Edna Mellon was the daughter of John Mellon and Maranda Anderson. According to the IL State Archives, John and Maranda (Miranda)were married 16 May 1861 in Marion Co, IL. Maranda Mellon married Louis H. Haywood on 18 Aug 1893 in Macon County. Edna Mellon and William Cline were married on 15 Apr 1891 in Macon Co., IL. According to the marriage license list published in the Review of Decatur, IL, on the day of their wedding, Edna was 18 and William was 24.

1870 Census, Pana, Christian Co., IL - John Mellen(38)b. Maryland, Marade (28)b. IL, Paul (8)b. IL, and Nora (5)b. IL

1880 Census, Pana, Christian Co., IL - John Millin (48), Marada (40), Paul (19), Nora (15), Edna (10), Sarah (1). John makes boots and shoes. John's parents were both born in Ireland. Miranda's parents were both born in Tennessee.

A wedding notice for the Mellon-Haywood wedding can be found in The Weekly Herald Despatch of Decatur, IL published 26 Aug 1893.

1900 Census, Lucas Co, OH - Lewis Haywood (40),b. NC, Mary Haywood (53). Corman Klein (6)b. IL, Paul (3)b. IL, and Helen (2)b. Ohio. The children are listed as grandchildren. I have been unable to find Edna. According to the census, Maranda/Marada/Mary gave birth to four children, all living.

1910 Census, Lucas Co., OH - Fred Kessler (29), Sadie Kessler (28)2nd marriage, Helen Cline (12), Marada Haywood (65)widowed, Robt Latham (31)b.
Cline-Mellon marriage 1891

Hello all,

I'm looking for info on a William B. Cline who married Edna Mellon in 1891, Macon County, Illois. I have some suspicions this may be my 2g grandmother, Edna Mellon who married a Cline, then in 1904 married Robert Latham in Ohio.

Family legend has it that she was a member of the banking clan of the same name but when she married Cline (whom they disapproved of) she was "cut off". Then something happened to Mr. Cline and she married Robert Latham who later adopted her children (fathered by Cline).

I've got a copy of her marriage register (1904 to Robert Latham) which lists her age at 26 (b. 1878) and using the last name Cline. If she were really a Mellon and born in 1878 than the supposed marriage to William B. Cline would have been when she was 15 (with her first child, Corman, born in 1893 when she was 17). Quite possibly this would be scandalous enough to "cut her off" from the family fortune. If the story holds...

So, can anyone out there help me? Or at least point me in the right direction? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Steve Vaught

Go to www.findagrave.com to get a list of 45 interments in the Garver (Brick) Cemetery. There's an interactive map and GPS data.

Garver (Brick) Cemetery
The Garver Cemetery is located next to the Brick Church in Section 28 of Whitmore Township, about a mile east and a mile south of Oreana, Illinois.
John, Jacob and David, three Garver brothers and three Garver sisters and their husbands, Joseph Rife, Sr., Henry Hummell, and John Epler came form Dauphin and Lancaster Counties, Pennsylvania in the late 1830s. A part of Whitmore township soon became known as the Garver Settlement. The settlement also extended into Hickory Point Township.
The first religious services in the Garver Settlement were held in the home of David Garver, then in the Garver school house. A church was built in 1864 from brick burned in the Garver timber, the Garver men doing the work. The church was called the Brick Church, but is still often called the Garver Church. In early days the building was used by the United Brethren Church and at time since then by other denominations. After the original church organization was gone, the building was used for many years for funerals.
An engraving over the door of the church says: "United Brethren Church - 1865."
Info from Death Certificates

I found the death certificates for George Whiteman, Katie Whiteman and Viola Whiteman at the Missouri State Archives website. I believe that Katie was born in Alton, Madison Co.,IL and not Decatur, Macon County, IL.

