A Further Note About the 1840 Census Record of Justus JONES

Within another thread, I recently questioned the validity of two Census records in 1840 Census for LaSalle County which seem to show in consecutive records the presence a male age 100 or more:

William BROWN : 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [LaSalle, IL 1840]
Justus JONES: 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [LaSalle, IL 1840]

A third consecutive record, that of Joshua EVANS, also seems to show a third man over age 100:

Joshua EVANS: 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [LaSalle, IL 1840]

The "1" in the latter record seems to possibly have been altered to indicate that it was mistakenly entered and the column count shows only two 100 year old males, the ONLY two in the county and two of only thirteen statewide in Illinois.

The central premise of that post is that males age 100+ were EXTREMELY RARE in 1840 (as they are today) and there is some valid reason to suspect that the organization of the 1830 and 1840 Census forms may have resulted in the inflation of the counts of very elderly males (100+) when stray counts for females under age 5 strayed into the wrong tabulation column. Comparison of male and female counts of the very elderly and other mortality data seems to suggest that as many as HALF of the reported males age 100+ nationally may be erroneously transcribed.

With a better appreciation of Joseph WARNER (d 05 Sep 1842 - Marshall, IL), it seems reasonably certain that the indication within Justus JONES' Census record was purposeful and intended to describe Joseph WARNER.

I will separately note the new information discussed within the sketch and its implications within the cited thread regarding the BROWN ancestors.
