I'm looking for information on Mason families that migrated from New Jersey/New York and settled in the Mason County area. Also, many finally settled in Pike Co, and Adams Co, IL. Some names in specific would be Carlo and Lydia Mason and he was originally born in Vermont. Anyone that has any information, pls feel free to contact me directly at rmrmason1@gmail.com

Much of my info on William Marshall and his family agrees with what you have. One difference is that Elisha was born in TN and not MO. Where did you get your information on this family? I would like to know if we used the same sources or have different ones so as to compare accuracy of our information. I do not know (father) William's wife's name either though we have been looking for years. I am descended from (father) William's youngest child, James. We do know that (father) William had 15 children. We are sure of 10 of those children and possibly 2 more (Robert and Rhuanna). There have been several Marshall/Carpenter marriages. Son William married Nancy Jane Carpenter who was the daughter of one of Abner's older sons. They were married in Cass Co., IL.around 1852. I have found not any record of them in the 1860 census. Do you know anything about them? One of Abner and Mary's daughters has a Levi Marshall living with her and her husband's family in the 1860 census and wondered if William and Nancy Jane died and their son was living with this daughter's family. Which daughter of Abner and Mary's are you descended from? Would love to share info with you. I have much more info to share with you if you are interested. My cousins and I have been researching these families for many years but we still have many unanswered questions.

Glad I was able to help...

During the 1840's & early 50's their was a major influenza outbreak in Illinois, wiping out partial/entire families.
John Colvin Ellis & Sarah Ann Ranson (possibly RANSOM)

I'm searching for one of my paternal ancestors, a Sarah Ann RANSON. I'm not sure that's her last name, I'm thinking it is possible that RANSOM is the correct one.

I've found a copy of the 1860, Pike County, Martinsburg Township that is showing a William RANSOM married to a S L, with a 1 year old daughter denoted as S A. I can't find her in ANY other document anywhere. I'm hoping someone with access to records, or knowledge of the area, can help.

I do know that MY Sarah Ann married John Colvin Ellis on 14 Dec 1879 in Mason County, Illinois. I've checked a map & it seems that Bath, Mason County, Illinois is about 80 miles away. John was born in Bath, Mason County, Illinois. I'm hoping, *fingers crossed*, that this might be my Sarah Ann.

John Colvin's parents are Effie Ann (McKim) & Samuel Ellis. John was born 13 Sept 1860.

If you have any information I am happy for even the smallest shred! I am cross posting this in the Pike County board in hopes of getting some thread to follow.

Thanks again for any & all help! I really appreciate it!

Does anybody know about George W. Hawks and his family in Mason County? Supposedly, he married F. Stainer in 1855. She was born in the area and he was born in Kentucky. The family scattered some after her death in 1873.
Hawks may or may not have been their last name as one son assumed a different surname for a time in Texas.

I am also doing research on the Carpenter & Marshall families. Abner Carpenter and Mary Marshall are my 5th G-grandparents. I have Abner Carpenter b. 1778 in Amherst Virginia, d. 1853 Snicarte, Mason, Illinois. Mary Marshall b. 1803 and d. September 9, 1855 ,Mason Illinois. Mary is buried in Finch-Johnson Cemetery in Mason, Illinois. Abner is buried in Snicarte Cemetery in Bath, Illinois. These burial records I found on Find A Grave. I Would be especially interrested in any information you have on William Marshall and will share the information that I have.
Ruth

I am not familiar with your particular names but my ancestor and several siblings went from Pike Co. to Logan Co. on the west next to Mason County, IL between 1850 (for land) and 1860. You are lucky in finding him with the various names. I have one that got into trouble a lot (horse stealing in KY, drunk in Montgomery Co., IL, served in 1832 Black Hawk War, in prison for larceny, escaped, served in one of the Mex-Tex conflict, back in jail, and etc about 3 more times. There was an 1841 wanted posted from the US Marshall's office(I got a great description of him) and that is the last trace. Good Luck

Now, wasn't that a simple answer that I actually hadn't thought of.