Katie Whiteman
b. 3 Nov 1875 Birthplace: Alton, Illinois
d. 28 Jan 1920 Died: Maryland Heights, Central, St. Louis Co. Missouri
buried 31 Jan 1920 at Fee Fee Cemetery
Father: John YOUK, b. Alton, IL
Mothers Maiden Name: Unknown
The 1900 Census says that Katie's father was born in Germany and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Katie was enumerated in 1920 Census before her death. Ancestry indexed the Whitemans as members of the Kinker family next door. According to the 1920 census, Katie's father was born in Holland and her mother in Pennsylvania.

George Whiteman
b. 17 Sep 1863 Birthplace: Missouri
d. 6 Nov 1837 Clayton, Clayton, St. Louis Co. Missouri
buried Fee Fee Cemetery
Father: George Whiteman b. Germany
Mothers Maiden Name: Jeanette Story b. Germany
1900 Census says father's name was Charles Whiteman. It also says George's mother was born in Scotland. George's brother Charles, his sister Isabelle and his father, Charles, live next door to Katie and George.

Viola Isabel Whiteman
b. 2 Apr 1898 Birthplace: Creve Coeur, Missouri
d. 29 Jan 1920, Maryland Heights, Central, St. Louis, MO
buried 31 Jan 1920, Fee Fee Cemetery
Father: George Whiteman b. Creve Coeur, MO
Mother: Katie YOUK b. St. Louis, MO

There is a marriage record at Ancestry that says MRS. Katie Young married George Whiteman. The 1910 census has a M2 next to Katie's name. I found two different records for this union. One said the marriage was 4 Nov 1898 and the other said 4 Nov 1899 in St. Charles Co. MO.

I never found John and Magdelena. There is a marriage record for a John Yunk and Minnie Roberts, 4 May 1863 at the Madison Co, IL website at Rootsweb. Your Wood Pile Family Tree lists dates of death for John and Magdalena, but not a place of death. Where did they die?

Finally, in the 1900 census, Katie is listed as born in Illinois. Please note that Lottie is listed as having a father born in Missouri and a mother born in Missouri. Viola, however, is listed as having a father born in Missouri and a mother born in Illinois. This makes it look like Lottie was not Katie's child.

I am NOT related. My pleasure to help.
--Pam

Greetings - Sorry to say,I don't have any one part of the tree online, but,a relative on my wife's side of the family had put together a tree years ago that had a "Jungck" that married into the family. I have dug out the tree that is still in small book form that was done and it does not list his lineage where he came from. He and his wife had lived in St. Paul and on a small farm near Sandstone,Minnesota. William was mentioned that he worked on the railroad. This may be the same William Jungck, but would be interested to find out. My web address is bandbgabby@usfamily.net - Brad

My tree is located on rootsweb.com as The wood pile or dotwo is the database name. If you can't get there from this, try searching trees for this name Aron Wood born 1708. This is my Fathers namesake and his Great Grandmother, Dorothy Katherine Youngk (sp) is the sibling of this William we speak of. Reach me directly on yahoo if you like. Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you!
~Dot

Downing / Downen family

I am trying to track down the Downing families that I believe to be descended from Josiah/Joseph Downing who I think is the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson. Is anyone out there connected to this branch of the family?
Here is what I think I have pieced together so far...

I found a listing of the possible children of Josiah/Joseph Downing here -
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/D/DownenJosiahJoseph-Rebecca...

I believe I am related to this family through Elizabeth J. Downen who married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt County, IL in 1846. (I would like to verify that Elizabeth J. is actually the daughter of Josiah and Rebecca!)

The website above mentions that the wife of Josiah Downing might have been Rebecca Jane Troxel. But that the marriage record in Christian Co., KY, says Rebecca Mann. Anyone know any more about this possible Troxel connection?

It seems that Job Downen (the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson) along with his brother Josiah and father William moved to DeWitt County, Ill.

Job Downen married Alabama Williams in 1835 in Macon County, IL. He died in 1841 and Alabama later married Frederick Troxel (the father of William Ford Troxel).
Now I believe that William Downen also moved to IL and remarried to Ludica (Spencer)French. He was living in DeWitt County, IL in 1850.

