I'm seeking information about the John and Jennie Johnson family who were on the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census in this area. The children were Chester, Vera, Roy, Mabel, Maynard, Floyd, Emerery and Jennette. Jennie was from Sweden and I believe her maiden name was Nelson. John was a farmer and I believe Chester worked for the railroad. I don't know where they married.

The Lacon Courthouse has marriage records from 1839. Address is 122 N. Prairie St., Lacon, IL 61540. Phone number is (309) 246-6325. Marriage records are $7. I was told personal check or money order is okay. The fee is kept whether or not they are able to find the record you want. They also asked for a copy of a driver's license.

I am trying to find any information on Mary Dillingham, who was living in Lacon, Illinois in the 1850s. She was born in New York about 1832. By 1860, she was married to John H. Kirby, who was living at Low Point, in Woodford. The 1860 has them both living there. While Dillingham is mentioned in several genealogies (including one published source) I have not been able to track anything of her family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
William Kirby

Joy and Davis in 1850 Marshall County

I just found out my ancestor C.C. Joy was living with his wife Eunice (Davis), sons James (age 7) and Wm (age 5), and sister-in-law Maria Davis "idiot" in Marshall, IL. I know Eunice died in 1850, and I have no other records of Maria Davis either-- but until this time they were living in Delaware County, Ohio. Afterwards C.C and sons went back to Delaware County, Ohio, and then moved to Mahaska County, Iowa.

Does anyone have further info about this family in Marshall, IL? Perhaps a burial record for Eunice JOY or Maria DAVIS? The census doesn't even say what town or area it was. Frustrating!

If you have access to the book, Sparland , Il Sesquicentennial 1855 to 2005, there is information on the Waugh home, built about 1886. This home is on the National Register of Historic Places, as of 1978. More information could be found at the Marshall county Historical society, located in Lacon, Marshall Co., Illinois. Good luck with your research.
Rita Campbell Gholson

I am looking into purchasing a historical property at 202 School St. known at the Robert Waugh House and refurbishing it to it's original condition. I know this house is in serious disrepair but it is beautiful and a dream. I was wondering if anyone had any historical information about the house, the history of the area, and what was going on in 1870 in the area the house was built? This would not only help be to rebuild this house, but also give me more appreciation for it.

Thank-you so much.

The Crane family moved from New Jersey to Illinois in the early 1830s or late 1920s. Most of the years were spent in Peoria County but in later years John purchased land in Stark County, I am seeking burial information. From census information it appears he died prior to 1880 though one article states it was in 1881. Louisa is later found again in Peoria County, where she may have died though the same article says she died in Fulton County. I believe they would be buried together though that may not be the case. It is possible they are buried in Marshall County having lived there at some time in thier lives.

Robert Avery [Bob] BARNES

It is told in the family that this gentleman played for the Chicago White Sox during the 1920’s.

Sure enough I found a Bob Barnes on a list of White Sox players but his career appeared short lived. His first game being on July 8th 1924, with his last game on July 10th 1924, a rather short, two game career?

Bob Barnes Stats

Bob Barnes was born on Monday, January 6, 1902, in Washburn, Illinois. Barnes was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 8, 1924, with the Chicago White Sox.

Biographical Data

Birth Name: Robert Avery Barnes
Nickname: Lefty
Born On: 01-06-1902
Born In: Washburn, Illinois
Zodiac: Capricorn
Died On: 12-08-1993
Died In: Peoria, Illinois
Cemetery: Lacon Cemetery, Lacon, Illinois
College: University of Illinois
Bats: Left
Throws: Left
Height: 5-11½
Weight: 150
First Game: 07-08-1924 (Age 22)
Last Game: 07-10-1924
Draft: Not Applicable

According to the listing, Bob was born January 6th 1902 in Washburn, Illinois and died, confirmed according to the SSDI, on December 8th 1993 in Peoria District, Illinois. [Actually in Lacon].

Name: Robert A. Barnes
SSN: 323-32-5204
Last Residence: 61540 Lacon, Marshall, Illinois, United States of America
Born: 6 Jan 1902
Died: 8 Dec 1993
State (Year) SSN issued: Illinois (1955 )

The problem I have is that of pinpointing his BARNES family. I supposed that his father was a BARNES born in England. Sunderland, Durham preferably. However, none of the Illinois BARNES families, as shown in the 1910 and 1920 census returns appear to match this profile.

Could our Bob be the Robert A. BARNES, shown in the 1930 census, Single, as an Attorney in General Practice who I found lodging with Charles A. BUCK at his Grocery Store on High Street, Lacon, Illinois?

It may just happen that a member of the family is a subscriber to this list or that a subscriber knows the family?

All leads towards solving this problem would be most appreciated.

