Hi, we actually purchased the steamer truck in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at an antique shop. It is so very nice and in very good shape. It is sitting upright and open in our livingroom at the moment. We would be willing to sell it. We bought it for $50.00 and would sell it to family, like yourself for the same amount. We realize how important family heirlooms are. We live in northeast Iowa, and you would have to come and get it or would have to make some arrangements. Please email us back. Thanks, Karen.
I don't understand your comment about the name of the mother of Ella May Collins Wilks Harvey not being Collins. Her birth mother was Charlotte Wilks Collins and her father was James Collins. Her mother died when she was an infant and she was raised in the home of her Wilks grandparents. She sometimes used the name of Collins and other times used Wilks.

The George Wilks family arrived in New York on August 15, 1849, on the Ship Sir H. Douglass, family identification 2914081, Microfilm No. M237, Roll 82. The port of departure was at Bristol. Coming with them were: George, 43, Susan, 42, George, 19, Job, 11 months, John 11 months, Charlotte 11, Thomas 9, Eliza 9, Fanny 5, James, 3.

George Wilks, Jr., came with them, then returned to England to get married. He and his new bride then returned to America and their first son was born here. For some reason they returned to Gloustershire and lived in the same area where they had lived before. George stayed in England and his father's obituary said that he had not seen George, (Jr.) for 27 years.

After much research, very little information has been found about George Wilks before his marriage in 1828. We know that George Wilks and Susan Aston were married on 28 April 1828 in Abinghall (Abenhall) in the Hundred of St. Briavells, Gloucester, England. The witnesses were Stephen and Amelia Aston. Stephen was Susan's brother and Amelia was his wife. In October, 1827, George Wilks and Susan Aston were the witnesses at the wedding of Stephen Aston and Amelia Baynham.

Birth information: Bishops Transcripts; Christenings-Marriages-Burials performed in the District of Christ Church; West Dean; Gloucester; England; p. 15 & 16; No. 121; FHL film 394366.

John Wilks was Christened in the District of Christ Church, West Dean, Gloucester, England, June 28, 1848. John son of George and Susan Wilkes of Five Acres, occupation Collier. James Banks performed the ceremony. His twin brother Job was Christened on the 23 day of June 1848.

I do not know why John and Job were not christened on the same day.

Ella was not John's sister. She was his niece. Her original name was Ella May Collins and she was the daughter of James and Charlotte Wilks Collins. Their children were Mary Ann, George, Lottie, and Ella May. James Collins is listed in the 1870 census, but Charlotte is not. I have not found anything more about them. Ella May, age 2, was living with her grandparents and Harriet.

I was just reading this again and I have a few thoughts. You noted information regarding Albert Benjamin Mallin followed by "is this the right one". According to his death certificate (which I have), Albert was born August 15, 1863 and died January 10, 1929. His parents names are listed correctly (spelling?). Similarly, you followed the information about George William Mallin with a notation (if the correct one). I have his death and obituary notices from the Galesburg newspaper and your information is correct. I do have a question from a separate posting regarding Ella May Collins (Wilks)Harvey. I have her death certificate from Osceola County, Florida. Her name is listed as Ella W. Harvey and her birthdate is listed as December 12, 1868 and her date of death is May 7, 1959. The information was provided by her husband, E.E. Harvey. She was buried at Mt. Peace Cemetery in St Cloud. Her husband incorrectly list a mother's last name as Collins. I'm sure there was a confusion since she used both Collins and Wilks at different times. I also noticed that she listed herself as Ella W. Harvey when she provided information for Harriet Wilks' death certificate. If you would like any of these documents, let me know.

I have the obituary for Job Wilks from the Galesburg Republican-Register. If you want the full text (which is lengthy) and a transcription of John Wilks obituary (John and Job are buried next to each other along with George and Susan Wilks, Reubin and Eliza Mallin, and Bertha Jane Curry and her family) in the Wataga Cemetery, I can send to you along with the pictures I have.

If you have seen the obituaries for Eliza Wilks Mallin, you know that Eliza considered Bertha Jane as a daughter. In addition, in the funeral notes for my grandfather (which may have been reflected in his obituary), she is listed as his sister.

Your information agrees with my research. I have additional details about Reuben's parents and siblings. His baptismal indicates that he was born in Gornalwood, Sedgley, Staffordshire. His middle name was Darby (after his mother's maiden name.) Fred Reuben remarried as did Anna. Charles Grossman was not Anna's brother although she did have five half-brothers. If you would like any more information, please let me know.