Josiah Downing (48) was living in DeWitt county in 1850 with his family.
wife Rebecca, 45
Josiah 16
Margaret 14
Alfred C. 11
Job 8
Henry C. 6
Josephine 3
All of the children born in IL.

Mary Ann (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married Joseph Spencer in 1849 in DeWitt county, IL. This Joseph Spencer is also related to the Troxel family. Although I am not sure how he and Ludica are related.

As I mentioned earlier, Elizabeth Downen (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt county in 1846.

There is a marriage record for Mariah Downing (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) in Macon Co., IL in 1877 to Cyrus Hollinger. Could this have been her second marriage?

The family of Josiah/Joseph Downing then moved to Linn county Kansas, Mound city Twp. where they were in 1860.
Josid Downing, 58
Rebecca, 54
Alfred, 22
Job, 20
Josephine, 12
also living next door
J. Downing Jr. 25
Phebe, 26 - b. NY
Martha, 1 - b. Kansas

I have not been able to locate any of these family members in 1870 census.

In 1880 census, some are living in Saline County, Miami Twp., Missouri.
Job Downing, 38
wife Amanda, 31
Loretta, 12
Frank, 9
George, 7
Stella, 5
Nora, 11/12,
all the children born born in MO
living next door is Alfred Downing, 41

Also living in Saline County, Miami Twp. MO
Josiah Downing, 44,
wife Phebe, 43
Henry, 19
Annie, 14
John, 12
Mary, 10
Josiah, 7
all the children born in IL.

I have not been able to track these families any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated on trying to figure out this Downen / Downing puzzle. I would like to verify the children of Josiah and Rebecca and try to figure out where they ended up. Also if anyone has information on the family of William and Margaret Robinson, that might be helpful too. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

The enumeration includes:
Ezekiel - 52
Mary - 46
Walter - 24 - b. IL
George - 15 - b. IL
Lizzie - 11 b. IL
Mary - 9 b. IL
Hattie - 7 b. IL

There are some Pitts records at the Grayson Co. TX website which you will find by going to Rootsweb.com. Ezekiel and Walter J. are both listed in the 1887 City Directory as living at 514 W. Houston. There is an Arthur E. Pitts and an Elizabeth Pitts Stephenson buried in the West Hill Cemetery. There is also an index for a book called Sherman's Black Friday by H. L. Piner, a book about the Great Sherman Tornado on May 15, 1896. E. Pitts and W. J. Pitts are both listed in this index. Ezekiel and Walter may have been killed by the tornado.

I am not related. My pleasure to help.

Capt. James Scott served in the 3rd Battalion, 8th Company, Washington County, PA, militia in the Revolutionary War. He may have had other service. Later he traveled with others from his unit, presumably neighbors, to Ohio and then to Sangamon now Logan County, Illinois, arriving in 1822. There is James Scott on the records of the Lake Fork Predestinarian Baptist Church. Then he disappears. I recently ran across a mention of a James Scott in Macon County and I wonder if it is the same person.

I am not related to this man nor do I know anything about his genealogy or descendants if any. He traveled with these families for at least 40 years and then he disappeared. I'm curious. He is not buried in Logan County.

Just had to share with you. Edward and Catharine's son James Hunt who married Mary Tobin is my GrGrGreatGrandfather. I have been working on this family for the past week and came up with exactly the same problems you did. Wish I had read this message board first. The only new tidbit I found that you didn't mention, was an article in The Daily Review (Decatur, Illinois)on 09 Sept 1911 about daughter Anastasia Padgett (Ancestry.com 5 of 18)
Saying she had lost a court case in Denver, Colorado regarding her claim to the estate of the late David H. Padgett. She wanted Mrs. Katherine Padgett whom he married in 1891 removed as administratrix(?) of the estate. So Anna wasn't a widow after all. Bigamy? Nice to see I'm not the only one looking for answers to this mixed up family.

Elizabeth Kile and O. L. Stuart of Macon Co., IL

I am looking for direct descendants of O.L. Stuart that married Elizabeth Kile.

