4, but I started looking into it after she died a few years ago and then today I actually did some searching and ur thing here came up. I recognize some photo's from my G'ma's house that I grew up in. Hmmmmm I'm Melisa Clauder daugher of Melanie Walker (Jones) grandaughter of Margaret Jones (Hansen)
