When I began my research I knew the names of my Grandparents and a bit of their history that I learned from my parents. My maternal and paternal Grandparents died when I was just a little one so I never really knew them.
When I began my research I only knew that my Father was of Norwegian descent and my Mother was
Irish and
German. No one knew where in Norway or Ireland and the family
Bible said my Grandmother's parents were from Spartan, Germany (there is no Spartan, Germany!)
I began my research by collecting all the records I could get my hands on about my Grandparents--census records, birth records, death records, land records, and church records and these records lead me eventually to my Great Grandparents. If you have living aunts and uncles, interview them to see what new information can be gleened. I trace entire families because I always am able to develop further information that may be found on documents of a sibling that helps the entire effort.
I still have not been able to get my
Irish line traced any further than my Great Grandparents. I know where they came from in Ireland but that's about it. But, this took years to develop!