Their children were:
Mattie E. Stuart (m. Albert Scott)
Francis W? Stuart (died in infancy)
Bertha L. Stuart (m. Thomas J. Draper)
Jessie F. Stuart (m. William H. Smith)
Mary B. Stuart (m. W.M. Larkin)
Alta G. Stuart (m. Martin A. Corbett)
Carrie H? Stuart (? m. Hayes?)

I am working on my own genealogy, and do my best to help others when I can. I ran across the family Bible of O.L. Stuart at an auction. I am looking for a direct descendant of this family to try and get the Bible back into the family.

There is birth, marriage, and death information written in the Bible, as well as several hand-written pages (loose) added to the section - which include the births of some of the grandchildren.

This Bible was "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1892,..." and signed on the back inside cover by "O. Stuart" September 30, 1899.

I will send digital copies of the pages to anyone interested in this family. The first direct descendant to contact me that is interested in this Bible will have the opportunity to have it. I purchased it at auction for $9.00 and only ask for what I paid and any shipping costs. (I am not wanting to make money off this .... I only want what I paid for it so I am not out anything.) I want to help get this Bible back into the hands of the family in which it belongs. Maybe I'll be lucky and someday come across someone with a Bible in one of my lines willing to do the same! If it were one of my lines, to me it would be priceless. It breaks my heart that such a valuable genealogy tool (not to mention family heirloom), could be sold at a public auction. I am hoping that there is someone out there that is a direct descendant of this family that is interested in genealogy and would appreciate the true value of this Bible. (I only wish it were my line! What a find!!)

PLEASE email me at:
abcm191c@one-eleven.net

Decatur Review - 22 Mar 1928, p. 24

Mrs. Martha Woods, wife of Elza Woods, died at 11:20 o'clock Thursday morning at the home of her son, Marshall Taylor, 626 East Leafland avenue. She was sixty-seven years old last November. Her death was caused by cancer and followed a long illiness.

Mrs. Woods was born in Urbana, Nov. 4, 1860. Her home was in Clinton, Ind. for a long time. She came from there to Decatur two years ago to make her home. She was a member of the Christian church there. She is survived by her husband and two sons, Marshall Taylor of Decatur and George Taylor of Keokuk, IA. She also leaves a brother and a sister, John Collins and Mrs. Ellen Brown, both of Clinton, Ind. There are ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The body was taken to Dawson & Wikoff, funeral directors for burial.

Not related. My pleasure to help. - Pam

IL, Asa 9, John 7mos

1880 Census - District 20, Richfield, Adams Co., IL
George 39, Susan 30, John N 10, William 8, George W. 5, Asa 18, Asa W. 71 (George's father)

According to Decatur newspaper articles there was a proprietor at the City Hotel named George W. Sackett from approx. August 1890 to August 1891 or later. An employee of the hotel committed suicide and left George a love note. According to the articles, George drank too much, let his wife do the work and was arrested for abusing her. I didn't find anything to prove this was your ancestor.

Asa Sackett, son of G.W.,married in 1886 and lived in Macon County. John N. Sackett also married in Macon County in 1890. According to an article in the July 25, 1919 edition of the Decatur Review, their brother William Sackett was killed in Texas by a boy he had taken to raise. It says William left Blue Mound in 1904. Another article mentions that Asa was going to visit his sister, Mrs. Harvey Myers in Barry, IL.

According to the IL State Archives, there was a George Sackett who married Mary Bailey on June 18, 1848 in Macon County. I'm not sure how, or if they were related to your Sackett ancestors.

I'm not related. Hope this information helps. - Pam

He is also included in the IGI information at www.familysearch.org. According to these researchers, John W. Bigger was born 5 Apr 1836 in Miami, Ohio. He married Mary Elizabeth Bowen on 10 Nov 1857 in Miami, Ohio and he died 5 Oct 1906 in Boise, Ada, Idaho. In 1900 census, John W. is living in Laird, Phelps, Nebraska. John's parents can be found in Logan County, Illinois beginning with the 1850 census.

Not related.