Many thanks for any assistance

Rod Clayburn
Hampshire, England.
I gather that Perrys are buried in several cemeteries in Marshall Co and one or two are buried in Woodford Co. If you know where they might be buried I'd appreciate any photos you have time to get. I believe there are several Perrys in the Martin Cemetery. I think I heard that Pierce Perry and either his son or grandson. I'd be interested to know where Pierce Perry's, b. 1800, wives are buried. 1st wife-name unknown, but I believe they were still living in Scott Co, KY when she died. 2nd wife was Charity Lucas and 3rd wife was Mary Lucas Perry.

Did you indicate that Elijah Perry was still alive? Do you know how I could contact him? How old a person is he?

LouAnn, I would appreciate anything you have on the Pope family since Mary Ellen Dobson Pope is a half-sister to my gg grandmother, Susan Dobson.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi, all researcher, I need help in piecing together the Pierce Perry family. I received information yesterday that he is the father of my gg grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Perry who married Charles Dobson.

Pierce moved to Marshall county, IL from Scotts county, Kentucky around 1831 or 1832.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. If you'd like to have the text, contact me at LSpyres1 at suddenlink dot net
The last one before the @ is the numeral one. I'll be glad to send it to you.

One of the Dobsons later marries into the Hollenback family. I'd like to know where the potters' field cemetery is located.

I have Davidsons from Marshall/Woodford area in my file, but no Davisons.

LouAnn in NC

There is a genealogical survey of Illinois which lists it as the Hoyt aka Old Henry Cemetery. There is a City of Henry Historical and Genealogical Society listed on Main Street. Good Luck.

Over the years I have never received any reply to Genforum queries, the Genweb site, Lacon Library or Marshall County Courthouse, I even tried to hire one of two researchers listed on the old genweb site. I never received an answer from anyone. I even submitted information on the Civil War soldiers from Marshall County and never got an answer.

There was a woman named Piper who posted a lot of Marshall County information on her website. The Marshall County genweb told everyone to contact her and provided a link to it. That's gone now too. The old genweb site had outdated information on meetings etc several years old with no updates.
Two of my ancestors who immigrated in the mid-1850s and settled in Hopewell township submitted Petitions for Naturalization at the Marshall County Circuit Court in Lacon. The Soundex index to naturalization petitions for U.S. District & Circuit Courts, Northern District of Illinois and Immigration and Naturalization Service District 9, 1840-1950 had the images of the Petition cards. Family History Library US/CAN Film 1432161 (S-525 Anders to S-530 Izrael) or 1432162 (S-530 J. to S-535 Iver A.) would most likely have an image of the Petition card you seek. Look for cards listing the Marshall County Circuit Court then cross reference the name. If you are lucky, the card will show immigration date and port of arrival, which none of mine did. This assumes however he filed for naturalization in Marshall County and not Cook County. If he filed in Cook County, then your search on these films becomes a little broader.

His 1st wife was Susan Hollenback. Do you have any photos of the Dobson Cemtery?

Are you related to Elijah L. or one of the other Elijah in the family? In the material that the Historical Society sent, it showed there had been 6 generations of Elijahs.
Do you have any information on any of the Perry/Lucas families?
Hi,
I'm related to the Pierce Perry and Thomas Dobson families. If anyone has any information on either family, I'd appreciate any information.
I am aware of the incident with my ggg grandfather Thomas Dobson and Mr Hollenback. If you have World Vital Records you can locate the book with the article in it. Records of the Olden Time: Fifty Years on the Prairies. is the name of the book. On pages 429 and 430, you'll find the record of "A Horse Plays Detective". In Jan 2, 1902(Thursday) there is an article in the Lacon Home Journal that also covers the incident. There is a second article in the Jan. 16, 1902 paper.

nksundra, I'd be interested in hearing your version of the "legend".

When Marshall Co Historical Society did a survey of the cemeteries in Marshall Co, they documented that Thomas, his wife-Mary and a son, Thomas Dobson(3 days old) were buried 'behind Virgil Marshall house & surrounded by a metal fence. This resident is located just outside of Pattonsburg.'
Hey Jennifer,

More information, Pax list for Leonard and Katherine Klier was transposed incorrectly as Blier but you look close enough you can see that it is a( K ),anyway they arrived in New Orleans from Hessen on the ship Bremen in feb 1848. Leonhard was 52 Katherine 36, here's a kicker a Jacob 20,(never knew about him) then Maria(Mary)4, and Helene(Lena) 2. Now of course in my grandmother records she must of written things down wrong. As this is the 2nd piece of evidence it was Leonhard. But she also had a JG so I am wondering if that was Jacob and if it was Jacob that died on arrival in St Louis? As I have yet to find him, anywhere else.
Now I checked parish records for Wennings area Hessen darmstadt and found no Kliers listed. for the time of Mary and Lenas births. I then looked to see if there were any possibly Base or Behrs based on Catherines last name and none of those were listed either.