Fred Reuben Mallin was my grandfather. I wrote the initial posting when I began researching my family. Since then, I have found a great deal of information about both the Mallin and Wilks families. I would be happy to share any information you may have questions about. I can see that you have found much of the information that I have.

You may be interested to know that Albert Benjamin Mallin was born August 15, 1863 in Wataga, Illinois and died January 10, 1929 in Ekalaka, Carter County, Montana. He had moved after his mother's death to be near his daughter, Ella.

I would also be interested in any information on John Wilks' children beside Bertha Jane who was considered a sister by my grandfather since they grew up together. (I have a family picture of Reuben and Eliza's family which included Bertha.)

For several years, I have maintained a site with links to a variety of Illinois how-to research articles:

http://www.rootdig.com/illinois.html

These articles can be viewed at no charge.

My new newsletter "Casefile Clues," is a weekly publication that analyzes a document or family in each edition and discusses research methodology within the context of that one record. Records from a variety of places are included, but Illinois families and sources will be discussed on a regular basis. More information on that is at www.casefileclues.com.

Thanks!
Michael
This is a one-time only post

Hello,
I am researching for a blind granddaughter of Vera M. Larson and Earl Myers, and only have access to internet research. I am hoping someone can help with an obituary or any of Vera's parents or siblings. Here is what I know:

Vera M Larson m: Earl Myers Feb 28 1924 in Galesburg

She was born about 1898 and died 19 June 1972 in Knox county and may possibly be buried in the St Joseph's Cemetery in Galesburg.

They had at least 10 children - and I can only identify 2 of them: Harlan L Myers (b:1926) and Donna Lee Myers (died 1979 Nashville)

Vera was born in Illinois and her parents were born in Sweden according to the 1930 census - I can find no other record of her at all.

Any assistance you can provide would be truly appreciated by ,myself and her grandddaughter Roxanne Lynch (daughter of Donna Lee Myers)

Thanks,
Sara
Jax FL

I'm responding your 2002 posting, Foxie. This is a link to Unofficial Historian, Holly Reynolds' Facebook page, dedicated to East Galesburg: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=73256571235
I grew up in East Galesburg, attended the old Highland School there, before starting 8th grade at Knoxville. On another matter - is Wilson the last name of Elsie and was your grandmother Katheryn's married name Chapman. The only reason I mention this is I have a great aunt Elsie Krohn Wilson and know her daughter Kathryn Chapman very well. I can attach a picture in the future, if you are related to them.

I have found the following on Fred Reuben Mallin:
1. In the 1880 Census his is listed as Ford (age 12) in Rueben's household.
2. I found him in the Watkins Family Tree on Ancestory with a birth date of 27 Jan 1868 in Wataga; Marriage date of 27 Oct 1892 to Rose Anna rosson Kays; a death date of 30 Mar 1943 in Seattle, King, WA
3. In the 1910 Census he is living in Seattle, King, WA and is 42 years old. Anna R. is 40; Edward E. is 16; Fred R., Jr. is 14; Harvey W. is 11; Leah F. is 8; and Charles H. Jones is 38.
4. In the 1920 Census in Seattle it says he is divorced; his name is spelled Mallon age 50; his son Fred R. Wallon is age 29.
5. In the 1900 Census he is living in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois and is 32 years old; Ann is 26; Edward is 6; Fred R. is 4; Harvey is 2 and Charles Grossman is 28 (Anna's brother?)
6. I found Harvey living with his mother, who remarried and was living in California in the 1930 Census, didn't keep that information.
7. Albert Benjamin Mallin BD Aug 1863 in Wataga; married Emily Amelia Hedburgh or Hedburg on May 23, 1889, he was 25 and she 18.; Death date 10 Jan 1928 carter County, Montana (is this is the correct one).
8. 1900 Cenus he was living in Sparta, Knox, Il and BD listed as Aug 1863. He was 36, Emily C. 29, Ella M. 10, Annie E. 8
9. I have Rueben's BD as 2 Feb 1826 born in Staffordshire, Egland, DD 18 May 1898 in Wataga, Ill. I see him in the 1841 Staffordshire Census at age 15.
10. They had three children: George William, BD 18 Oct 1859 DD 18 Feb 1928 in Daytoa Beach, Fla (if the correct one); Albert Benjamin; and Fred Reuben.
11. I found him in the 1880 census in Wataga working as a coal miner he was 53 and Eliza was 40, Albert 16 and Ford (Fred) 12.
12. In the 1920 census Elizabeth was head of the household and Albert, age 56, was living with her.
Thank you for the additional information. The SSDI showed a Fred Rueben Mallin with a birth date of 29 Jan 1868 and a death date of 30 Mar 1943 in Seattle, Washington (my neighborhood). I will search more about this and let you know anything I find.