Lydia's full name was Lydia Elizabeth Doak. Her father was James Wilson Doak. She met - who I will call now - Jesse William Lee in Mason City, Illinois. The reason I say "call now" is that on the 1880 census, he was George W. Lee in Spring Creek, Pike County, Illinois. Listed as a Boarder with Elvira Hatch and her son, Andrew. But Jesse was running and on every census he was a different person:
1880 - George W. Lee
1883 - William Lee - marriage record
1900 - James W. Lee
1910 - John W. Lee
1920 - Jesse W. Lee
1930 - William J. Lee

His kids said someone also called him Hardingston. He had major problems in his life and moved his family a lot. Every 10 years he was somewhere different.

He was also almost 20 years older than Lydia, who was 18 when she married him.

Thanks so much for that suggestion about relatives. I will also take a look.

Joni

Hi,

I wonder if one of you historical/genealogical buffs could help me out.

If, in 1880, 1881, or 1882, a horse trader was living in Spring Creek, Pike County, Illinois, would there have been a place in Mason City, Illinois, that this person would have a reason to travel to? Was that a good area to trade/sell horses?

Also was this a good farming area? Ancestors living in Nauroo, Illinois would travel to Mason City. They were farmers (name: Doak).

I'm just sort of trying to get an idea of how and why two people may have met in Mason City, Illinois, when one lived in Nauroo and one in Spring Creek, Illinois.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Joni

I'm checking with a cousin of mine who has done a lot of work on cemeteries here over the years. If she doesn't know, I'll check with someone else here who walked these cemeteries for D.A.R. in 1980s to add to the Mason County Cemeteries book. I looked in the book and there are no listings for Rodgers.

Also, have you ever looked on findagrave.com. They have 49 burials listed, with some pictures of tombstones. Look under "Swing Grove" (no 's' on the end) in Cemetery Lookup. They have one Rodgers listed, a child of JM & BE.

That is so sad! I wonder if they will ever be dug up or found at the bottom of the hill? I am sure that would take a lot of time and money to fund a project like that. It is a beautiful location. In your opinion, did no one prior to the 50's take an inventory of the graves there?

I am also very interested with any records kept regarding Swings Grove cemetery. Does anyone know the year the rain/flood may have washed the tomb stones away? Was there any record book kept that I could look thru for names? I believe the parents of John E. Rodgers, an infant that died in 1870, are also there, but no gravestones can be found for them. Their names are John M. Rodgers and Biddy E. Rodgers. Any suggestions?

Per my dad's stories, the family was originally from your area (Ohio) but don't know when they migrated to northern michigan. There are also quite a few Marrison's in the Lansing Michigan area.
My dad was William Howard (born 1924), his dad was William Henry (born around 1900+/-) but don't know the linage prior to that.

Thank you for your assistance. I went to the website you mentioned and read through the history of Kilbourne. Henry C Ruggles was a son of James M, as was my great grandfather, Albert G. They both owned Drug Stores in Kilbourne. I have a photo taken at the turn of the century or earlier, maybe in the mid 1890's of the front of the Ruggles Drug. It was very ornate. Anyway, I then went to the Bath story and found more information of the Ruggles Family. I wish to visit their home, where Abraham Lincoln once visited. Thanks for your assistance and hope to visit the area in June of this year. Larry

I just did a quick search and have not found an address yet, but did find an old book online you may not have seen yet. KILBOURNE YESTERDAY AND TODAY (1870-1970) by The Kilbourne Centennial Assoc. It has a picture of General James M. Ruggles and a bio which mentions Albert. On one page it lists James M. in 1874 living on Section 7. Another page mentions the Harris and Blunt furniture store was located where the Henry C. Ruggles drug store once was.

"At the east end of the block, now vacant, have been a bowling alley, Craggs and Field, Aney's, and Walter Dew's Store. The wide red and green building has housed the G. J. Merrill General Store, the Gore and Madison Store, Seymour Holmes Store and post office, a drug store operated by A. G. Ruggles and later by Mr. Christman, and several restaurants."

Also, you might try to locate this: "General James M. Ruggle's History of Mason County (1879)"
My great grandfather, Albert Ruggles owned a drug store in Kilbourne. Does the building still exist and where was it located, like street number. This would have been in the 1890's. He was the son of James Monroe Ruggles, General in Civil War, buried in Bath, IL.

All born btw 1850 and 1860. I found Joseph and Matilda in the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1863 Matilda married John L Selby. Joseph must have died by 1863. I am looking for his death date and where he is buried. The infant son was born and died in 1853 and is buried at the Bethel Baptist Cemetery at Saidora, Mason Co.