Hello!

I am looking for the parents of Charles Jesse, B. Oct 12, 1838 in Prussia. D. Aug.21, 1899 Hastings, Ne. Married Feb 26, 1867 Stark, Co. Il. to Charlotte Brewer. Need immigration info. Would have immigrated between 1838-1860. First census he showed up in was 1860 as Jesson living as laborer for Calvin White, Stark Co. Il. Have tryed obit, probate, marriage license to no avail. Don't know of any other family member that immigrated with him. Charles had a Henry Gess, B. Indiana 1852, living with him in Richland, Marshall, Il in 1870 Census. Charles was using Gess as last name in 1870 census. By 1880 Census in Ayr, Adams Conty, Ne. he was Jesse.

Thank you for any help.
My grandmother lived in the small house across the street from Pattonsburg church. She used to tell us about an incident involving horses and buggies, it sounded to us like Mr. Dobson challenged Mr. Hollenback to a race. (that's how we understood it) There was a crash and Mr. Hollenback died. Then Mr. Dobson was chased by the police, until he realized he would be captured and he killed himself. (I didn't know if this was appropriate on a public board) We didn't have many details, but the ones we had were terribly interesting to us kids.
She would indicate over toward the Marshall's property that the Dobsons were buried there, since a suicide would disqualify one from being in a regular cemetery.

When my cousin and I finally found the cemetery, it was a thrill, since we had heard that story so many times.

So, are you related to Elijah Perry?

Nancy

No, I'm related to the Davisons of Pattonsburg.

But my grandma always told this story about a race between a Hollenback and a Dobson, which killed the Hollenback. It became a legend and she always gestured vaguely towards where the Dobson was buried. (since he was held to blame, he had to be buried in a potter's type field). Finally my cousin and I located that cemetery, and then the Hollenback one as well.

Have you heard that story?

seahour, if you contact me via e-mail, I can give you the names of the Perry kids that I know of. My cousin (who I'm meeting in Pattonsburg) may know if they're still in Illinois.

nksundra@aol.com

No, Elijah passed away a couple of years ago. I believe Elijah's wife is still alive, but last I heard she was in poor health. She had done quite a bit of study on the area and her family.

I will keep a lookout for the graves while I'm in the 'burg.
I know I've seen a grave for Pierce Perry.

No, I'm not related to the Perrys. But I knew Elijah, and I thought his life was so interesting. This was another story us kids were interested in. Elijah was married, and his first wife and child died in childbirth. Then he remarried and his second wife and child died when their car was hit by a train near Toluca. (There was another young mother and her two children killed also) Then Elijah remarried, and his third wife is still living as far as I know. But I couldn't imagine all the tragedy he had experienced, but you wouldn't know it to talk to him. My aunt was a flower girl at the funeral. (A tradition that has gone by the wayside)

I am going to be in Pattonsburg this Monday for a few days, and I am going to try and get some photos. I do have some of the Dobson cemetery, but they aren't digital. This time I'll have a digital camera, so I can send them more easily. I'd be happy to send them to you when I get back.

Also, if you have anything you want me to look for in the cemeteries in the area, let me know.

(I know it sounds like us kids were obsessed with death, but honestly, those stories were so interesting!)

Ridenour who possibly may have been buried near his sister Mary Elizabeth (Ridenour) Clark and can't find that there is any listing of who is buried in Barnes Cemetery.

thanks,
dorrie

I'm looking for information on John Rogers who appears in the 1860 and 1870 Lacon, Marshall, IL censuses. He was married to Cassanna McDonald Kidd in the 1870 census. If anyone knows anything about this family or Cassanna's children Mary A. and Rebecca, I would be interested in hearing from you.

Thanks.

m_cargo@yahoo.com

Naturalization Records

Can someone, please, tell me where one living in Evans Twp in the 1850-70 time frame would have gone to be naturalized.
Angus James Smith, who dropped the Angus in the USA, came from Scotland between 1830 and 1852 as he was married in Cook County January 1853 to Nellie deRyder. In the 1900 and 1910 censuses he states that he immigrated in 1869. His mother is not enumerated in the 1860 census but is in the 1870 and 1880 censuses so I am thinking he might have gone back to Scotland in 1868-9 and brought her back with him. Any help will be appreciated. I have tried cross-referencing arrivals of Angus James Smith and Margaret Smith, James and Margaret Smith, and Angus and Margaret, but have not found any that look like a good possibility for the port of New York.
