My grandmother lived in the small house across the street from Pattonsburg church. She used to tell us about an incident involving horses and buggies, it sounded to us like Mr. Dobson challenged Mr. Hollenback to a race. (that's how we understood it) There was a crash and Mr. Hollenback died. Then Mr. Dobson was chased by the police, until he realized he would be captured and he killed himself. (I didn't know if this was appropriate on a public board) We didn't have many details, but the ones we had were terribly interesting to us kids.
She would indicate over toward the Marshall's property that the Dobsons were buried there, since a suicide would disqualify one from being in a regular cemetery.

When my cousin and I finally found the cemetery, it was a thrill, since we had heard that story so many times.

So, are you related to Elijah Perry?

Nancy

Hi,
Thomas Dobson's son Charles Dobson married Susan A. Hollenback, d/o Daniel Hollenback and niece to Harrison Hollenback. Susan d 1849. They had two children, Sophia who died in infancy and Mary Ellen who m Benjamin Pope. Charles m 2]Mary Elizabeth Perry.

I have several Pope descendants in my file if you're interested in them. I didn't pursue the children from his second marriage, as they're not Hollenbacks. I'll be happy to share what I have.

Thank you for the information on your family's version of the legend.

Yes, I'm related to Elijah L Perry. He was a brother to my ggg grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Perry and they were children of Pierce Perry. Mary E married Charles Dobson(his 2nd wife) who was the son of Thomas Dobson. His 1st wife was Susan Hollenback. Do you have any photos of the Dobson Cemtery?

Are you related to Elijah L. or one of the other Elijah in the family? In the material that the Historical Society sent, it showed there had been 6 generations of Elijahs.
Do you have any information on any of the Perry/Lucas families? I just learned about two months ago that Pierce Perry was Mary's father so I'm still trying to learn as much as I can on these families. Any help would be appreciated

Susan from KS

No, I'm not related to the Perrys. But I knew Elijah, and I thought his life was so interesting. This was another story us kids were interested in. Elijah was married, and his first wife and child died in childbirth. Then he remarried and his second wife and child died when their car was hit by a train near Toluca. (There was another young mother and her two children killed also) Then Elijah remarried, and his third wife is still living as far as I know. But I couldn't imagine all the tragedy he had experienced, but you wouldn't know it to talk to him. My aunt was a flower girl at the funeral. (A tradition that has gone by the wayside)

I am going to be in Pattonsburg this Monday for a few days, and I am going to try and get some photos. I do have some of the Dobson cemetery, but they aren't digital. This time I'll have a digital camera, so I can send them more easily. I'd be happy to send them to you when I get back.

Also, if you have anything you want me to look for in the cemeteries in the area, let me know.

(I know it sounds like us kids were obsessed with death, but honestly, those stories were so interesting!)

Hi,

If you have time, I wouldn't mind having photos of any of the Perry's buried in the area. I gather that Perrys are buried in several cemeteries in Marshall Co and one or two are buried in Woodford Co. If you know where they might be buried I'd appreciate any photos you have time to get. I believe there are several Perrys in the Martin Cemetery. I think I heard that Pierce Perry and either his son or grandson. I'd be interested to know where Pierce Perry's, b. 1800, wives are buried. 1st wife-name unknown, but I believe they were still living in Scott Co, KY when she died. 2nd wife was Charity Lucas and 3rd wife was Mary Lucas Perry.

Did you indicate that Elijah Perry was still alive? Do you know how I could contact him? How old a person is he?

LouAnn, I would appreciate anything you have on the Pope family since Mary Ellen Dobson Pope is a half-sister to my gg grandmother, Susan Dobson.

Thanks for all your help.

No, Elijah passed away a couple of years ago. I believe Elijah's wife is still alive, but last I heard she was in poor health. She had done quite a bit of study on the area and her family.

I will keep a lookout for the graves while I'm in the 'burg.
I know I've seen a grave for Pierce Perry.

seahour, if you contact me via e-mail, I can give you the names of the Perry kids that I know of. My cousin (who I'm meeting in Pattonsburg) may know if they're still in Illinois.

My Pope data is all available on our Hollenback family website: http://pages.suddenlink.net/lspyres1

There is an index of names on the site that you can use to find them. If you have trouble, contact me using the email link on the site.

It appears that I still have work to do on this line!