George William Mallin in the SSDI shows a birth date of 18 Oct 1859 and a death date of 18 Feb 1928 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Albert Benjamin Mallen's birth date is about Aug 1863, born in Wataga, Il. I found him living with his mother Eliza in the 1920 census and he was age 56.

Regarding the Collins children I have found the following:
George H. Collins Forn 29 Jan 1860 in Wataga; death date 15 Nov 1917 in Atchison, Kansas where he is buried. He married 8 Aug. 1893 in Cowher City, Mitchel Co., KS. Charlotte Collins was born 12 Nov 1863 in Galesburg and died 8 May 1946 (don't know who she married). Hattie Eliza Collis (Jones) was born 22 Feb 1869 in Rome, Henry Co., Il. and died 30 Apr 1955 in Atchison, KS and is buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Atchison. Her children are Dora Charlotte Collins Born 4 Mar 1895 in Stockton, Rocks Co., KS and died 5 Jan 1965 in Casper, Wyoming and buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Atchison, KS. Another daughter if Georgia Annis Collins born 14 Mar 1894 at Dawns, Osborne Co., KS and died 11 Sept 1967 in Atchison and is buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery as well. I also show a Mary Ann Collins born about 1853 in Maryland but have no further information about her at this time.

I found much of my information by going to the "Family Search" website. I think it is connected to Ancestry.com.

I have found some valuable information by accessing other members public trees, especialy josiemac with much citation of birth, christening records and UK 1941 Census.
The Wilks family emigrated and landed in New York, NY August 14, 1949 when George was 48. They went to Pottsville, PA. I found a 1950 census from New Castle, Schuylkill Co., PA that lists Susann Wilkes age 43; George age 19; Charlotte age 15; Elizabeth W. age 12; Thomas age 8; Fannied age 6; James age 4, Job age 2 and John age 2.
George was not on this census and think perhaps he had gone to Mt. Savage, MD to scout it out before moving the family there (he did this before moving his family from MD to IL). It is probably here that Charlotte met James Collins and had their first child, Mary Ann.

I have also found them in the 1860 census living in Sparta, IL; the 1870 census in Wataga; and the 1880 census in Wataga.

Re Ella May Cjollins. She is listed in the 1870 census as living with George and Susan. I suppose that Charlotte died then between 1869 (when Hattie was born) and 1870. In all likelihood from complications with the birth putting her death closer to February/March 1869.

Ella lived with Harriett after George died and then between 1910 and 1920 she married Edgar E. Harvey. Think they continued to live in the Canton home of Harriett and Ella. He is listed in the 1930 Illinois census as an engineer and working as a stationer (at a RR depot?). I have her date of death as 10 Nov 1948 in Peoria at the age of 80. Probably found this at "Family Search" site.

I found James living with some of the children in the 1880 census.

I will send you the information I have regarding John's children at another time.
Diane Campbell

If you can't retrieve that information please let me know and I will send it to you. It is so rewarding to be able to fill in the blanks in my family history.

I finally got my data organized to respond. I have a brief history of John Wilks and Mary Jane Bolding and would appreciate any information that might complete it. In some cases I am making and educated guess (subject to revision).
John was born at Gloucestershire, England on June 26, 1848. He came to this country with his parents, George Wilks and Susannah Aston, along with a number of siblings in 1949 (Do you know why they emigrated?). They lived for a short time in New Castle, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania and then moved to Mt. Savage, Maryland where his sister Harriet was born on 14 November 1851. In 1853 George traveled to Knox County, Illinois to scout the area out before moving his family in 1854. Initially they lived in Sparta and later in Wataga. John married Mary Jane Bolding on 11 February 1871. The Bolding family was living near Fanny Wilks Harris (a widow) in the 1870 census in Sparta. (Do you know when and how Emanuel Harris died?) John and his twin brother, Jobe, started working in the Peoria, Illinois area in the coal mines in about 1889. John and Jobe looked very much alike and those who knew them said it was very difficult to tell one from the other. Mary Jane died in childbirth on 10 August 1881.

