My greatgrandmother Sarah Laire's brother (Richard M. Lare)was in the Civil War and claimed residence in Alton,IL in Madison County. He joined the army on August 11, 1862 and died in Paris,KY on November 1, 1862.Her family lived in Madison County, both in Alton & Monticello. My question is--- if he died in KY would he buried there or would they ship his body home? I have sent for his military records from the IL Archives but it is driving me crazy wondering what happened to all those poor boys who died in the civil war. He was only 19 years old and the only son.Does anyone know how one would find out where a civil war casualty was buried? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too have a family member that died in the Civil War. He is buried at East Point, TN since that is where he died. He was from Palmar, Illinois. Unless they dug them up later I think they buried them where they died. You may of all ready found your family member since it has been awhile since you posted this.

Thanks Dorothy for taking the time to reply. It really has been quite some time since I posted this query. I did find out where he was buried a while ago.

I have a member of my family who died at Cape Girardeau, Mo.
They brought him up to Jefferson Barricks for burial.
These records are online you may check, it is worth a try.
More than likely he was buried where he died. However, they brought my relative UP the river.

You might try looking in the Illinois Digital Archives -- www.idaillinois.org/mainpage.html -- they have a lot of information details including a detailed early history of Madison county which has an index. Perhaps you can find your answer there. In Madison county there is a graveyard in the Alton cemetery which has civil war soldiers buried in it. I believe the cemetery has been surveyed and a list of soldiers buried there is listed -- try www.usgtombstones.org/registry.html -- that lets you pick a state and it will let you know if there is a cemetery which has been surveyed and if it has been there will be a list of names attached. Also, depending on the family, a monument might have been erected with their service dates in a family plot despite burial elsewhere. Hayner library also has a listing of cemeteries that the Madison county genealogical society has surveyed but they are located within the library... Hopefully this helps you out and gives you a place to start while you wait for info from the archives -- and good luck to you!!!