John Wilks died from injuries received in a coal mine accident in Peoria. The accident occurred on November 4, 1898. He was working with his brother Jobe, in a room of the Orchard mine. This shaft is located on the west bank of the Illinois River across from Peakin, and southwest of Peoria. The shaft is 31 feet deep and the men were working about 60 yards from the entrance. While the men were working the top above them caved in. They were setting a drilling machine at the time. Both were thrown down and covered with the falling debris. Jobe escaped but John was injured to such an extent that he was taken to the hospital in Peoria. There it was found that his back was broken. Some weeks later he was taken to Canton, Illinois to his sisters, Harriet and Ell's home in Canton. There he died on 16 January 1899. He was buried on 19 January 1899 at Canton. He was survived by two brothers, James of Knoxville, Il and Thomas of Monroe Iowa and four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Mallin, Fannie Harris, Harriet and Ella.

Jobe died in a later accident when on his way home from the mine on 28 December 1904. He had been living with Harriet and Ella in the 1900 census.

John and Mary Jane had three children:
1.Ada May Wilks (Thurman) born 8 April 1873; died 9 February 1908 (presumably from complications relating to childbirth).
2. Bertha Jane Wilks (Curry) born 26 June 1876 in Oneida (don't have her death date).
3. George Edward Wilks, born 28 Jauary 1879 in Galva, Il.; died 22 July 1935 in Wolbach, Greeley County, Nebraska (see separate email).

I would appreciate any additional information you might have, particularly who cared for Ada and George after their mother died. Also would love to see any pictures you might have of the Wilks families. The few I have of George I posted on my family tree.

George Edward was born on the 28th of January 1879 in Galva, Knox County, Illinois to John Wilks and Mary Bolding. His mother died 20 August 1881 in childbirth and was buried in Galva when George was 2 1/2 years of age. His siters were Ada May Wilks Thurman, born in 1873 and Bertha Jane Wilks Curry, born in 1876. Initially I have been told that George was cared for after his mother's death by John's sisters Harriet and Ella but by the time George was 8 years old he became more than they could handle and was sent to live with someone in Wyoming (I have been unable to trace who he stayed with. As a teenager he began drinking and causing this family difficulties so was sent elsewhere. The next record I have of his whereabouts is from a picture taken in Spalding, Nebraska when he was about 16 or 17. I don't know who he was living with at the time, presumably some relative. His obituary states that he came to the area of Wolbach, Nebraska as a young man. He married Myrtle Glines on 13th September 1910 (see picture in my family tree). He farmed in Greeley County. He and Myrtle had six children (Ella May 1911-1991; Bertha Jane 1912-1980; Grace Bell (my grandmother) 1917-2006; Clarence William "Mick" 1918-2004; Edith Lela 11921-2004; and Roy Edward 1930-1992 (who looked most like him). George developed a cancer on his neck in 1930. He had a farm sale on October 30, 1930 and sold all of his farming equipment and animals in order to go to Kansas for a cancer treatment. The family moved into the town of Wolbach at this time where he lived until he died on 22nd July 1935.

George never spoke much to his family about his parents or relatives in Illinois. When asked about his origins he would just say he was a "Blue Bellied Yankee." Presumably because his uncles Thomas and James had been in the Civil War. I do have two tintype pictures (see them posted on my family tree) where George looks about 19 or 20 and his sister Bertha Jane looks like she is in her early 20's. Presumably these were taken when the family got together for their father's funeral.

If you have any information that will help me fill in the blanks I would appreciate it. You told me that Bertha Jane, his sister, was raised by Elizabeth and Reuben Mallin and was treated as a sister by your grandfather. I don't know who Ada May and George were raised by. I did learn that Ada and Eldred Thurman's marriage was witnessed by Scott Bolding but the only think I have found is a Thomas S. Bolding who would have been about three years younger than John Wilks. Also I would love to see any pictures of the Wilks family you might have access to.

I found Albert's date of death through the SSDI and I am not sure where the information about Ella May came from (perhaps someone else's family tree. I have tried to be sure any data on my tree is accurate but it is not always possible to do that.
Thank you.
dccampbl

Thank you for your response with additional information on the Wilks family.
I have found some information on the Collins family. I looked for James Collins in the Maryland area since James and Charlotte's oldest daughter was born there but have had no success. I assume he was a coal miner and wondered if he, like so many others in the family had a fatal accident between 1870 and 1880 since I could not find him in the census after 1870.

I did find information on the children:
1. Mary Ann Collins (from Watkins family tree) married Charles Paddock (BD abt. 1851)in Knox County on 22 Dec 1870, Il. They had three children: Leona (1874), Daisy (1876); Anna (1879.
2. George Collins (BD29 Jan 1860 in Wataga, DD 15 Nov 1917 in Atchison, KS and is buried there). He married Hattie Eliza Jones (BD 22 Feb 2869 in Rome, Henry County, Il, DD 30 Apr 1955 Atchison, KS) on 8 Aug 1893 in Cowher City, Mitchel County KS. I found him in an 1880 census working at a hotel in KS. Their children were Dora Charlotte Collins (BD4 Mar 1895, DD 5 Jan 1965) and George Annis Collins (BD 14 Mar 1894, DD 11 Sept 1967) both buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Atchison, KS
3. Lottie Collins (BD 12 Nov 1863 in Galesburg, Il); 1870 Census living with James and George as borders in Wiles family home in Wataga); I have her date of death as 8 May 1946 but don't know where I got this bit of information.
4. Ella May Collins (BD Abt. 1867, DD 10 Apr 1948 in Peoria, Peoria County, Il). I found her in the 1870 census living in Wataga with George (64), Susan (61), Hattie (19), and Ella Wilks (2); in 1880 census in Wataga with George (73), Harriet (28)a school teacher, and Ella Wilks (12). In the 1900 census living in Canton, Fulton Co., Il with Harriet (48), Jobe (51), Ella W. Collins (32). In the 1910 census in Sparta, Knox Co., Il living with Hattie (58), Ella Wilks (42), and Ann S. Baldwn (84) boarder. Ella marries Edgar E. Harvey in 1919. In the 1920 census they livedin Canton Harvey (51) Ella (51), Harriet Wilks 68, and Hanna Strong (74)Harvey's mother-in-law. In the 1930 census still in Canton Edgar 63, Ella 62, Harriet Harvey 78.

With all the name changing tracing gets complicated.

If you have any pictures of the Wilks family you would want to share you can send them to my mother's email address: jfrjcamp@comcast.net.
dccampbl

I believe your John O'Brien who married Delia Redinton was the son of John O'Brien who married Mary Buckley. John Sr was born in Banogue, Co Limerick Ireland - married Dec 10 1864 in Auburn, NY and lived in Galesburg, IL. He and Mary Buckley had children: Dennis, John J, Ellen Bridget (became Sister Mary Phillip), Johanna (became sister Mary DeChantel) Michael and Margaret. Do you have more information on theses families?
Hi Vera and Earl had 4 children, and NO blind grandchildren I am afraid that your information on that is not correct. Vera's parents lived in Knox County ( From Sweden)and Vera (Von, Vorce,Vivian & Vera) was one of 4 I believe, but I will need to ask my mother on that. I will also ask if she knew a Donna in the family.
Your dates for her are correct..... Earl passed away in 1985
Donna L Myers was not a Child.... Harlan was he has passed away. My mother is as well.

Sorry about that. It's Samuel Martin.

As I said I know nothing about him except that his death occured before 1870. I only know his full name from a special 1925 Iowa census where the daughter (Florence Rhetta)listed her mother's and father's names.

Lovina Harris (his wife) was born April 13, 1848 in Marion County, Ohio. Presuming he is of similar age as his wife he was most likely born some time in the 1840's. That is also consistant with a daughter born in 1865.

Athalia and Joshua are both buried in Lafayette Cemetary. I have a list somewhere of all the Grant's buried there. I do not know of any pictures surviving of them. I do have a picture of Nelson Grant and Lucy though from that line.

Heber Grant came to family reunions in Lafayette when my father was small. My Aunt Maxine also remembers him. When my Grandfather, Harold P. Grant died he left my Grandmother Goldie M. Matson Grant with 4 small children. Heber made sure that they didn't go hungry or without a roof over their head, he sent money back to help my Grandmother out.

I would be glad to get pictures of headstones if you would like.
Please contact me at
artsy55@ameritech.net

Lynne Grant Faller

PS Hi Vickie, I haven't seen you for a long time on AIM!
